The identification of immune correlates of protection against infectious pathogens will accelerate the design and optimization of recombinant and subunit vaccines. Systematic analyses such as immunoprofiling including serological, cellular, and molecular assessments supported by computational tools are key to not only identify correlates of protection but also biomarkers of disease susceptibility. The current study expands our previous cellular and serological profiling of vaccine-induced responses to a whole parasite malaria vaccine.

Introduction: Although the US Government considers threats of misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information to rise to the level of terrorism, little is known about service members' experiences with disinformation in the military context. We examined soldiers' perceptions of disinformation impact on the Army and their units. We also investigated associations between disinformation perceptions and soldiers' sociodemographic characteristics, reported use of fact-checking, and perceptions of unit cohesion and readiness.

Introduction: This prospective, multi-site, observational study describes ongoing efforts in support of the Fiscal Year 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Section 734 Blast Overpressure Study (BOS) to identify the acute effects impulse and blast exposure have on hearing abilities of the Warfighter in various military training environments.
Materials And Methods: Hearing thresholds, a binaural tone detection task, and auditory symptoms were collected before and immediately following weapons exposure across nine military training environments from January 2020 to October 2022. An additional 25 non-exposed control participants also completed the behavioral test battery.

Owing to evidence that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a dominant role in the traumatic brain injury (TBI) pathophysiology, the Western blot (WB) based immunoblotting method is widely employed to identify changes in the mitochondrial protein expressions after neurotrauma. In WB method, the housekeeping proteins (HKPs) expression is routinely used as an internal control for sample normalization. However, the traditionally employed HKPs can be susceptible to complex cascades of TBI pathogenesis, leading to their inconsistent expression.

As part of an Army pilot program, mandatory annual wellness checks were initiated to introduce individuals to counseling and to support psychological resilience and thriving. The program was evaluated using a cross-sectional survey completed by 7,831 soldiers. Findings revealed that about half of soldiers who reported a wellness check rated the check at least moderately helpful in their professional and personal lives.

Using a model of combat and operational stress reaction (COSR), our lab recently showed that exposure to an unpredictable combat stress (UPCS) procedure prior to a thermal injury increases pain sensitivity in male rats. Additionally, our lab has recently shown that circulating extracellular vesicle-microRNAs (EV-miRNAs), which normally function to suppress inflammation, were downregulated in a male rat model of neuropathic pain. In this current study, male and female rats exposed to UPCS, followed by thermal injury, were evaluated for changes in circulating EV-miRNAs.

We previously described five trajectories of insomnia (each defined by a distinct pattern of insomnia severity over 12 months following traumatic brain injury [TBI]). Our objective in the present study was to estimate the association between insomnia trajectory status and trajectories of mental health and neurocognitive outcomes during the 12 months after TBI. Although blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) has been designated as the signature injury of recent combat operations, its precise pathological mechanism(s) has not been identified thus far. Prior preclinical studies on bTBI demonstrated acute neuroinflammatory cascades which are known to be contributing to neurodegeneration. Danger-associated chemical patterns are released from the injured cells, which activate non-specific pattern recognition receptors, such as toll-like receptors (TLRs) leading to increased expression of inflammatory genes and release of cytokines.

Military service members need to be able to operate under conditions of extreme stress to ensure the success of their team's mission; however, an acute stress reaction (ASR) can compromise team safety and effectiveness by rendering an individual unable to function. Building on an intervention originally developed by the Israel Defense Forces, several countries have developed, tested, and disseminated a peer-based intervention to help service members manage acute stress in others. This paper reviews how five countries (Canada, Germany, Norway, the UK and the USA) adjusted the protocol to fit their organisational culture while retaining essential elements of the original procedure, suggesting there can be interoperability and mutual intelligibility in the management of ASR by military allies.

Insomnia, being highly prevalent in knee osteoarthritis, is understood to be a risk factor for systemic inflammation. Cerebral vascular autoregulation is impaired following resuscitation from cardiac arrest (CA), and its quantification may allow assessing CA-induced brain injury. However, hyperemia occurring immediately post-resuscitation limits the application of most metrics that quantify autoregulation. Therefore, to characterize autoregulation during this critical period, we developed three novel metrics based on how the cerebrovascular resistance (CVR) covaries with changes in cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP): (i) θ, which quantifies the CVR vs CPP gradient, (ii) a CVR-based transfer function analysis, and (iii) CVRx, the correlation coefficient between CPP and CVR.

Objectives: Excessive alcohol use can bring about adverse health and work-related consequences in civilian and military populations. Screening for excessive drinking can help identify individuals at risk for alcohol-related problems who may require clinical interventions. The brief validated measures of alcohol use such as the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), or abbreviated AUDIT-Consumption (AUDIT-C), are often included in military deployment screening and epidemiologic surveys, but appropriate cut-points must be used to effectively identify individuals at risk.
