Breast cancer, a global health concern affecting women, has been linked to alterations in the gut microbiota, impacting various aspects of human health. This study investigates the interplay between breast cancer and the gut microbiome, particularly focusing on colonization resistance-an essential feature of the microbiota's ability to prevent pathogenic overgrowth. Using a mouse model of breast cancer, we employ diversity analysis, co-occurrence network analysis, and robustness tests to elucidate the impact of breast cancer on microbiome dynamics.

Cancer remains a worldwide cause of morbidity and mortality. Investigational research efforts have included the administration of tumor-derived extracts to healthy animals. Having previously demonstrated that the administration of non-transmissible, human cancer-derived homogenates induced malignant tumors in mice, here, we examined the consequences of administering 50 or 100 µg of protein of crude homogenates from mammary carcinoma, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, and melanoma samples in 6 inoculations per week during 2 months.

Changes in cerebral blood flow (CBF) during a hyperglycemic challenge were mapped, using perfusion-weighted MRI, in a group of non-human primates. Seven female baboons were fasted for 16 h prior to 1-h imaging experiment, performed under general anesthesia, that consisted of a 20-min baseline, followed by a bolus infusion of glucose (500 mg/kg). Although congenital thumb absence has been reported frequently in humans, their occurrence in macaques is rare. We observed three cases of spontaneous thumb defects in captive female rhesus monkeys. One animal exhibited bilateral absence and two other presented unilateral thumb absence, all with metacarpal integrity.

Saimiri (squirrel monkey) is a neotropical primate of the Simian genus that has been bred in captivity for the development of research into human and animal health. They have been widely used in studies in ophthalmology, toxicology, pharmacology, psychiatry, neuroscience, vaccines and drug tests (such as malaria and measles agents), as well as effects on interactive behavior and cognition of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in man. Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) therapies have been proven clinically effective for a variety of epithelial tumours. Vaccination of mice with the extracellular domain (ECD) of autologous EGFR overcomes the tolerance to self-EGFR and has antimetastatic effect on EGFR+ tumour. Because EGF/EGFR-signalling plays an important role in the inflammation stage of wound healing, the main objective of this study was to explore the possible role of murine (m) EGFR-ECD vaccine in the croton-oil-induced ear oedema and wound healing process in mice as autologous experimental models, mimicking the possible post-surgical wound complication in patients treated with human EGFR-ECD/VSSP vaccine.

Obesity is a risk factor for several diseases including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to compare the relationships of waist circumference and body weight with circulating markers of metabolic, cardiovascular, and hepatic function in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). After a 12-h fast, blood was collected from 39 adult captive chimpanzees for measurement of serum glucose, BUN, creatinine, albumin, cholesterol, ALT, AST, ALP, total and direct bilirubin, triglyceride, and insulin, and waist circumference and body weight were measured.

Cleft lip (with or without cleft palate) has been documented in several species of nonhuman primates, which in general are susceptible at similar doses and stages of gestation to the same teratogens as humans. Cleft lip can be unilateral or bilateral, isolated, syndromic, familial, or genetic. Here we report the first case of syndromic cleft lip and palate in a male bare-eared squirrel monkey (Saimiri ustus).

Intranasal delivery provides a practical, noninvasive method of bypassing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in order to deliver therapeutic agents to the brain. Anti-idiotypic monoclonal antibodies (mAb) have been evaluated for actively induced immunotherapy with encouraging results. However, rational combination of cancer vaccines with chemotherapy may improve the therapeutic efficacy of these two approaches used separately. A spontaneous mammary gland ductal carcinoma was diagnosed in a 13-year-old female captive rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). The expression of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) was studied to investigate the correlation between the histologic invasiveness and cell proliferation activity assay for predicting the biologic behavior of this tumor type. The results of this study show that the AgNOR size in tumor cells reflect the degree of malignancy when compared with the pattern of peripheral blood lymphocytes of the same individual.
