Introduction: Intraamniotic infection (IAI) is one of the main possible complications of preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) and can lead to severe consequences for the neonate, such as early onset neonatal sepsis (EONS). Available diagnostic tools for IAI have poor diagnostic performance, which may result in both over- and underdiagnoses of IAI. In a search for better diagnostic tools, we have examined short-term variation (STV) in fetal heart rate.

Contextualising the job demands-resources model: a cross-sectional study of the psychosocial work environment across different healthcare professions.

Hum Resour Health

November 2024

The Department of Occupational Medicine, Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Nobels Väg 13, 171 65, Solna, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background: The deteriorating psychosocial work environment among healthcare workers in Sweden, influenced by demanding working conditions and resource constraints, affects individual well-being and patient care quality. Healthcare workers, including physicians, registered nurses, and nursing assistants, often work interdependently and share workplaces, yet are three completely different professions. Nonetheless, comprehensive studies comparing their psychosocial work environments are scarce; often focusing on healthcare workers either separately or as a homogenous group, but rarely comparative.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how levels of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the blood affect the risk of developing allergic diseases, like rhinitis, from childhood through young adulthood.
  • The research involved 933 participants from the BAMSE cohort, analyzing PUFA levels at ages 8 and 16, and assessing their association with allergic reactions by age 24.
  • Findings indicated that higher levels of certain PUFA, particularly omega-3 and arachidonic acid, at age 8 were linked to lower risks of rhinitis and allergic sensitization; however, these relationships might be influenced by pre-existing conditions in childhood rather than new cases that develop later.

Aims/hypothesis: Some studies find an increased risk of type 1 diabetes in children exposed to antibiotics. We investigated if exposure to antibiotics increases the risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) and type 2 diabetes.

Methods: We used data from a Swedish case-control study (Epidemiological Study of Risk Factors for LADA and Type 2 Diabetes [ESTRID]: LADA, n=597; type 2 diabetes, n=2065; control participants matched on participation time, n=2386) and a case-control study nested within the Norwegian Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) (n=82/1279/2050).

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the relationship between transportation noise and atrial fibrillation (AF) using data from 11 Nordic cohorts, totaling over 161,000 participants.
  • Researchers found that higher road traffic noise exposure is linked to an increased risk of developing AF, particularly in women and overweight individuals.
  • Aircraft noise also showed a potential association with AF risk, while railway noise did not appear to be related; overall, road and aircraft noise combined raised the risk significantly.

An individual's likelihood of developing non-communicable diseases is often influenced by the types, intensities and duration of exposures at work. Job exposure matrices provide exposure estimates associated with different occupations. However, due to their time-consuming expert curation process, job exposure matrices currently cover only a subset of possible workplace exposures and may not be regularly updated.

Precarious work on the rise.

BMC Public Health

July 2024

Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Precarious employment (PE) is non-standard employment with uncertain and unstable contract duration, low wages, and limited labour protections and rights. Research has associated PE with workers' poor mental health and well-being; however, this association has been studied primarily using quantitative methods. This qualitative study seeks to examine the mechanisms between PE and mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario, Canada.

Background: Webtoon, a digital form of comics created in the Republic of Korea, has spread widely with advantages that anyone can become a cartoonist and that autonomy of creation is guaranteed. The purpose of this study is to identify the working conditions of webtoon writers and analyze the relationship between these conditions and depressive symptoms.

Methods: A survey was carried out on webtoon writers and a survey data of 312 webtoon writers were analyzed.

Background: Available evidence suggests a link between exposure to transportation noise and an increased risk of obesity. We aimed to assess exposure-response functions for long-term residential exposure to road traffic, railway and aircraft noise, and markers of obesity.

Methods: Our cross-sectional study is based on pooled data from 11 Nordic cohorts, including up to 162,639 individuals with either measured (69.

Study Objectives: Shift work, insufficient sleep, and poor sleep quality at young age have been associated with increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). This study aimed to investigate the potential interaction between aspects of inadequate sleep (short sleep, phase shift, and poor sleep quality) during adolescence and HLA-DRB1*15:01 in relation to MS risk.

Methods: We used a Swedish population-based case-control study (1253 cases and 1766 controls).

Precarious Employment (PE) is characterized by job, income, and benefit insecurities. Studies surrounding PE and well-being have been predominantly quantitative, leaving a gap in rich descriptions of employment experiences. We recruited a sample of 40 adults aged 25-55 who were involved in PE during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic or lost employment due to the pandemic.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate temporal trends in survival and subsequent cardiovascular events in a nationwide myocardial infarction population with and without diabetes.

Methods And Results: Between 2006 and 2020, we identified 2527 individuals with type 1 diabetes, 48 321 individuals with type 2 diabetes and 243 170 individuals without diabetes with first myocardial infarction in national health care registries. Outcomes were trends in all-cause death after 30 and 365 days, cardiovascular death and major adverse cardiovascular events (ie, nonfatal stroke, nonfatal myocardial infarction, cardiovascular death, and heart failure hospitalization).

Purpose: To study the risk for eye diseases in individuals with Ulcerative Colitis (UC), and to assess whether silica dust-exposure could contribute to the development of inflammatory eye diseases.

Methods: A case-control study was conducted using a patient register processed by the National Board of Health and Welfare (NBHW) and Statistics Sweden. Cases were diagnosed with UC between 2007 and 2016.

March 2024

Aging Research Center, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, 171 65, Stockholm, Sweden; Stockholm Gerontology Research Center, 113 46, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background And Aims: Transportation noise is an environmental exposure with mounting evidence of adverse health effects. Besides the increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, recent studies suggest that long-term noise exposure might accelerate cognitive decline in older age. We examined the association between transportation noise and cognitive function in a cohort of older adults.

Background: Moderate-to-late preterm birth (32 to <37 weeks of gestation) has been associated with impaired lung function in adolescence, but data in adulthood and physiological phenotyping beyond spirometry are scarce. We aimed to investigate lung function development from adolescence into young adulthood and to provide physiological phenotyping in individuals born moderate-to-late preterm.

Methods: Lung function data from individuals born moderate-to-late preterm (n=110) and term (37 to <42 weeks of gestation, n=1895) in the Swedish birth cohort BAMSE were used for analysis and included dynamic spirometry, fractional exhaled nitric oxide and multiple breath nitrogen wash-out.

Background: Liver disorders are important adverse effects associated with antifungal drug treatment. However, the accuracy of Clinical International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes in identifying liver disorders for register based research is not well-established. This study aimed to determine the positive predictive value (PPV) of the ICD-10 codes for identifying patients with toxic liver disease, hepatic failure, and jaundice among patients with systemic antifungal treatment.
