Methanol poisoning can occur through consumption of methanol-containing alcohols, especially in areas where production, distribution, sale and consumption of alcohol is lawfully prohibited. Due to its toxic potency, determination of methanol in alcoholic solutions is important. Although giant fennel is recognized as a "superfood" rich in phytochemicals with antioxidant activity, research into the antibacterial properties of its fruits has been relatively limited, compared to studies involving the root and aerial parts of the plant. In this study, seven solvents-acetone, methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform, water, and hexane-were used to extract the chemical constituents of the fruit of giant fennel (Ferula communis), a species of flowering plant in the carrot family Apiaceae. Specific attributes of these extracts were investigated using in silico simulations and in vitro bioassays.

Distributions of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and fecal viral biomarkers between solid and liquid phases of wastewater are largely unknown. Herein, distributions of SARS-CoV-2, Pepper Mild Mottle Virus (PMMoV), and F-RNA bacteriophage group II (FRNAPH-II) were determined by viral RNA RT-qPCR. Determining superoxide dismutase content and catalase activity in mammalian cell lines.

Traditional methods for determining superoxide dismutase (SOD) content and catalase (CAT) activity rely on measuring the absorbance of individual tissue (biological) samples using a cuvette and spectrophotometer, rather than cell cultures. Although there are kits available for SOD and CAT assays, these allow for high-throughput analysis of samples and might be too expensive for research laboratories in countries from the Global South, such as South Africa. This paper describes a simple and cost-effective method to determine SOD content and CAT activity in mammalian cell cultures following exposure to environmental chemical mixtures by measuring absorbance in 96-well microplates.

The present study used diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) samplers deployed in situ at a wastewater-impacted site (Clarkboro Ferry) for 20 days to develop a predictive model between time-weighted mean concentrations of seven selected antipsychotic compounds in water and those in resident benthic invertebrates, specifically crayfish (Faxonius virilis). The model was further combined with a model of desorption of antipsychotic compounds to predict kinetics at the sediment-water interface. Antipsychotic compounds were mostly detected in adult crayfish and internal concentrations were similar among targeted compounds, except for lesser concentrations of duloxetine.
