The tremendous loss of microplastics from the sea surface and the low density of microplastics found in the water column and sediments indicate that the oceans have mechanisms capable of transporting microplastics from the surface to the seafloor. These include physicochemical processes and biological influences from marine organisms that drive the vertical migration of microplastics. Little is known, however, about the biological processes involved in the deposition of plastics in the marine environment.

Three new compounds, including one steroid named penivariod A (1) and two polyketides penivarides A and B (2 and 3), as well as six known derivatives (4-9) were isolated from Penicillium variabile EN-394, a fungus afforded from the marine red alga Rhodomela confervoides. Their structures were elucidated by analysis of the HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR. The absolute stereochemistry was determined by X-ray crystallographic data, gauge-independent atomic orbital (GIAO) NMR shift calculation followed by DP4+ analysis combined with calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD).

The Bohai Sea (BS) and the northern Yellow Sea (NYS) are threatened by anthropogenic activities and climate change. To accurately assess the benthic ecological quality status in this region, macrobenthos were selected as the research subject in this investigation. The results showed that the macrobenthos community structure had spatio-temporal differences in the BS and the NYS through principal coordinate analysis, especially in Laizhou Bay, and the Yellow River Delta was significantly different from that in the NYS.

Metals are crucial to the stability of marine ecosystems, and it is important to analyze their spatial heterogeneity. Two new nonadride derivatives, namely, talarodrides G and H (1 and 2), and one new depsidone derivative, botryorhodine K (3), together with a known nonadride analogue (4), were characterized from the Magellan Seamount-derived fungus Talaromyces scorteus AS-242. Their structures were established by detailed interpretation of NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometry data analysis. X-ray crystallographic analysis of compounds 1 and 3 confirmed their structures and absolute configurations, representing the first characterized crystal structure of a nonadride-type polyketide.

The high-temperature potentiometry operated by nonisothermal heating is a promising way to break through the traditional potentiometric responses of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) at room temperature. Herein, a locally heated strategy through near-infrared region (NIR) laser irradiation upon the photothermal mesoporous carbon material placed between the ion-selective membrane and the glassy carbon substrate is introduced to obtain the high-temperature potentiometric performance of a solid-contact Ca-ISE for detection of Ca in seawater. Based on the light-to-heat conversion of the mesoporous carbon-based solid contact, the temperature of the solid-contact Ca-ISE upon continuous NIR laser irradiation can be increased from room temperature to 60-70 °C, and the slope of the electrode is promoted up to about 30% according to the thermodynamic steady-state potentiometric response.

Chitin deacetylase (CDA), a prominent member of the carbohydrate esterase enzyme family 4 (CE4), is found ubiquitously in bacteria, fungi, insects, and crustaceans. Introduction: Whole-genome duplication (WGD) is one of the most sudden and dramatic events rarely reported in invertebrates, but its occurrence can lead to physiological, morphological, and behavioral diversification. WGD has also never been reported in barnacles, which is one of the most unique groups of crustaceans with extremely speciallized morphology (calcareous shells) and habits (intertidal sessile lifestyle).
Objectives: To investigate whether WGD has occurred in barnacles and examine its potential role in driving the adaptive evolution and diversification of barnacles.

Modern potentiometric sensors based on polymeric membrane ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) have achieved new breakthroughs in sensitivity, selectivity, and stability and have extended applications in environmental surveillance, medical diagnostics, and industrial analysis. Moreover, nonclassical potentiometry shows promise for many applications and opens up new opportunities for potentiometric biosensing. To examine the diversity and community structure of epifauna along latitudinal and depth gradients in China seas and its temporal variations over nearly 60 years, a total of 61,424 records of epifauna were compiled. Latitudinal gradients of γ-diversity from 28 to 37°N showed two peaks of increase in 1958-1960; however, only one peak was observed near 28°N in 2000-2015. Along depth gradient, the peak of species richness shifted about 10 m deeper from about 50 m in 1958-1960 to about 60 m in 2000-2015.
