Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland 4072, Australia.

Binary metastable semiconductor materials offer exciting possibilities in the field of optoelectronics, such as photovoltaics, tunable photosensors, and detectors. However, understanding their properties and translating them into practical applications can sometimes be challenging, owing to their thermodynamic instability. Herein, we report a temperature-controlled crystallization technique involving electrochemical deposition to produce metastable CuTe thin films that can reliably function under ambient conditions.

Immunotherapies, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, have limitations in their effective treatment of malignancies. The immunosuppressive environment associated with the tumor microenvironment may prevent the achievement of optimal outcomes for immune checkpoint inhibitors alone, and nanotechnology-based platforms for delivery of immunotherapeutic agents are increasingly being investigated for their potential to improve the efficacy of immune checkpoint blockade therapy. In this manuscript, nanoparticles were designed with appropriate size and surface characteristics to enhance their retention of payload so that they can transmit their loaded drugs to the tumor.

The osteopontin (OPN) released from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) undergoing lineage differentiation can negatively influence the expansion of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in coculture systems developed for expanding HSCs. Therefore, minimizing the amount of OPN in the coculture system is important for the successful ex vivo expansion of HSCs. Toward this goal, a bioengineered three dimensional (3D) microfibrous-matrix that can maintain MSCs in less OPN-releasing conditions has been developed, and its influence on the expansion of HSCs has been studied.

Identifying best bioactive phytochemicals from different medicinal plants using molecular docking techniques demonstrates a potential pre-clinical compound discovery against SARS-CoV-2 viral infection. The screening of bioactive phytochemicals with the two druggable targets of SARS-CoV-2 by simple precision/extra precision molecular docking methods was used to compute binding affinity at its active sites. phyllaemblicin and cinnamtannin class of phytocompounds showed a better binding affinity range (-9.

The main objective of this study was to determine the cellular and molecular effects of doxycycline on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and protection against secondary injuries following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Microvascular hyperpermeability and cerebral edema resulting from BBB dysfunction after TBI leads to elevation of intracranial pressure, secondary brain ischemia, herniation, and brain death. There are currently no effective therapies to modulate the underlying pathophysiology responsible for TBI-induced BBB dysfunction and hyperpermeability.

The rational design of novel cathode materials remains a key pursuit in the development of (post) Li-ion batteries. Considering the relative ionic and Stokes radii and open frameworks with large tunnels, Na-based compounds can act as versatile cathodes for monovalent Li-ion and post-Li-ion batteries. Here, tunnel-type sodium insertion material NaMnO is demonstrated as an intercalation host for Li-ion and K-ion batteries.

Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN), The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland, 4072, Australia.

The synthesis of highly crystalline mesoporous materials is key to realizing high-performance chemical and biological sensors and optoelectronics. However, minimizing surface oxidation and enhancing the domain size without affecting the porous nanoarchitecture are daunting challenges. Herein, we report a hybrid technique that combines bottom-up electrochemical growth with top-down plasma treatment to produce mesoporous semiconductors with large crystalline domain sizes and excellent surface passivation.

Early detection of liver tumors and cirrhotic lesions by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains a great challenge. Here, we report a biomineral nanocontrast agent based on iron-doped nanocalcium phosphate (nCP:Fe-CA) for magnetic resonance imaging of early-stage liver cirrhotic and hepatocellular carcinoma nodules using rat models. We have optimized an intravenously injectable, aqueous suspension of nCP:Fe-CA having an average size of 137.

Article Synopsis
  • Multi-target directed ligand-based 2D-QSAR models were created using N-benzyl piperidine derivatives to analyze their inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and BACE1, with the dataset including 57 AChE and 53 BACE1 inhibitors.
  • Five classes of molecular descriptors were utilized for machine learning approaches like linear methods, genetic function approximation (GFA), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural networks (ANN), leading to statistically significant models for both enzymes.
  • The models highlighted key molecular descriptors for AChE and BACE1, and nonlinear methods like ANN and SVM outperformed linear approaches, indicating their potential for designing effective anti-Alzheimer's compounds.

Purpose: Identification of nonresponders prior to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy would help in the judicious clinical management of diabetic macular edema (DME) patients. Thus, a systematic study was initiated to identify nonresponding DME patient population undergoing ranibizumab treatment to figure out additional inflammatory components that may contribute to their nonresponsiveness to anti-VEGF therapy.

Methods: A total of 40 patients recruited to this investigator-initiated trial received intravitreal ranibizumab monthly for 3 months.

Phenotypic methods for detection of methicillin resistance in (MRSA) can be inaccurate due to heterogeneous expression of resistance and due to environmental factors that influence the expression of resistance. This study aims to compare various phenotypic methods of detection of methicillin resistance with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for gene and to detect the presence of oxacillin-susceptible MRSA (OS-MRSA). A total of 150 isolates were tested using cefoxitin disk diffusion, oxacillin salt agar (OSA), latex agglutination test for penicillin binding protein 2a antigen, chromogenic MRSA ID agar, and PCR.

Accessing the peripheral nervous system (PNS) by topically applied nanoparticles is a simple and novel approach with clinical applications in several PNS disorders. Skin is richly innervated by long peripheral axons that arise from cell bodies located distally within ganglia. In this study we attempt to target dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons, via their axons by topical application of lectin-functionalized gold nanoparticles (IB4-AuNP).

Background: Bacterial surface proteins act as potential adhesins or invasins. The GroEL is a signal peptide-free surface expressed protein that aids adhesion in Escherichia coli by binding to LOX-1 receptor of the host cells. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) expresses GroEL2 protein, having high level sequence identity with E.

Center for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine, Amrita School of Medical Sciences and Research Center (AIMS), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi, 682041, Kerala, India. Electronic address:

Bacterial cell surface adhesins play a major role in facilitating host colonization and subsequent establishment of infection. The surface of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, owing to the complex architecture of its cell envelope, expresses numerous adhesins with varied chemical nature, including proteins, lipids, lipoproteins, glycoproteins and glycopolymers. Studies on mycobacterial adhesins show that they bind with multifarious host receptors and extracellular matrix (ECM) components.
