Garlic and its lipid-based extracts have played an important medicinal role in humans for centuries that includes antimicrobial, hypoglycemic, and lipid-lowering properties. The present study was to investigate the effects of crude garlic extract (CGE) on the proliferation of human breast, prostate, hepatic, and colon cancer cell lines and mouse macrophageal cells, not previously studied. The human cancer cell lines, such as hepatic (Hep-G2), colon (Caco-2), prostate (PC-3), and breast (MCF-7), were propagated at 37°C; air/CO2 (95:5 v/v) using the ATCC-formulated RPMI-1640 Medium and 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), while the mouse macrophage cell line (TIB-71) was propagated at 37°C; air/CO2 (95:5 v/v) using the ATCC-formulated DMEM and 10% FBS.

This article reports on the preparation of a water-soluble nanoemulsion of the highly lipid-soluble drug Dacarbazine (DAC). In addition, relative to suspensions of DAC, the nanoemulsion preparation demonstrated a lower zeta-potential (decreased negative charge, less anionic and more cationic) which has previously been associated with influencing drug membrane permeability. This study also reports that, relative to suspensions of DAC with a mean particle size of 5470 nm, nanoemulsions of DAC having mean particle sizes of 131 nm were more efficacious.

Aspirin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, widely used for its anti-inflammatory properties is associated with several systemic side effects including gastro-intestinal discomfort. Inflammation can be mediated by pro-inflammatory cytokines and, along with various other host factors eventually give rise to edema at the inflamed site. Because of the adverse side effects oftentimes associated with systemic exposure to aspirin, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether the anti-inflammatory property of aspirin would enhance if delivered as nano-emulsion preparation.

Increased bioavailability of a transdermal application of a nano-sized emulsion preparation.

The aim of this study was to compare the transdermal application of a nano-sized emulsion versus a micron-sized emulsion preparation of delta tocopherol as it relates to particle size and bioavailability. Two separate experiments were performed using seven F1B Syrian Golden hamsters, 1 week apart. Each emulsion preparation consisted of canola oil, polysorbate 80, deionized water and delta tocopherol; the only difference between the two preparations was processing the nano-sized emulsion with the Microfluidizer Processor.

Neuroblastoma, the most common form of childhood cancer, may arise from a biochemical block of cellular differentiation and a resultant continuation of a proliferative state. Neuroblastoma often spontaneously reverts by undergoing partial differentiation and ultimate degeneration and may be associated with the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We have recently reported in neuroblastoma cell culture studies that an anti-oxidant synergy formulation (ASF) can induce differentiation and buffer neuronal degeneration and oxidative stress in cultured cortical neurons and in central nervous system tissue of apolipoprotein E-deficient mice.

Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the macular pigment of the retina, and are reported to be associated with a reduced incidence of age-related macular degeneration. A rich source of lutein and zeaxanthin in the American diet is the yolk of chicken eggs. Our laboratory has reported that the hypolipidemic effect of rice bran oil (RBO) is not entirely explained by its fatty acid composition. Because RBO has a greater content of the unsaponifiables, which also lower cholesterol compared to most vegetable oils, we wanted to know whether oryzanol or ferulic acid, two major unsaponifiables in RBO, has a greater cholesterol-lowering activity. Previous studies have demonstrated that low density lipoprotein (LDL) enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are more susceptible to oxidation (ex vivo) than those containing monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA).
