Alcohol consumption is associated with a wide variety of preventable health complications and is a major risk factor for all-cause mortality in the age group 15-47 years. To reduce dangerous drinking behavior, eHealth applications have shown promise. A particularly interesting potential lies in the combination of eHealth apps with mathematical models.

Context: Health departments nationally are critically understaffed and lack infrastructure support. By examining current staffing and allocations through a Foundational Public Health Services (FPHS) lens at the Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH), there is an opportunity to make a strong case for greater investment if current dedicated full-time equivalents are inadequate and to guide which investments in public health workforce are prioritized.
Objective: To assess the use of the Public Health Workforce Calculator (calculator) and other tools to identify and prioritize FPHS workforce needs in a field application.

The benefit of levothyroxine treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is subject to debate. This study compared treatment satisfaction between older adults with SCH using levothyroxine or placebo. We analyzed pooled individual participant data from two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials investigating the effects of levothyroxine treatment in older adults with SCH.

This study aimed to determine the toxic effects of vascular CCM3 gene deficiency and lead (Pb) exposure on the nervous system. Lentiviral transfection was performed to generate a stable strain of brain microvascular endothelial cells with low CCM3 expression. MTT assay assessed the survival rate of cells exposed to Pb, determining the dose and duration of Pb exposure in vitro.

Background: Potential effect of greenspace exposure on human microbiota have been explored by a number of observational and interventional studies, but the results remained mixed. We comprehensively synthesized these studies by performing a systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.
Methods: Comprehensive literature searches in three international databases (PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science) and three Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and China Biology Medicine disc) were conducted from inception to November 1, 2023.

Transition from traditional high-fiber to Western diets in urbanizing communities of Sub-Saharan Africa is associated with increased risk of non-communicable diseases (NCD), exemplified by colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. To investigate how urbanization gives rise to microbial patterns that may be amenable by dietary intervention, we analyzed diet intake, fecal 16 S bacteriome, virome, and metabolome in a cross-sectional study in healthy rural and urban Xhosa people (South Africa). Urban Xhosa individuals had higher intakes of energy (urban: 3,578 ± 455; rural: 2,185 ± 179 kcal/d), fat and animal protein.

Purpose: Palbociclib has become the standard of care for estrogen receptor-positive (ER+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (HER2-) metastatic breast cancer, but real-world evidence in older women remains scarce. Therefore, we investigated tolerability of palbociclib in older women with metastatic breast cancer.
Methods: Consecutive women aged ≥ 70 with ER+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer, treated with palbociclib in any treatment line in six hospitals, were included.

One novel bisabolane-derived sesquiterpenoid retrobisabolane A (1), featuring a methyl group location at the C-4 position instead of C-3 in the bisabolanes, and a known ester-substituted eremophilane-type sesquiterpenoid cryptosphaerolide (2), along with three known indole alkaloids (3-5) were discovered from the fermented cultures of a deep-sea-derived fungus Retroconis fusiformis MCCC 3A00792. The planar structure of new compound 1 was determined by extensive analysis of the NMR and HRESIMS spectra. The relative and absolute configurations of 1 were resolved by the coupling constant (J), calculation of ECD and NMR spectra, and the DP4+ probability analysis of the H and C NMR data.

Cellular traction forces are contractile forces that depend on the material/substrate stiffness and play essential roles in sensing mechanical environments and regulating cell morphology and function. Traction forces are primarily generated by the actin cytoskeleton and transmitted to the substrate through focal adhesions. The cell nucleus is also believed to be involved in the regulation of this type of force; however, the role of the nucleus in cellular traction forces remains unclear.

Renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis (RTIF) is a common feature and inevitable consequence of all progressive chronic kidney diseases, leading to end-stage renal failure regardless of the initial cause. Although research over the past few decades has greatly improved our understanding of the pathophysiology of RTIF, until now there has been no specific treatment available that can halt the progression of RTIF. Norcantharidin (NCTD) is a demethylated analogue of cantharidin, a natural compound isolated from 1500 species of medicinal insect, the blister beetle (Mylabris phalerata Pallas), traditionally used for medicinal purposes.
