The development of stable biopharmaceutical formulations, such as monoclonal antibodies, poses a great challenge in the pharmaceutical industry. This study investigated the stabilizing effect of 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) in liquid and solid formulations of infliximab during processing and storage. The solid formulation was produced by a scaled-up high-speed electrospinning method, resulting in a product suitable for reconstitution with excellent dissolution properties.

The primary method of treatment for patients suffering from drug-resistant focal-onset epilepsy is resective surgery, which adversely impacts neurocognitive function. Radio frequency (RF) ablation and laser ablation are the methods with the most promise, achieving seizure-free rates similar to resection but with less negative impact on neurocognitive function. However, there remains a number of concerns and open technical questions about these two methods of thermal ablation, with the primary ones: (1) heating; (2) hemorrhage and bleeding; and (3) poor directionality.

The aim of this work is to incorporate lanthanide-cored upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) into the surface of microengineered biomedical implants to create a spatially controlled and optically releasable model drug delivery device in an integrated fashion. Our approach enables silicone-based microelectrocorticography (ECoG) implants holding platinum/iridium recording sites to serve as a stable host of UCNPs. Nanoparticles excitable in the near-infrared (lower energy) regime and emitting visible (higher energy) light are utilized in a study.

Novel tetrahydroisoquinoline and piperidine derivatives were selectively synthesized from substituted indenes or cyclopentenes. The process starts with an oxidative cleavage of the ring olefin bond, which gives reactive diformyl intermediates. By a ring-closing step using chiral (R) or (S) α-methylbenzylamine under a reductive amination protocol facilitated ring formation with ring expansion of the corresponding nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

This study aims to elucidate a novel mechanism for elevating the pH within the calicoblastic extracellular calcifying medium (pH) of corals and demonstrate the potential contribution of calcifying organisms to CO sequestration. Departing from traditional models that attribute the increase in pH primarily to H expulsion via Ca-ATPase, we emphasize the significant role of polyamines. These ubiquitous biogenic amines conveyed by calicoblastic cells through polyamine transporters demonstrate a remarkable affinity for CO.

A systematic simulation study was performed to investigate the interlayer interactions in a 1:1 layered phyllosilicate clay, kaolinite. Atomistic simulations with classical realistic force fields (INTERFACE and ClayFF) were used to examine the influence of the individual non-bonded interactions on the interlayer binding in the kaolinite model system. By switching off selected pairwise interactions in the applied force fields (leaving the intralayer interactions intact), it was confirmed that the tetrahedral-octahedral-type pairwise interactions held the kaolinite plates together and that interlayer hydrogen bonding, modeled by Coulombic forces, played a dominant role in this.

Increasing the mechanical strength of stainless steel is fundamental to expanding its applications and extending its useful life, especially due to its impressive corrosion resistance. However, many processes that make possible increasing the hardness and wear resistance of these steels also compromise their performance when they are subjected to corrosive environments. Carborazine (BCNH) and borazine (BNH) are isoelectronic analogues of benzene (CH). The aromatic character of borazine have basically reached a consensus after a long period of controversy, but the related properties of carborazine are even rarely reported. In this work, we systematically investigated the geometric structure, charge distribution, frontier molecular orbital characteristics, bonding, electronic delocalization, magnetic shielding effect, and induced ring current of carborazine and borazine, and compared the studied characteristics with those of benzene to determine the aromatic character of the two analogues.

This work conducts a comprehensive theoretical study on the non-covalent complexation between cyclocarbons and C fullerene for the first time. The binding energy between cyclocarbons and C fullerene is significantly stronger than that between two C or two C fullerenes, indicating a particularly strong affinity. The cyclocarbons and C fullerene can spontaneously assemble into complexes in the gas phase at room temperature, and the hydrophobic effect caused by the solvent environment can promote this binding.
