Purpose: The etiology and pathophysiology of vaccine-associated chronic urticaria (CU) remain unclear, particularly during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Thus, this study aimed to comprehensively investigate the global burden and long-term trends of vaccine-associated CU, with a focus on the associated vaccines and the distribution of cases across different age groups and sexes.

Methods: Using data from the World Health Organization international pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase), which encompasses reports from 156 countries and territories between 1968 and 2023, we systematically analyzed the global burden and long-term trends in vaccine-associated CU reports (total individual case safety reports = 131,255,418).

Access to mental healthcare for migrants is a global problem, with many challenges and barriers, including the issue of language discordance. Most research on this topic comes from well-resourced countries such as those in Europe, Northern America, and Australasia despite the fact that most migration occurs from poorer contexts, such as many in Africa, into more closely situated countries. As an introductory part of a broader international study, we started out investigating the views of key stakeholders in South Africa on language barriers to accessing mental healthcare for migrants and suggestions for how to address these.

Article Synopsis
  • - Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have lasting mental health effects, but the impact of specific ACE patterns on cognitive function, particularly executive function, is not well understood.
  • - A study of 2,515 college students in northern China identified three ACE patterns: low adversity, multiple adversity, and family environment adversity, with family environment adversity linked to executive function impairments.
  • - The study found that focusing on specific ACE patterns rather than just cumulative scores offers a clearer picture of their effects, suggesting that targeted prevention strategies should be developed for different risk profiles.

Measuring financial distress in German cancer patients: development and validation of the Financial Distress of Cancer Assessment Tool (FIAT).

ESMO Open

December 2024

Methods in Empirical Social Research, Institute of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science, Dresden University of Technology, Dresden, Germany.

Background: Cancer diagnosis and therapy can lead to significant financial distress for those affected, even in universal health care systems. We present the development and validation of a patient-reported outcome measure for financial distress in German cancer patients.

Methods: Validation of the newly developed instrument followed a two-step approach, including two quantitative paper-pencil surveys (N1 = 111, N2 = 267) with patients of all types of cancer and treatment status at two German university hospitals.

Background: Sexual orientation discrimination increases the risks of negative health outcomes for sexual minorities. Previous studies have found increased rates of eating disorder symptoms in sexual minority individuals, which is attributable to minority stress and discrimination that they experience. Emerging research suggests relationships between sexual orientation discrimination and eating disorder symptoms.

  • The Linearbandkeramik (LBK) Neolithic communities were pioneers in spreading agriculture across Europe and this study showcases genetic data from 250 individuals to understand their ancestry.
  • The findings reveal a notable difference in ancestry, with eastern LBK sites having a higher percentage of western hunter-gatherer genetics compared to western sites, indicating separate genetic paths for these groups.
  • Additionally, the research suggests a patrilocal social structure, featuring more genetic connections among males within sites, and points out that the massacre at Asparn-Schletz likely involved individuals from a large population rather than a small community.

November 2024

Research Center for Medical Artificial Intelligence, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 518055 Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Background: In this study, we explored the interplay between exogenous orienting attention and emotional audiovisual integration (AVI) via electroencephalography (EEG).

Methods: We designed a 2 (cue validity: valid, invalid) × 3 (emotion types: happiness, neutral and sadness) × 3 (modality: visual, auditory, audiovisual) discrimination task on the basis of the cue-target paradigm. Twenty-two participants (average age: 21.

The high prevalence of obesity in Latino families with low income necessitates prevention beginning in pregnancy and continuing through infancy. Due to systemic inequities, adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) and mental health symptoms may limit program efficacy by presenting barriers to attendance. We sought to assess: (1) the feasibility of the Starting Early Program (StEP) Prenatal, a 17-session intervention beginning early in pregnancy and continuing to 18 months postpartum; and (2) the effects of adverse SDoH (material hardship, low social support) and mental health symptoms (depression, anxiety, stress) on program attendance.

This paper is a study of the decisions that researchers take during the execution of a research plan: their researcher discretion. Flexible research methods are generally seen as undesirable, and many methodologists urge to eliminate these so-called 'researcher degrees of freedom' from the research practice. However, what this looks like in practice is unclear.

Applied humanities as the antidote for the malaise of bioethics.

Med Health Care Philos

November 2024

Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy for Life, Vatican, Rome, Italy.

The present paper highlights the urgency for a revitalization of the field of bioethics. The authors have identified the "malaise" present in contemporary bioethics, and they claim that it has become a boring way to approach medicine and life sciences instead of challenging them. Starting from a brief explanation of the origin of bioethics, this paper analyzes the main issues at the core of its malaise, i.

Electronic address:

The reconstruction of demographic history using ancient and modern genomic resources reveals extensive interactions and admixture between ancient nomadic pastoralists and the social organizations of the Chinese Central Plain. However, the extent to which Y-chromosome genetic legacies from nomadic emperor-related ancestral lineages influence the Chinese paternal gene pool remains unclear. Here, we genotype 2717 ethnolinguistically diverse samples belonging to C2a lineages, perform whole-genome sequencing on 997 representative samples and integrate these data with ancient genomic sequences.

Heart failure (HF) is characterized by significant symptoms, compromised quality of life, frequent hospital admissions, and high mortality rates; palliative care (PC) is, therefore, highly relevant for patients with HF and their clinicians. Multiple guidelines and consensus statements recommend the provision of PC alongside HF management. However, few resources exist to guide the integration of PC into HF care, for both primary PC (provided by HF clinicians in the course of HF care) and specialty PC (provided by PC specialists).
