Background Age-related heart diseases are significant contributors to increased morbidity and mortality. Emerging evidence indicates that mitochondria within cardiomyocytes contribute to age-related increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation that plays an essential role in aging-associated cardiac diseases. Methods and Results The present study investigated differences between ROS production in cardiomyocytes isolated from adult (6 months) and aged (24 months) Fischer 344 rats, and in cardiac tissue of adult (18-65 years) and elderly (>65 years) patients with preserved cardiac function.

Objective: To examine maternal childhood adversity in relation to increased risk for maternal and infant perinatal complications and newborn Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admittance.

Methods: A sample of 164 women recruited at their first prenatal appointment participated in a longitudinal study through 6 weeks postdelivery. Participants self-reported on their adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), negative health risks (overweight/obesity, smoking, and alcohol use), adverse infant outcomes, NICU admittance, and maternal perinatal complications across three pregnancy assessments and one post-birth assessment.

Optical colonoscopy is an essential diagnostic and prognostic tool for many gastrointestinal diseases, including cancer screening and staging, intestinal bleeding, diarrhea, abdominal symptom evaluation, and inflammatory bowel disease assessment. However, the evaluation, classification, and quantification of findings from colonoscopy are subject to inter-observer variation. Automated assessment of colonoscopy is of interest considering the subjectivity present in qualitative human interpretations of colonoscopy findings.

Background: Cerebrovascular autoregulation (CA) is a protective mechanism that enables the cerebral vasculature to automodulate tone in response to changes in cerebral perfusion pressure to ensure constant levels of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygen delivery. CA can be impaired after neurological injury and contributes to secondary brain injury. The granular retrosplenial cortex (RSG) is critical for both spatial and non-spatial behaviors, but the underlying neural codes remain poorly understood. Here, we use optogenetic circuit mapping in mice to reveal a double dissociation that allows parallel circuits in superficial RSG to process disparate inputs. The anterior thalamus and dorsal subiculum, sources of spatial information, strongly and selectively recruit small low-rheobase (LR) pyramidal cells in RSG.

Integrated microfluidic cellular phenotyping platforms provide a promising means of studying a variety of inflammatory diseases mediated by cell-secreted cytokines. However, immunosensors integrated in previous microfluidic platforms lack the sensitivity to detect small signals in the cellular secretion of proinflammatory cytokines with high precision. Clinical informatics (CI) is a rich field with longstanding ties to resident education in many clinical specialties, although a historic gap persists in emergency medicine. The etiology of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is largely unknown, but evidence for mutations in utero and long latency periods suggests that environmental factors play a role. Therefore, we used untargeted metabolomics of archived newborn dried blood spots (DBS) to investigate neonatal exposures as potential causal risk factors for AML. Background: Low-biomass microbiome studies (such as those of the lungs, placenta, and skin) are vulnerable to contamination and sequencing stochasticity, which obscure legitimate microbial signal. While human lung microbiome studies have rigorously identified sampling strategies that reliably capture microbial signal from these low-biomass microbial communities, the optimal sampling strategy for characterizing murine lung microbiota has not been empirically determined. Performing accurate, reliable characterization of murine lung microbiota and distinguishing true microbial signal from noise in these samples will be critical for further mechanistic microbiome studies in mice.
