Demonstration and evaluation of a method for assessing mediated moderation.

Mediated moderation occurs when the interaction between two variables affects a mediator, which then affects a dependent variable. In this article, we describe the mediated moderation model and evaluate it with a statistical simulation using an adaptation of product-of-coefficients methods to assess mediation. We also demonstrate the use of this method with a substantive example from the adolescent tobacco literature.

Impact of federal Substance Abuse Block Grants on state substance abuse spending: literature and data review.

Background: The federal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant (SAPTBG) was established by the U.S. Congress to assist the states in funding substance abuse treatment services.

The implications of cultural orientation for substance use among American Indians.

American Indians were interviewed about their participation in traditional culture and their substance use behaviors. Analyses indicated that cultural orientation differed by age and employment status. Bicultural or less Indian oriented individuals were more likely to misuse alcohol than their more Indian oriented counterparts.

Alcohol craving predicts drinking during treatment: an analysis of three assessment instruments.

Objective: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the utility of thee craving instruments to predict drinking during treatment. The three assessments used were the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS), the Alcohol Urge Questionnaire (AUQ) and Items 1-6 of the Obsessive subscale (OBS) of the Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS).

Method: The three instruments were administered during the course of a 9-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 100 mg/day of naltrexone, and a manual-based psychosocial intervention using the BRENDA manual conducted at the University of Pennsylvania's Treatment Research Center.
