Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, is a chronic inflammatory disease. Although typically associated with inflammation of the lungs and other peripheral tissues, increasing evidence has uncovered neurological consequences attributable to Mtb infection. These include deficits in memory and cognition, increased risk for neurodegenerative disease, and progressive neuropathology.

Background: We aimed to assess associations between black carbon (BC) and non-accidental mortality among advance-aged adults in China.
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study in 22 provinces of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. We calculated concentrations of 3-year average BC, fine particulate matter (PM2.

Replications are important for assessing the reliability of published findings. However, they are costly, and it is infeasible to replicate everything. Accurate, fast, lower-cost alternatives such as eliciting predictions could accelerate assessment for rapid policy implementation in a crisis and help guide a more efficient allocation of scarce replication resources.

: Influenza poses a substantial health burden, especially among older adults in China. While vaccination is one of the most effective preventions, influenza vaccine uptake rates among Chinese older adults remain low. This study examines the individual and combined effects of behavioral interventions based on the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model and economic incentives in promoting influenza vaccine uptake among older adults living in China.

Objective: Theoretical work suggests that moral psychological processes-those pertaining to the interests or welfare of others-are a key driver of overtreatment at the end of life. We examined patient moral processes and their associations with distress and treatment decision-making.
Method: During structured interviews with 116 patients with advanced cancer and a poor prognosis, Likert scale items were used to operationalize (a) moral emotions: feeling shame and guilt about cancer getting worse, (b) moral motives for cancer treatment: perceiving an obligation to family for continuing potentially nonbeneficial treatments, and (c) moral performance: putting up the appearance of feeling better than how one is really feeling (5-point response scale, ).

This study investigated between-person associations among PTSD symptoms, fear of emotion, and perceived couple communication difficulties in a dyadic context among 64 trauma-exposed, mixed gender community couples (N = 128 individuals) using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model. Individuals with higher PTSD symptoms endorsed greater fear of their emotions (β = .72; β = .

Embryonic development is orchestrated by the action of morphogens, which spread out from a local source and activate, in a field of target cells, different cellular programs based on their concentration gradient. Fibroblast growth factor 8 (Fgf8) is a morphogen with important functions in embryonic organizing centers. It forms a gradient in the extracellular space by free diffusion, interaction with the extracellular matrix (ECM), and receptor-mediated endocytosis.

Present theories on adult development and aging offer insights into how aging is characterized by gains and losses across different domains (e.g., social, emotional, physical, and cognitive).

Introduction: During aging, many cellular processes, such as autophagic clearance, DNA repair, mitochondrial health, metabolism, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) levels, and immunological responses, become compromised. Urolithin A (UA) and Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) are two naturally occurring compounds known for their anti-inflammatory and mitochondrial protective properties, yet the effects of these natural substances on microglia cells have not been thoroughly investigated. As both UA and NR are considered safe dietary supplements, it is equally important to understand their function in normal cells and in disease states.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) increases the susceptibility of bone fragility. The underlying mechanisms have, however, remained largely unknown. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short single-stranded non-coding RNA molecules with utility as biomarkers due to their easy accessibility and stability in bodily fluids.

Background: The daily dynamics among affect, physical activity, and sleep are often explored by taking a unidirectional approach. Yet, obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the reciprocal dynamics among affect and health behaviors is crucial for promoting daily well-being.
Purpose: This study examined the reciprocal associations among affect, physical activity, and sleep in daily life in a U.

Context: Sclerostin inhibits canonical Wnt signaling, a pathway promoting bone formation. The effects of vitamin D3, omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3s), and exercise on serum sclerostin levels and bone metabolism are unclear.
Objective: To investigate the effects of 2000 IU/d vitamin D3, 1g/d omega-3s, and a simple home-based strength exercise program (SHEP), alone or in combination, on serum sclerostin and bone turnover marker levels.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of soluble amyloid-β oligomers (AβOs) in the brain, which disrupt synaptic function and promote cognitive decline. Here, we investigated the effects of AβOs on excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission and plasticity by performing stereotaxic injections of AβOs directly into the hippocampal CA1 region, followed by hippocampal slice isolation for electrophysiological measurements. AβOs injections altered basal excitatory synaptic transmission, reducing field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) and impairing excitatory long-term potentiation (LTP).

Objectives: To investigate the association between body pain and physical frailty among older adults in India and to examine whether this association is mediated by symptoms of depression and insomnia.
Methods: Data were obtained from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India, comprising 31,464 adults aged 60 and older. Physical frailty was assessed using a modified version of the frailty phenotype developed by Fried and colleagues.

Inhibition of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has emerged as a promising cancer therapy strategy due to its essential role in the metabolic transformation of cancer cells. In this study, 53 derivatives of 1-hydroxy(and 1-alkoxy, 1-acyloxy)indoles were designed, synthesized, and biologically evaluated. Several multi-substituted 1-hydroxy(and 1-alkoxy, 1-acyloxy)indole compounds exhibited inhibitory activity against the LDH-A isoform (LDHA).

Background: We aimed to investigate how self-reported physical and cognitive limitations (challenges), self-efficacy, and social support interacted with life satisfaction in adolescents and young adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) or acquired heart disease, among whom life satisfaction may be impaired.
Methods: "Adolescence with Heart Disease" was a cross-sectional, nationwide survey of patients with CHD or early acquired heart disease aged 15-25. Structural equation modeling was used to test the implied latent variable mediation model between the main outcome of interest (life satisfaction) and challenges, social support, and self-efficacy.

This study investigated the effects of ambient cold exposure on inflammatory pain development, synovial cytokine levels, and spinal cord glial cell activation. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (6 weeks old) were divided into Cold and RT groups. The Cold group was exposed to cold (4 ± 1 °C) for 6 h/day for 5 consecutive days, while the RT group remained at room temperature (22 ± 1 °C).
