Background: Monitoring of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is currently based on serial measurements of maximum aortic diameter. Additional assessment of aneurysm volume has previously been proposed to possibly improve growth prediction and treatment decisions. To evaluate the use of supplementing volume measurements, the authors aimed to characterise the growth distribution of AAA volume and to compare the growth rates of the maximum diameter and volume at the patient level.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the burden of ischemic heart disease (IHD)-related mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) caused by dietary factors, as well as the influencing factors with age, period, and cohort effects, in regions with different social-demographic status from 1990 to 2019.

Methods: We extracted data on IHD mortality, DALYs, and age-standardized rates (ASRs) related to dietary risks from 1990 to 2019 as IHD burden measures. Hierarchical age-period-cohort analysis was used to analyze age- and time-related trends and the interaction between different dietary factors on the risk of IHD mortality and DALYs.

Using conventional optical coherence tomography (OCT), it is difficult to image Henle fibers (HF) due to their low backscattering potential. However, fibrous structures exhibit form birefringence, which can be exploited to visualize the presence of HF by polarization-sensitive (PS) OCT. We found a slight asymmetry in the retardation pattern of HF in the fovea region that can be associated with the asymmetric decrease of cone density with eccentricity from the fovea.

Trans-ethnic genome-wide association studies have revealed that many loci identified in European populations can be reproducible in non-European populations, indicating widespread trans-ethnic genetic similarity. However, how to leverage such shared information more efficiently in association analysis is less investigated for traits in underrepresented populations. We here propose a statistical framework, trans-ethnic genetic risk score informed gene-based association mixed model (GAMM), by hierarchically modeling single-nucleotide polymorphism effects in the target population as a function of effects of the same trait in well-studied populations.

Background: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified many single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with complex phenotypes in the European (EUR) population; however, the extent to which EUR-associated SNPs can be generalized to other populations such as East Asian (EAS) is not clear.

Results: By leveraging summary statistics of 31 phenotypes in the EUR and EAS populations, we first evaluated the difference in heritability between the two populations and calculated the trans-ethnic genetic correlation. We observed the heritability estimates of some phenotypes varied substantially across populations and 53.

Background: Genome-wide association studies have detected a large number of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with complex traits in diverse ancestral groups. However, the trans-ethnic similarity and diversity of genetic architecture is not well understood currently.

Results: By leveraging summary statistics of 37 traits from East Asian (N=254,373) or European (N=693,529) populations, we first evaluated the trans-ethnic genetic correlation (ρ) and found substantial evidence of shared genetic overlap underlying these traits between the two populations, with [Formula: see text] ranging from 0.

The history of circadian rhythm research in Austria.

Wien Klin Wochenschr

April 2024

Department for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, General Hospital Vienna AKH, Medical University of Vienna, 1090, Vienna, Austria.

In view of the recent revival of interest in circadian biology and circadian epidemiology at the Medical University of Vienna, it seems appropriate to highlight the rich and pioneering history of circadian research in Austria. Among the forefathers of circadian research in Vienna are Otto Marburg (1874-1948), who discovered important elements of the pineal gland physiology, Robert Hofstätter (1883-1970), who used pineal gland extract in obstetrics/gynecology, and Paul Engel (1907-1997), who discovered that the pineal gland was controlled by light. More recently, Vera Lapin (1920-2007) showed that surgical removal of the pineal gland increased tumor growth, while Franz Waldhauser (*1946) investigated melatonin in conjunction with night work.
