Sunlight is widely seen as one of the most abundant forms of renewable energy, with photovoltaic cells based on pn junctions being the most commonly used platform attempting to harness it. Unlike in conventional photovoltaic cells, the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) allows for the generation of photocurrent and photovoltage in a single material without the need to engineer a pn junction and create a built-in electric field, thus offering a solution that can potentially exceed the Shockley-Queisser efficiency limit. However, it requires a material with no inversion symmetry and is therefore absent in centrosymmetric materials.

To precisely evaluate the potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for gas separation and purification applications, it is crucial to understand how various molecules competitively adsorb inside MOFs. In this paper, we combine in situ infrared spectroscopy with ab initio calculations to investigate the mechanisms associated with coadsorption of several small molecules, including CO, NO, and CO inside the prototypical structure Ni-MOF-74. Surprisingly, we find that the displacement of CO bound inside Ni-MOF-74 (binding energy of 53 kJ/mol) is readily driven by CO exposure, even though CO has a noticeably weaker binding energy of only 41 kJ/mol; meanwhile, the significantly more strongly binding NO molecule (90 kJ/mol) is not able to easily displace bound CO inside Ni-MOF74.

High-Q Nanophotonics over the Full Visible Spectrum Enabled by Hexagonal Boron Nitride Metasurfaces.

Adv Mater

March 2023

Chair in Hybrid Nanosystems, Nanoinstitute Munich, and Center for NanoScience, Faculty of Physics, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Königinstraße 10, 80539, München, Germany.

All-dielectric optical metasurfaces with high quality (Q) factors have been hampered by the lack of simultaneously lossless and high-refractive-index materials over the full visible spectrum. In fact, the use of low-refractive-index materials is unavoidable for extending the spectral coverage due to the inverse correlation between the bandgap energy (and therefore the optical losses) and the refractive index (n). However, for Mie resonant photonics, smaller refractive indices are associated with reduced Q factors and low mode volume confinement.

Logic-in-memory (LIM) has emerged as an energy-efficient computing technology, as it integrates logic and memory operations in a single device architecture. Herein, a concept of ternary LIM is established. First, a p-type 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT) transistor is combined with an n-type PhCH-benzo[de]isoquinolino[1,8-gh]quinolone diimide (PhC2-BQQDI) transistor to obtain a binary memory inverter, in which a zinc phthalocyanine-cored polystyrene (ZnPc-PS) layer serves as a floating gate.

Heterointerfaces between two-dimensional (2D) materials and bulk metals determine the electrical and optical properties of their heterostructures. Although deposition of various metals on 2D materials has been studied, there is still a lack of studies on the interaction at the van der Waals (vdW) heterointerface between 2D materials and metals. Here, we report quasi-van der Waals (qvdW) epitaxial recrystallization of a gold thin film into crystallographically aligned single crystals by encapsulation annealing of a gold thin film with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN).

Moiré Potential, Lattice Relaxation, and Layer Polarization in Marginally Twisted MoS Bilayers.

Nano Lett

January 2023

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 136 Frelinghuysen Rd, Piscataway, New Jersey 08854, United States.

Artificially twisted heterostructures of semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer unprecedented control over their electronic and optical properties via the spatial modulation of interlayer interactions and structural reconstruction. Here we study twisted MoS bilayers in a wide range of twist angles near 0° using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. We investigate the twist angle dependence of the moiré pattern, which is dominated by lattice reconstruction for small angles (<2°), leading to large triangular domains with rhombohedral stacking.

Unmethylated cytosine-phosphate-guanosine oligodeoxynucleotides (CpG ODNs) induce inflammatory cytokines and type I interferons (IFNs) to activate the immune system. To apply CpG ODNs as vaccine adjuvants, the cellular uptake and stability of phosphodiester-based, non-modified ODNs require further improvement. Previously developed new CpG ODNs forming guanine-quadruplex (G4) structures showed higher nuclease resistance and cellular uptake than linear CpG ODNs; however, the complex formation of G4-CpG ODNs with antigen proteins is necessary for their application as vaccine adjuvants.

The detection of trace amounts of water in organic solvents is of great importance in the field of chemistry and in the industry. Karl Fischer titration is known as a classic method and is widely used for detecting trace amounts of water; however, it has some limitations in terms of rapid and direct detection because of its time-consuming sample preparation and specific equipment requirements. Here, we found that a DNA-based nanomechanical sensor exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity to water vapor, leading to the detection and quantification of trace amounts of water in organic solvents as low as 12 ppm in THF, with a ppb level of LoD through their vapors.

Photoinduced charge transfer in van der Waals heterostructures occurs on the 100 fs timescale despite weak interlayer coupling and momentum mismatch. However, little is understood about the microscopic mechanism behind this ultrafast process and the role of the lattice in mediating it. Here, using femtosecond electron diffraction, we directly visualize lattice dynamics in photoexcited heterostructures of WSe/WS monolayers.

We demonstrated an all-dry polymer-to-polymer transfer technique for two-dimensional (2D) crystal flakes using a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) layer deposited on a piece of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Unexpectedly, the pickup/release temperatures were modified in wider temperature range simply by changing the thickness of the PVC layer than changing the plasticizer ratio. Utilizing the difference in the pickup/release temperatures depending on the PVC film thickness, 2D flakes were transferred from a thicker PVC film to a thinner one.

Ultrafast response of spontaneous photovoltaic effect in 3R-MoS-based heterostructures.

Sci Adv

December 2022

Department of Physics and Astronomy, The University of British Columbia, 6224 Agricultural Road, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z1, Canada.

Rhombohedrally stacked MoS has been shown to exhibit spontaneous polarization down to the bilayer limit and can sustain a strong depolarization field when sandwiched between graphene. Such a field gives rise to a spontaneous photovoltaic effect without needing any p-n junction. In this work, we show that the photovoltaic effect has an external quantum efficiency of 10% for devices with only two atomic layers of MoS at low temperatures, and identify a picosecond-fast photocurrent response, which translates to an intrinsic device bandwidth at ∼100-GHz level.

We introduce a novel two-dimensional electronic system with ultrastrong interlayer interactions, namely, twisted bilayer graphene with a large twist angle, as an ideal ground for realizing interlayer-coherent excitonic condensates. In these systems, sub-nanometer atomic separation between the layers allows significant interlayer interactions, while interlayer electron tunneling is geometrically suppressed due to the large twist angle. By fully exploiting these two features we demonstrate that a sequence of odd-integer quantum Hall states with interlayer coherence appears at the second Landau level ( = 1).

Article Synopsis
  • Electronic and optical behaviors in two-dimensional materials are heavily influenced by moiré superlattices, which are created by slight misalignments in layered materials.
  • Using advanced cryogenic techniques, researchers simultaneously captured the structural changes and the behavior of low-energy excitons in a specific rotated configuration of WS-WSe moiré superlattice.
  • Their findings show that the exciton wave function is tightly confined around certain stacking sites, suggesting that manipulating strain on a nanoscale can lead to new properties and functionalities in these materials.

Physical reservoir computing has recently been attracting attention for its ability to substantially reduce the computational resources required to process time series data. However, the physical reservoirs that have been reported to date have had insufficient computational capacity, and most of them have a large volume, which makes their practical application difficult. Here, we describe the development of a Li electrolyte-based ion-gating reservoir (IGR), with ion-electron-coupled dynamics, for use in high-performance physical reservoir computing.

Charge Transfer Dynamics in MoSe/hBN/WSe Heterostructures.

Nano Lett

December 2022

Department of Physics, University of California, Berkeley, California94720, United States.

Ultrafast charge transfer processes provide a facile way to create interlayer excitons in directly contacted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers. More sophisticated heterostructures composed of TMD/hBN/TMD enable new ways to control interlayer exciton properties and achieve novel exciton phenomena, such as exciton insulators and condensates, where longer lifetimes are desired. In this work, we experimentally study the charge transfer dynamics in a heterostructure composed of a 1 nm thick hBN spacer between MoSe and WSe monolayers.
