Endothelial colony forming cells (ECFCs) represent the most suitable cellular substrate to induce revascularization of ischemic tissues. Recently, optical excitation of the light-sensitive conjugated polymer, regioregular Poly (3-hexyl-thiophene), rr-P3HT, was found to stimulate ECFC proliferation and tube formation by activating the non-selective cation channel, Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 (TRPV1). Herein, we adopted a multidisciplinary approach, ranging from intracellular Ca imaging to pharmacological manipulation and genetic suppression of TRPV1 expression, to investigate the effects of photoexcitation on intracellular Ca concentration ([Ca]) in circulating ECFCs plated on rr-P3HT thin films.

Using mechanochemistry by grinding TPB and ZnBr, an poly-[]-catenane of interlocked M12L8 nanocages is obtained in good yields (∼80%) and within 15 minutes. The mechanical bond among the icosahedral M12L8 cages in the amorphous phase has been demonstrated by single crystal XRD, powder XRD and FT-IR spectroscopy following an transformation by guest uptake of the amorphous phase. High-resolution solid-state C NMR spectroscopy gives insights into the local structure of the catenane focusing on TPB aromatic-aromatic interactions.

The demand for effective, real-time environmental monitoring and for customized point-of-care (PoC) health, requires the ability to detect low molecular concentrations, using portable, reliable and cost-effective devices. However, traditional techniques often require time consuming, highly technical and laborious sample preparations, as well as expensive, slow and bulky instrumentation that needs to be supervised by laboratory technicians. Consequently, fast, compact, self-sufficient, reusable and cost-effective lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices, which can perform all the required tasks and can then upload the data to portable devices, would revolutionize any mobile sensing application by bringing the testing device to the field or to the patient.

Sustainable coatings for metal food packaging were prepared from ZnO nanoparticles (obtained by the thermal decomposition of zinc acetate) and a naturally occurring polyhydroxylated fatty acid named aleuritic (or 9,10,16-trihydroxyhexadecanoic) acid. Both components reacted, originating under specific conditions zinc polyaleuritate ionomers. The polymerization of aleuritic acid into polyaleuritate by a solvent-free, melt polycondensation reaction was investigated at different times (15, 30, 45, and 60 min), temperatures (140, 160, 180, and 200 °C), and proportions of zinc oxide and aleuritic acid (0:100, 5:95, 10:90, and 50:50, w/w).

In the fight against Malaria, new strategies need to be developed to avoid resistance of the parasite to pharmaceutics and other prevention barriers. Recently, a Host Directed Therapy approach based on the suppression of the starting materials uptake from the host by the parasite has provided excellent results. In this article, we propose the synthesis of bioisosteric compounds that are capable of inhibiting Choline Kinase and therefore to reduce choline uptake, which is essential for the development of the parasite.

Enzyme engineering is a tailoring process that allows the modification of naturally occurring enzymes to provide them with improved catalytic efficiency, stability, or specificity. By introducing partial modifications to their sequence and to their structural features, enzyme engineering can transform natural enzymes into more efficient, specific and resistant biocatalysts and render them suitable for virtually countless industrial processes. Current enzyme engineering methods mostly target the active site of the enzyme, where the catalytic reaction takes place.

Differential entropy, along with fractal dimension, is herein employed to describe and interpret the shape complexity of self-similar organic islands. The islands are imaged with in situ Atomic Force Microscopy, following, step-by-step, the evolution of their shape while deposition proceeds. The fractal dimension shows a linear correlation with the film thickness, whereas the differential entropy presents an exponential plateau.

We demonstrate the design of a neural network hardware, where all neuromorphic computing functions, including signal routing and nonlinear activation are performed by spin-wave propagation and interference. Weights and interconnections of the network are realized by a magnetic-field pattern that is applied on the spin-wave propagating substrate and scatters the spin waves. The interference of the scattered waves creates a mapping between the wave sources and detectors.

Charge transport in three-dimensional metal-halide perovskite semiconductors is due to a complex combination of ionic and electronic contributions, and its study is particularly relevant in light of their successful applications in photovoltaics as well as other opto- and microelectronic applications. Interestingly, the observation of field effect at room temperature in transistors based on solution-processed, polycrystalline, three-dimensional perovskite thin films has been elusive. In this work, we study the time-dependent electrical characteristics of field-effect transistors based on the model methylammonium lead iodide semiconductor and observe the drastic variations in output current, and therefore of apparent charge carrier mobility, as a function of the applied gate pulse duration.

Recent advancements in the field of electronics have paved the way to the development of new applications, such as tattoo electronics, where the employment of ultraconformable devices is required, typically achievable with a significant reduction in their total thickness. Organic materials can be considered enablers, owing to the possibility of depositing films with thicknesses at the nanometric scale, even from solution. However, available processes do not allow obtaining devices with thicknesses below hundreds of nanometres, thus setting a limit.

The spectral overlap between stimulated emission (SE) and absorption from dark states ( charges and triplets) especially in the near-infrared (NIR), represents one of the most effective gain loss channels in organic semiconductors. Recently, bottom-up synthesis of atomically precise graphene nanostructures, or nanographenes (NGs), has opened a new route for the development of environmentally and chemically stable materials with optical gain properties. However, also in this case, the interplay between gain and absorption losses has hindered the attainment of efficient lasing action in the NIR.

The instability of halide perovskites toward moisture is one of the main challenges in the field that needs to be overcome to successfully integrate these materials in commercially viable technologies. One of the most popular ways to ensure device stability is to form 2D/3D interfaces by using bulky organic molecules on top of the 3D perovskite thin film. Despite its promise, it is unclear whether this approach is able to avoid 3D bulk degradation under accelerated aging conditions, i.

Photothermal perturbation of the cell membrane is typically achieved using transducers that convert light into thermal energy, eventually heating the cell membrane. In turn, this leads to the modulation of the membrane electrical capacitance that is assigned to a geometrical modification of the membrane structure. However, the nature of such a change is not understood.

Biosensors are expected to revolutionize disease management through provision of low-cost diagnostic platforms for molecular and pathogenic detection with high sensitivity and short response time. In this context, there has been an ever-increasing interest in using electrolyte-gated field-effect transistors (EG-FETs) for biosensing applications owing to their expanding potential of being employed for label-free detection of a broad range of biomarkers with high selectivity and sensitivity while operating at sub-volt working potentials. Although organic semiconductors have been widely utilized as the channel in EG-FETs, primarily due to their compatibility with cost-effective low-temperature solution-processing fabrication techniques, alternative carbon-based platforms have the potential to provide similar advantages with improved electronic performances.

Although the efficiency of organic polymer-based retinal devices has been proved, the interpretation of the working mechanisms that grant photostimulation at the polymer/neuron interface is still a matter of debate. To contribute solving this issue, we focus here on the characterization of the interface between poly(3-hexyltiophene) films and water by the combined use of electrochemistry and mathematical modeling. Simulations well reproduce the buildup of photovoltage (zero current condition) upon illumination of the working electrode made by a polymer film deposited onto an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate.

Light-harvesting complex stress-related (LHCSR) proteins in green algae are essential for photoprotection via a non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), playing the dual roles of pH sensing and dissipation of chlorophylls excited-state energy. pH sensing occurs via a protonation of acidic residues located mainly on its lumen-exposed C-terminus. Here, we combine in vivo and in vitro studies to ascertain the role in NPQ of these protonatable C-terminal residues in LHCSR3 from .

Memory and cognitive functions depend on the cerebral levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), which are regulated by the phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) family of enzymes. Selected rolipram-related PDE4 inhibitors, members of the GEBR library, have been shown to increase hippocampal cAMP levels, providing pro-cognitive benefits with a safe pharmacological profile. In a recent SAR investigation involving a subset of GEBR library compounds, we have demonstrated that, depending on length and flexibility, ligands can either adopt a twisted, an extended or a protruding conformation, the latter allowing the ligand to form stabilizing contacts with the regulatory domain of the enzyme.

In past decades, the exploitation of silver nanoparticles in novel antibacterial and detection devices has risen to prominence, owing to the well-known specific interaction of silver with bacteria. The vast majority of the investigations focus on the investigation over the mechanism of action underpinning bacterial eradication, while few efforts have been devoted to the study of the modification of silver optical properties upon interaction with bacteria. Specifically, given the characteristic localized surface plasmon resonance of silver nanostructures, which is sensitive to changes in the charge carrier density or in the dielectric environment, these systems can offer a handle in the detection of bacteria pathogens.

Group VI transition metal chalcogenides are the subject of increasing research interest for various electrochemical applications such as low-temperature water electrolysis, batteries, and supercapacitors due to their high activity, chemical stability, and the strong correlation between structure and electrochemical properties. Particularly appealing is their utilization as electrocatalysts for the synthesis of energy vectors and value-added chemicals such as C-based chemicals from the CO reduction reaction (COR) or ammonia from the nitrogen fixation reaction (NRR). This review discusses the role of structural and electronic properties of transition metal chalcogenides in enhancing selectivity and activity toward these two key reduction reactions.
