Herein, a chemiluminescence (CL) biosensor based on CRISPR-Cas12a and cation exchange reaction was constructed to detect the biomarker microRNA-21 (miRNA-21). The rolling circle amplification (RCA) reaction was introduced to convert each target RNA strand into a long single-stranded DNA with repeated sequences, which acted as triggers to initiate the transcleavage activity of CRISPR-Cas12a. The activated Cas12a could cleave the biotinylated linker DNA of CuS nanoparticles (NPs) to inhibit the binding of CuS NPs to streptavidin immobilized on the surface of the microplate, which strongly reduced the generation of Cu from a cation exchange between CuS NPs and AgNO, and thus efficiently suppressed the CL of Cu-luminol-HO system, giving a "signal off" biosensor.

The excess input of nitrate is one of the primary factors triggering nearshore eutrophication. To estimate the source apportionment of nitrate on the East China Sea (ECS) shelf, the nitrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in nitrate (δN-NO and δO-NO) collected in winter and late spring 2016 were analyzed alongside essential physical, chemical and biological parameters. In numerous studies, researchers have explored the interactions between fungi and their hosting biota in terrestrial systems, while much less attention has been paid to the counterpart interactions in aquatic, and particularly marine, ecosystems. Despite the growing recognition of the potential functions of fungi in structuring phytoplankton communities, the current insights were mostly derived from phytoplankton hosts, such as diatoms, green microalgae, and cyanobacteria. Dinoflagellates are the second most abundant group of phytoplankton in coastal marine ecosystems, and they are notorious for causing harmful algal blooms (HABs).

The enigmatic scaphopods, or tusk shells, are a small and rare group of molluscs whose phylogenomic position among the Conchifera is undetermined, and the taxonomy within this class also needs revision. Metamorphosis, as a critical developmental event, controls the population dynamics of most marine invertebrates, especially some carnivorous gastropods that feed on bivalves, whose population dynamics not only affect the maintenance of the ecological balance but also impact the protection of bivalve resources; therefore, the metamorphosis of carnivorous gastropods deserve attention. Here, we investigated the mechanism underlying the response of the carnivorous gastropod to its metamorphic inducer juvenile oysters through integrated analysis of miRNA and mRNA profiles. According to the results, we speculated that the AMPK signaling pathway may be the critical regulator in the response to juvenile oysters in competent larvae.

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a frequently detected antibiotic in the environment and has attracted much attention. Aeromonas caviae strain GLB-10 was isolated, which could degrade SMX to Aniline and 3-Amino-5-methylisoxazole. Compared to the single bacteria, the mixed bacteria including stain GLB-10, Vibrio diabolicus strain L2-2, Zobellella taiwanensis, Microbacterium testaceum, Methylobacterium, etc, had an ultrahigh degradation efficiency to SMX, with 250 mg/L SMX being degraded in 3 days.

Environmental factors play an important role in the lipid, protein, and carbohydrate compositions of microalgae, wherein temperature and light are key influencing factors. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry was used in this study to detect biomacromolecules in cells under different temperatures (10, 15, 20, and 25 °C) and different illumination conditions (1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 lx) to study the corresponding changes in lipid, protein, and carbohydrate contents. Results indicate that the biomacromolecule content at different temperatures has different patterns.

The prevalence of microplastic pollution in the ocean has caused widespread concern. Many studies have focused on the occurrence of microplastics in the marine environment and organisms, but the fate of microplastics in the ocean is still unclear, and the factors affecting the distribution of microplastics have not yet been consistently concluded. Resting cysts of dinoflagellates seed harmful algal blooms (HABs) and their geographic expansion, which makes it fundamentally important to obtain comprehensive inventories of dinoflagellate resting cysts in HABs-prone regions. The Yellow Sea (YS) of China has observed numerous outbreaks of dinoflagellate HABs with some novel species recorded recently indicating an underestimated HABs-causing species diversity. We report our investigation of dinoflagellate cysts of YS via an approach combining metabarcoding sequencing and single-cyst morpho-molecular identification, which identified many novel cyst species and a significant controlling effect of the Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass on cyst composition.

The Bohai Sea, a semi-enclosed inland sea in China and an important mariculture region, has experienced extensive harmful algal blooms (HABs) and their negative impacts for several decades. To investigate the changes of HABs and their potential drivers over time and space, a dataset of 230 HAB events (1952-2017), along with corresponding environmental data (1990-2017) was compiled. The frequency of HAB events in the Bohai Sea has increased over time but plateaued in the last decade, and our analysis showed that history of HABs in the Bohai Sea could be categorized into three periods based on their frequency, scale, and HAB-forming species.

Large-scale kelp aquaculture offers several opportunities to counteract eutrophication. Here, six sites from Ailian Bay to its offshore waters in Rongcheng, northern China, were selected to investigate the spatiotemporal variations of kelp (Saccharina japonica) and seawater concentrations of C, N, and P in 2017 and 2019 in order to assess nutrient removal by kelp farming. Variations in biological parameters and elemental nutrient concentrations of whole thalli were also quantified in 2015 and 2016.

The continuous expansion of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) is a microcosm of marine hypoxia problem. Based on a survey in M4 seamount area of Tropical Western Pacific Ocean, the effects of thermodynamic parameters on OMZ were discussed. Jellyfish Cyanea nozakii venom is a complex mixture of various toxins, most of which are proteinous biological macromolecules and are considered to be responsible for clinical symptoms or even death after a severe sting. Previous transcriptome and proteome analysis identified hundreds of toxins in the venom, including hemolysins, C-type lectin, phospholipase A, potassium channel inhibitor, metalloprotease, etc. However, it is not clear which toxin in the venom plays the most important role in lethality.

Prosaposin is a precursor that can be processed into four different saposins, designated as A, B, C, and D, which have multiple functions in mammals, including neuroprotection and immune modulation. The immune function of saposin in teleost remains largely unknown.
