Palliative Care in a Pandemic: A Multicenter Cohort of Critically Ill Patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019.

Surg Infect (Larchmt)

March 2023

Division of General Surgery, Trauma, and Surgical Critical Care, Department of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA.

Trends in mortality, palliative care, and end-of-life care among critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remain underreported. We hypothesized that use of palliative care and end-of-life care would increase over time, because improved understanding of the disease course and prognosis would potentially lead to more frequent use of these services. Adult patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection (SARS-CoV-2) during pandemic wave one (W1: March 2020 to September 2020) or wave two (W2: October 2020 to June 2021) admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) in one of six northeastern U.

Background: Upper extremity (UE) vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA; hand transplantation) is a reconstructive treatment option for patients with UE loss. Approximately 37 UE VCAs have been performed in the United States to date; thus, little is known about long-term psychosocial outcomes and whether the benefits outweigh the risks. To make an informed treatment decision, patients must understand the procedure, risks, and potential benefits of UE VCA.

The firearm mortality rate in West Virginia (WV) increased over the past four years and is currently 50% higher than the national rate. These alarming statistics, combined with the urban-to-rural shift in firearm injuries, prompted this 10-year epidemiologic overview. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the current study stands alone as the only report of its kind on firearm injuries in the rural setting of southern WV.

Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois.

Introduction: We explored patient, caregiver, and provider recommendations for development of a tool kit to implement enhanced recovery protocols (ERPs) for pediatric patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. ERPs are widely used for adults to decrease hospital length of stay, hospital costs, and complications while hastening patient recovery after surgery. With limited data available for ERPs among pediatric populations informed modification of adult ERPs is needed to facilitate successful implementation for pediatric surgery.

Modernization of a Large Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders Registry: The Veterans Administration Experience.

Arch Rehabil Res Clin Transl

December 2022

Department of Veterans Affairs, Center of Innovation for Complex Chronic Health Care (CINCCH), Edward Hines Junior Hospital, Hines, IL.

Since the 1990s, Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has maintained a registry of Veterans with Spinal Cord Injuries and Disorders (SCI/Ds) to guide clinical care, policy, and research. Historically, methods for collecting and recording data for the VHA SCI/D Registry (VSR) have required significant time, cost, and staffing to maintain, were susceptible to missing data, and caused delays in aggregation and reporting. Each subsequent data collection method was aimed at improving these issues over the last several decades.
