Objective: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with elevated risk for poor physical and psychological health outcomes. Nearly all of the literature on the association between ACEs and poor health focuses on the individual and family level; the potential role of neighborhood environment is overlooked. Understanding the relationship between ACEs and characteristics of the neighborhood environment is a necessary first step in determining if and how place-based, trauma-informed interventions might mitigate the negative effects of ACEs.

Transient receptor potential cation channel 6 (TRPC6), a member of the TRPC family, is expressed in the hypothalamus and modulates cell Ca influx. However, the role of TRPC6 in controlling metabolic and cardiovascular functions under normal conditions has not been previously determined. Thus the impacts of TRPC6 deletion on energy balance, metabolic, and cardiovascular regulation as well as the anorexic responses to leptin and melanocortin 3/4 receptor (MC3/4R) activation were investigated in this study.

Effect of changes in children's bedtime and sleep period on targeted eating behaviors and timing of caloric intake.

Eat Behav

April 2022

Psychiatry & Human Behavior, Alpert Medical School of Brown University, United States of America; Weight Control & Diabetes Research Center, The Miriam Hospital, United States of America.

Short sleep is associated with obesity risk. Experimental studies with adults and observational studies with children demonstrate that changes in eating, including increased caloric intake from energy-dense foods and sugar-sweetened beverages as well as increased caloric intake in the evening, may partially account for this increased risk. We therefore examined whether experimental changes in children's sleep period lead to changes in reported caloric intake from energy-dense snack foods and sugar-sweetened beverages, and in the evening.

Associations Between Independent Assessments of Child Appetite Self-Regulation: A Narrative Review.

Front Nutr

January 2022

Department of Pediatrics, United States Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Service (USDA/ARS) Children's Nutrition Research Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, United States.

A variety of eating behaviors among children have been associated with obesity risk and are thought to broadly reflect child appetite self-regulation (ASR). While ASR is thought to occur on cognitive, emotional, motivational, biological, and behavioral levels, the inter-relatedness of ASR constructs as assessed by different methods/measures is not well-characterized. This narrative review describes the correspondence between different methods/measures of child ASR constructs as assessed by self-report questionnaires and/or observational tasks and their relationship to child standardized body mass index (BMIz).

Over the last decade, longitudinal research has shown that children's general, top-down self-regulation during early childhood is negatively associated with children's weight status in elementary school. The samples in these previous studies have been primarily White, and no study to date has examined this issue in a sample of Hispanic children from low-income families-a population at high risk for childhood obesity. The present study followed 130 Hispanic children over a time period of three to just under five years, examining the degree to which multiple measures of general, top-down self-regulation, along with a measure of appetite regulation (eating in the absence of hunger), predicted children's BMI z-scores in the early elementary school years.
