The practical implementation of terahertz (THz) imaging and spectroscopic systems in real operational conditions requires them to be of a compact size, to have enhanced functionality, and to be user-friendly. This work demonstrates the single-sided integration of Fresnel-zone-plate-based optical elements with InGaAs bow-tie diodes directly on a semiconductor chip. Numerical simulations were conducted to optimize the Fresnel zone plate's focal length and the InP substrate's thickness to achieve constructive interference at 600 GHz, room-temperature operation and achieve a sensitivity more than an order of magnitude higher-up to 24.

Terahertz frequency range imaging has become more and more attractive for a wide range of practical applications; however, further component optimization is still required. The presented research introduces 3D-printed high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) beam-shaping components for the terahertz range. Gaussian, Bessel, and Airy beam-shaping structures are fabricated, and different combinations are employed to evaluate imaging system performance.

The key step in the entire molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) preparation process is the formation of the complementary cavities in the polymer matrix through the template removal process. The template is removed using chemical treatments, leaving behind selective binding sites for target molecules within the polymer matrix. Other MIP preparation steps include mixing monomers and template molecules in the appropriate solvent(s), monomer-template complex equilibration, and polymerisation of the monomers around the template.

The development of multitargeted drugs represents an innovative approach to cancer treatment, aiming to enhance drug effectiveness while minimizing side effects. Herein, we sought to elucidate the inhibitory effect of selagibenzophenone B derivatives on the survival of cancer cells and dual topoisomerase I/II enzyme activity. Results demonstrated that among the compounds, selectively inhibited the proliferation and migration of prostate cancer cells while exhibiting minimal effects on healthy cells.

Noble metal nanoparticles, specifically gold and silver, are extensively utilized in sensors, catalysts, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and optical-electronic components due to their unique localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. The production of these nanoparticles involves various methods, but among the environmentally friendly approaches, laser ablation stands out as it eliminates the need for toxic chemicals during purification. However, nanoparticle aggregation poses a challenge in laser ablation, necessitating the addition of extra materials that contaminate the otherwise clean process.

MXenes have received worldwide attention across various scientific and technological fields since the first report of the synthesis of TiC nanostructures in 2011. The unique characteristics of MXenes, such as superior mechanical strength and flexibility, liquid-phase processability, tunable surface functionality, high electrical conductivity, and the ability to customize their properties, have led to the widespread development and exploration of their applications in energy storage, electronics, biomedicine, catalysis, and environmental technologies. The significant growth in publications related to MXenes over the past decade highlights the extensive research interest in this material.

Amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a block of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) with unique properties to prevent nonspecific protein adsorption and enhance lubrication in aqueous media and a block of dopamine methacrylamide (DOPMA) distinguished by excellent adhesion performance were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization for the first time. The DOPMA monomer with an acetonide-protected catechol group (acetonide-protected dopamine methacrylamide (ADOPMA)) was used, allowing the prevention of undesirable side reactions during polymerization and oxidation during storage. The adsorption behavior of the diblock copolymers with protected and unprotected catechol groups on gold surfaces was probed using attenuated total reflection (ATR)-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS), and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS).

In this work, a bi-stable behavior of laser ablation efficiency and quality was controlled by fluence and burst length. The plasma shielding of incoming laser radiation caused sudden jumps with a significant decrease in ablation efficiency for every even number of pulses in the burst. The attenuation of incoming laser radiation by plasma created by the previous pulse was incorporated into the toy model of burst ablation efficiency.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), a type of biomimetic material, have attracted considerable interest owing to their cost-effectiveness, good physiochemical stability, favourable specificity and selectivity for target analytes, and widely used for various biological applications. It was demonstrated that MIPs with significant selectivity towards protein-based targets could be applied in medicine, diagnostics, proteomics, environmental analysis, sensors, various in vivo and/or in vitro applications, drug delivery systems, etc. This review provides an overview of MIPs dedicated to biomedical applications and insights into perspectives on the application of MIPs in newly emerging areas of biotechnology.

The present study introduces a novel method for the synthesis of magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles (MPNPs) with enhanced functionality for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. By employing pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) to synthesize plasmonic nanoparticles and wet chemistry to synthesize magnetic nanoparticles, we successfully fabricated chemically pure hybrid FeO@Au and FeO@Ag nanoparticles. We demonstrated a straightforward approach of an electrostatic attachment of the plasmonic and magnetic parts using positively charged polyethylenimine.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the most significant barrier between anthropogenic microplastics and environmental ecosystems. The distribution and characteristics of microplastics in WWTPs remain uncertain and incompletely understood, particularly in northeastern Europe (Baltic States), where there is a lack of data on microplastic pollution and distribution. This study presents the removal efficiency and variation in characteristics of microplastics in different stages of the secondary WWTP during a 3-month sampling campaign in Lithuania.

Currently, there is a growing interest in the use of natural materials in various fields of science, technology and environmental protection due to their availability, low-cost, non-toxicity and biodegradability. Chitosan, natural clay of local origin, montmorillonite, zeolite, cross-linking agents (epichlorohydrin, sodium tripolyphosphate, glutaraldehyde) and plasticisers (glycerol) were used to synthesise composites. The composites were characterised by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), tested for their antibacterial activity and used in batch experiments to study the adsorption of caesium, cobalt and europium ions.

A Pt-coated Ni layer supported on a Ni foam catalyst (denoted PtNi/Ni) was investigated for the electro-oxidation of the formic acid (FAO) in acidic media. The prepared PtNi/Ni catalyst was studied as a function of the formic acid (FA) concentration at bare Pt and PtNi/Ni catalysts. The catalytic activity of the PtNi/Ni catalysts, studied on the basis of the ratio of the direct and indirect current peaks ()/() for the FAO reaction, showed values approximately 10 times higher compared to those on bare Pt, particularly at low FA concentrations, reflecting the superiority of the former catalysts for the electro-oxidation of FA to CO.

Urban areas, as major sources of aerosol black carbon emissions, contribute to increased pollution levels in surrounding regions by air mass long-range transport, which should be taken into account in implementation of emission-reduction strategies. Properties of light-absorbing aerosol particles and a novel approach to assess the impact of long-range transport on black carbon (BC) pollution in two under-investigated urban environments: Warsaw (Poland, Central Europe) and Vilnius (Lithuania, North-Eastern Europe) are presented. During the warm season of May-August 2022, BC mass concentration and aerosol optical properties: the scattering Ångström exponent (SAE), absorption Ångström exponent (AAE), and single scattering albedo (SSA) were investigated.

We report on importance of conducting comprehensive studies of atmospheric aerosol particles, which cannot be done if information from various complementary sensors is unavailable. We present an example for such application and recommend on the types of sensors that should be used in view of the ACTRIS and RI-URBANS new strategies for monitoring at supersites. Although active and passive remote sensing data was not available in continuous mode, we show that synergic use of them with in-situ observations allows for comprehensive study of temporal and height-resolved distribution of aerosol in the lower troposphere and it can be successfully combined to assess biomass burning impact on air quality and optical properties.

This study focuses on fabricating cobalt particles deposited on graphitic carbon nitride (Co/gCN) using annealing, microwave-assisted and hydrothermal syntheses, and their employment in hydrogen and oxygen evolution (HER and OER) reactions. Composition, surface morphology, and structure were examined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The performance of Co-modified gCN composites for the HER and OER were investigated in an alkaline media (1 M KOH).
