Thermodynamic study on hydrated bilayers of ether-linked phosphatidylcholines with terminal perfluorobutyl group.

Novel terminally perfluorobutyl group-containing ether-linked phosphatidylcholines with different alkyl chain lengths (di-O-F4-Cn-PCs, n = 14,16 and 18) were developed as possible materials for stable liposomes aiming at applications of structural and functional analyses of membrane proteins. Differential scanning calorimetric investigations of the thermotropic transition of hydrated di-O-F4-Cn-PC bilayers demonstrated that the transition temperature of every di-O-F4-Cn-PC decreases by ~20 °C compared to their corresponding non-fluorinated PCs, di-O-Cn-PCs. With the elongation of the hydrophobic chain, on the other hand, the transition enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) increased in a linear manner.

Colorectal cancer (CRC), the third most common cancer worldwide, remains highly lethal as the disease only becomes symptomatic at an advanced stage. Growing evidence suggests that histone deacetylases (HDACs), a group of epigenetic enzymes overexpressed in precancerous lesions of CRC, may represent promising molecular targets for CRC treatment. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) have gradually become powerful anti-cancer agents targeting epigenetic modulation and have been widely used in the clinical treatment of hematologic malignancies, while only few studies on the benefit of HDACis in the treatment of CRC.

The antioxidant poly (lactic acid) bilayer active films with a different distribution of α-tocopherol (TOC) in two layers (outer layer/inner layer: 0%/6%, 2%/4%, 3%/3%, 4%/2%, 6%/0%) were developed. The effects of TOC distribution on the structural, physicochemical, mechanical, antioxidant and release properties of the films and their application in corn oil packaging were investigated. The different distributions of TOC showed insignificant effects on the color, transparency, tensile strength and oxygen and water vapor barrier properties of the films, but it affected the release behavior of TOC from the films into 95% ethanol and the oxidation degree of corn oil.

In order to investigate the simultaneous exposure to hypoxia and ammonia-N on oxidative stress, immune response, and apoptosis of the hybrid grouper, 120 healthy groupers were selected for hypoxia and/or ammonia-N exposure experiment. The fish were divided into four experimental groups: hypoxia and ammonia-N group, hypoxia group, ammonia-N group, and control group. The results demonstrated that ammonia-N and hypoxia exposures induced the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities increased first and then decreased, and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulated.

We synthesized a new silyl porphyrin derivative conjugated with 6-deoxy-6-sulfo-α-d-glucopyranose (SGlc). Conjugation with SGlc improved A549 cellular uptake without significant changes in the photophysical and photochemical properties and subcellular localization. This improved cellular uptake led to enhanced photodynamic activity.

Folate (vitamin B9) and cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiencies potentially affect millions of people worldwide, leading to different pathologies. In Ethiopia, the diet is characterized by high consumption of fermented cereal-based foods such as injera, a good source of folate but not of cobalamin, which is only found in foods of animal origin that are rarely consumed. Some of the bacteria responsible for the fermentation of cereals can synthesize cobalamin, but whether or not fermented cereal food products contain cobalamin remains underexplored.

The effects of allicin and antioxidant of bamboo leaves (AOB) on the quality of bullfrogs () during refrigerated storage (4 °C) were investigated. The quality changes in samples treated with deionized water (CK), allicin solution (All), antioxidant of bamboo leaves (AOB), and allicin solution combined with AOB solution (AA) in microbiological, physicochemical, and sensory evaluation were analyzed, respectively. The results demonstrated that combination treatment inhibited the increase in total viable counts, delayed the decrease in amino acid content, and retarded the sensory deterioration.

This review presents a survey of two extremely important technologies about CO with the effectiveness of controlling microorganisms - atmospheric pressure CO-based modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and high pressure CO non-thermal pasteurization (HPCD). CO-based MAP is effectively in delaying the lag and logarithmic phases of microorganisms by replacing the surrounding air, while HPCD achieved sterilization by subjecting food to either subcritical or supercritical CO for some time in a continuous, batch or semi-batch way. In addition to the advantages of healthy, eco-friendly, quality-preserving, effective characteristic, some challenges such as the high drip loss and packaging collapse associated with higher concentration of CO, the fuzzy mechanisms of oxidative stress, the unproven specific metabolic pathways and biomarkers, etc.

Microorganisms, lipids, and proteins always interact in a complex way in the fish matrix, which becomes a hindrance to evaluate the quality of the individual factors affecting them. Despite growing urbanization, our understanding of the impacts of water and sanitation on human health has largely come from studies in rural sectors. To this end, we collected data at both regional (water quality measures from water treatment systems) and community (cross-sectional surveys) scales to examine determinants of enteric pathogen infection and diarrheal disease among infants in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Regionally, the Legedadi water treatment plant had significantly lower heterotrophic plate counts, total coliform counts, and fecal coliform counts compared with the Gefersa water treatment plant.
