Introduction: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections have emerged as a significant clinical challenge due to their intrinsic multidrug resistance and the limited efficacy of existing treatments. These infections are becoming increasingly prevalent, with a need for new and effective therapeutic strategies.
Areas Covered: This review addresses several key aspects of NTM infections: i) pathogenesis and epidemiology; ii) the limitations and challenges of current treatment options; iii) emerging and alternative therapeutic strategies; iv) advanced drug delivery systems such as nanoparticles and efflux pump inhibitors; v) innovative antibacterial alternatives like antimicrobial peptides, bacteriophage therapy, and phytochemicals; and vi) other potential treatment modalities such as inhaled nitric oxide, small molecules, surgical debridement, phototherapy, and immunomodulatory therapy.

The osteopontin (OPN) released from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) undergoing lineage differentiation can negatively influence the expansion of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in coculture systems developed for expanding HSCs. Therefore, minimizing the amount of OPN in the coculture system is important for the successful ex vivo expansion of HSCs. Toward this goal, a bioengineered three dimensional (3D) microfibrous-matrix that can maintain MSCs in less OPN-releasing conditions has been developed, and its influence on the expansion of HSCs has been studied.

The main objective of this study was to determine the cellular and molecular effects of doxycycline on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and protection against secondary injuries following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Microvascular hyperpermeability and cerebral edema resulting from BBB dysfunction after TBI leads to elevation of intracranial pressure, secondary brain ischemia, herniation, and brain death. There are currently no effective therapies to modulate the underlying pathophysiology responsible for TBI-induced BBB dysfunction and hyperpermeability.

Purpose: Identification of nonresponders prior to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy would help in the judicious clinical management of diabetic macular edema (DME) patients. Thus, a systematic study was initiated to identify nonresponding DME patient population undergoing ranibizumab treatment to figure out additional inflammatory components that may contribute to their nonresponsiveness to anti-VEGF therapy.
Methods: A total of 40 patients recruited to this investigator-initiated trial received intravitreal ranibizumab monthly for 3 months.

Phenotypic methods for detection of methicillin resistance in (MRSA) can be inaccurate due to heterogeneous expression of resistance and due to environmental factors that influence the expression of resistance. This study aims to compare various phenotypic methods of detection of methicillin resistance with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for gene and to detect the presence of oxacillin-susceptible MRSA (OS-MRSA). Bacterial cell surface adhesins play a major role in facilitating host colonization and subsequent establishment of infection. The surface of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, owing to the complex architecture of its cell envelope, expresses numerous adhesins with varied chemical nature, including proteins, lipids, lipoproteins, glycoproteins and glycopolymers.
