Background: Motor activity fluctuations in healthy adults exhibit fractal patterns characterized by consistent temporal correlations across wide-ranging time scales. However, these patterns are disrupted by aging and psychiatric conditions. This study aims to investigate how fractal patterns vary across the sleep-wake cycle, differ based on individuals' recency of depression diagnosis, and change before and after a depressive episode.

The daily association between positive affect and psychotic experiences in individuals along the early stages of the psychosis continuum.

Front Psychiatry

August 2024

Department of Psychiatry, Interdisciplinary Centre Psychopathology and Emotion Regulation, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands.

Introduction: Psychosis often develops gradually along a continuum of severity. Little is known about the role of protective factors such as positive affect (PA) in the development of psychotic experiences (PEs). This study investigated i) the temporal (between-day) and contemporaneous (within-day) daily associations between PA and PEs in individuals at different early clinical stages for psychosis and ii) whether these associations differed per clinical stage.

Despite important progress in modern medicine, widely regarded as an indispensable foundation of healthcare in all highly advanced nations and regions, not all patients respond well to available treatments in biomedicine alone. Additionally, there are concerns about side effects of many medications and interventions, the unsustainable cost of healthcare and the low resolution of chronic non-communicable diseases and mental disorders whose incidence has risen in the last decades. Besides, the chronic stress and burnout of many healthcare professionals impairs the therapeutic relationship.

Introduction: Studies have consistently demonstrated increased stress sensitivity in individuals with psychosis. Since stress sensitivity may play a role in the onset and maintenance of psychosis, this could potentially be a promising target for treatment. The current study was the first to investigate whether reactivity to and recovery from daily-life stressors in psychosis change in response to treatment, namely virtual-reality-based cognitive behavioral therapy (VR-CBT).

Introduction: In 2021, a computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system with an integrated clinical decision support system (CDSS) was implemented at a tertiary care center for the treatment of mental health conditions in Lübeck, Germany. To date, no study has been reported on the types and prevalence of drug-related problems (DRPs) before and after CPOE implementation in a psychiatric inpatient setting. The aim of this retrospective before-and-after cohort study was to investigate whether the implementation of a CPOE system with CDSS accompanied by the introduction of regular medication plausibility checks by a pharmacist led to a decrease of DRPs during hospitalization and unsolved DRPs at discharge in psychiatric inpatients.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique gaining more attention in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Due to the phenotypic heterogeneity of NDDs, tDCS is unlikely to be equally effective in all individuals. The present study aimed to establish neuroanatomical markers in typically developing (TD) individuals that may be used for the prediction of individual responses to tDCS.

Prevalence of Somatic Symptoms and Somatoform Disorders among a German Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Sample.

Children (Basel)

February 2024

Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, Center for Integrative Psychiatry, School of Medicine, 24105 Kiel, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Somatoform disorders (SD) are a significant healthcare issue starting in adolescence, with high rates of somatic symptoms among psychiatric inpatients aged 11-17.
  • In a study of 371 inpatients, 93.8% reported experiencing somatic symptoms in the past six months, and nearly half had symptoms within the week before the study.
  • The findings indicate a strong link between somatic symptoms, anxiety, and depression, highlighting the need for routine screening of somatic symptoms in psychiatric evaluations to detect SD early.

Background: Digital media-use disorders (DMUD) in adolescents are a rising phenomenon associated with psychological distress, comorbid mental disorders, and high burden on affected families. Since the ICD-11 introduced criteria for gaming disorder, these can now be transferred to describe additional DMUD associated with social media platforms and streaming services. Most evidence for effective treatments comes from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT).

Individual-specific change points in circadian rest-activity rhythm and sleep in individuals tapering their antidepressant medication: an actigraphy study.

Sci Rep

January 2024

Department of Psychiatry (CC72), Interdisciplinary Center Psychopathology and Emotion Regulation (ICPE), University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, P.O. Box 30.001, 9700 RB, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Group-level studies showed associations between depressive symptoms and circadian rhythm elements, though whether these associations replicate at the within-person level remains unclear. We investigated whether changes in circadian rhythm elements (namely, rest-activity rhythm, physical activity, and sleep) occur close to depressive symptom transitions and whether there are differences in the amount and direction of circadian rhythm changes in individuals with and without transitions. We used 4 months of actigraphy data from 34 remitted individuals tapering antidepressants (20 with and 14 without depressive symptom transitions) to assess circadian rhythm variables.

Relating stability of individual dynamical networks to change in psychopathology.

PLoS One

November 2023

University Medical Center Groningen, Department of Psychiatry, Interdisciplinary Centre Psychopathology and Emotion regulation, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

One hypothesis flowing from the network theory of psychopathology is that symptom network structure is associated with psychopathology severity and in turn, one may expect that individual network structure changes with the level of psychopathology severity. However, this expectation has rarely been addressed directly. This study aims to examine (1) the stability of individual contemporaneous symptom networks over a one-year period and (2) whether network stability is associated with a change in psychopathology.

The added value of daily diary data in 1- and 3-year prediction of psychopathology and psychotic experiences in individuals at risk for psychosis.

Psychiatry Res

November 2023

Dept of Psychiatry, Interdisciplinary Centre Psychopathology and Emotion regulation, University of Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Hanzeplein 1 (Entrance 24- Triade), Groningen 9700 RB, the Netherlands.

This study aimed to assess whether adding information on psychological experiences derived from a daily diary to baseline cross-sectional data could improve short- (1-year) and long-term (3-years) prediction of psychopathology and positive psychotic experiences (PEs). We used 90-day daily diary data from 96 individuals in early subclinical risk stages for psychosis. Stepwise linear regression models were built for psychopathology and PEs at 1- and 3-years follow-up, adding: (1) baseline questionnaires, (2) the mean and variance of daily psychological experiences, and (3) individual symptom network density.

Background: Molecular brain tumor diagnosis is usually dependent on tissue biopsies or resections. This can pose several risks associated with anesthesia or neurosurgery, especially for lesions in the brain stem or other difficult-to-reach anatomical sites. Apart from initial diagnosis, tumor progression, recurrence, or the acquisition of novel genetic alterations can only be proven by re-biopsies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined how three different methods for prioritizing symptoms in cancer survivors (patient preference, symptom severity, and timing of symptoms) influenced treatment recommendations for issues like fear of recurrence, depression, and fatigue.
  • - Results showed limited agreement among the methods, with moderate correlation between patient preference and symptom severity; many patients preferred treatment for fatigue, while symptom severity primarily indicated treatment for fear of recurrence.
  • - The findings suggest that these three methods lead to varying treatment suggestions, highlighting the need for further research and the importance of involving patients in decision-making to tailor psychological interventions effectively.

Background: Both anxiety and depressive disorders are associated with significant long-term disability. Since experienced impairments vary between patients independent of diagnosis and disease severity, identifying transdiagnostic factors that predict the course of disability may provide new targets to reduce disability. This study examines transdiagnostic factors predicting the 2-year disability outcome in patients with anxiety and/or depressive disorders (ADD), focusing on potentially malleable factors.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique with a wide variety of clinical and research applications. As increasingly acknowledged, its effectiveness is subject dependent, which may lead to time consuming and cost ineffective treatment development phases. We propose the combination of electroencephalography (EEG) and unsupervised learning for the stratification and prediction of individual responses to tDCS.
