In this paper, we present an overview of current electrophysiological techniques applicable to algae while reviewing the historical usage of such techniques in this field.

This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition, structural properties, and biological properties of pectin polysaccharides (AP-FS, AP-QG, and AP-HG) isolated from different varieties of apple pomace. Based on the methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, the structure of AP-FS was determined to be composed of an α-1,4-linked homogalacturonan backbone that exhibited high levels of O-6 methylation. All pectins exhibit potent inhibitory activity against human colon cancer and human liver cancer cells, along with immunostimulatory effects.

Marine natural products play an important role in biopesticides. Seven new secondary metabolites with different structural classes, including two cycloheptapeptides, scortide A (1) and scortide B (2), two 19-nor-diterpenoids, talascortene H (3) and talascortene I (4), two diterpenoid acids, talascortene J (5) and talascortene K (6), and one triterpenoid, talascortene L (7) were isolated and identified from the sea-anemone-derived endozoic fungus Talaromyces scorteus AS-242. Their structures were comprehensively assigned by spectroscopic data analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, tandem mass spectrometry, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations.

In May 2018, a living solemyid bivalve was collected using a remotely operated vehicle at a depth of 1,390 m from the Haima cold seep in the northwestern slope of the South China Sea. Herein, we propose a novel electrochemical sensing strategy for label-free dual-biomarker detection, which is based on the combination of stimulus-responsive molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-modified nanopores and a polymeric membrane chronopotentiometric sensor. The ion fluxes galvanostatically imposed on the sensing membrane surface can be blocked by the recognition reaction between the target biomarker in the sample solution and the stimulus-responsive MIP receptor in the nanopores, thus causing a potential change.

A novel cationic lipoic acid grafted low molecular weight chitosan (LCNE-LA) conjugate was constructed and further self-assembled into GSH-responsive cationic nanocarrier to achieve better antitumor effect by combining encapsulated chemotherapy and oxidative damage induced by ROS. The resultant LCNE-LA cationic micelle exhibited favorable physicochemical properties (low CMC, small size, positively zeta potential and good stability), excellent biosafety and desired redox sensitivity. The fluctuating water-line corrosion of EH40 steel in sterile and biotic media was investigated with a wire beam electrode. When the coupons were partially immersed in the sterile medium, the position of the low water-line acted as the cathodic zone and the area below the low water-line constantly served as the main anodic zone. The thin electrolyte layers with uneven thickness promoted the galvanic current of the region below the low water-line.

Background: Two specimens of the genus were examined from the caridean collections of the Marine Biological Museum, Chinese Academy of Sciences. These specimens were captured in the South China Sea in 1987. Detailed inspection revealed that their morphological features closely match the (re)descriptions of , especially in the presence of a long, distinct lateral carina on the rostrum, a dorsally unarmed rostral border, and four prominent terminal spines on the dactylus of the last three pereiopods.

Two pairs of new enantiomeric hydroxyphenylacetic acid derivatives, (±)-corylophenols A and B ((±)-1 and (±)-2), a new α-pyrone analogue, corylopyrone A (3), and six andrastin-type meroterpenoids (4-9) were isolated and identified from the deep-sea cold-seep sediment-derived fungus Penicillium corylophilum CS-682. Their structures and stereo configurations were determined by detailed spectroscopic analysis of NMR and MS data, chiral HPLC analysis, J-based configuration analysis, and quantum chemical calculations of ECD, specific rotation, and NMR (with DP4+ probability analysis). Compound 3 showed inhibitory activity against some strains of pathogenic bacteria.
