São Paulo State University (Unesp), School of Technology and Sciences, Presidente Prudente, R. Roberto Simonsen, 305 - Pres., Prudente, SP, 19060-900, Brazil.

There is growing evidence on the association between meeting the recommendations of isolated movement behaviors (physical activity, sedentary time, and sleep) with anxiety and depressive symptoms. However, the joint association of meeting the 24 h movement guidelines with anxiety and depressive symptoms is still unknown. The aim of this study was to analyze the association of meeting 24-hour movement guidelines with symptoms of anxiety and of depression in adults.

Acknowledging the detrimental effects of prolonged sitting, this study examined the effects of an acute exercise break during prolonged sitting on executive function, cortical hemodynamics, and microvascular status. In this randomized crossover study, 71 college students completed three conditions: (i) uninterrupted sitting (SIT); (ii) SIT with a 15 min moderate-intensity cycling break (MIC); and (iii) SIT with a 15 min vigorous-intensity cycling break (VIC). Behavioral outcomes, retinal vessel diameters (central retinal artery equivalents [CRAE], retinal vein equivalents [CRVE], arteriovenous ratio [AVR]), cortical activation, and effective connectivity were evaluated.

Department of Primary Care & Public Health, Public Health Policy Evaluation Unit, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, 90 Wood Lane, London, W12 0BZ, UK.

Background: The Universal Infant Free School Meal (UIFSM) policy was introduced in 2014/15 in England and Scotland for schoolchildren aged 4-7 years, leading to an increase in school meal uptake. UK school meals are known to be healthier and less industrially processed than food brought from home (packed lunches). However, the impact of the UIFSM policy on the quantity of ultra-processed food (UPF) consumed at school during lunchtime is unknown.

Secular trends and sociodemographic disparities in physical activity among adults in eleven African countries: WHO STEPS 2003-2020.

Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act

October 2024

Center for Epidemiological Research in Nutrition and Health, Department of Nutrition, School of Public Health, Universidade de São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Background: Mortality from physical inactivity-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is projected to surpass deaths from communicable diseases by 2030 in Africa. Monitoring physical activity (PA) is important for planning public health interventions addressing NCDS and planetary health, but there is a dearth of evidence on PA trends in Africa. This study explored the secular trends in overall and domains of PA (leisure, occupation, and transport), and examined the gender, age, and education disparities in PA trends across African countries.

  • - This study assessed the effectiveness of international BMI references and an allometric BMI reference for diagnosing obesity in U.S. children and adolescents, using data from over 17,000 participants collected between 1999-2006 and 2011-2018.
  • - The MULT growth reference showed the best balance of sensitivity (0.92-0.96) and specificity (0.94) for boys, while for girls, the MULT references also displayed high accuracy (sensitivity 0.95-0.97, specificity 0.92).
  • - Overall, the MULT growth reference outperformed the others and specifically highlighted that girls have a higher fat mass than boys at equivalent BMI values, suggesting it may be a

  • This research looked at people with HIV in Denmark who started treatment for HIV and how likely they were to get tuberculosis (TB) after six months.
  • Out of nearly 7,000 people, 84 got TB, especially those who were not born in Denmark or who had used injectable drugs.
  • The study found that people with controlled HIV (low virus levels) and who weren't exposed to certain risks had a TB risk similar to everyone else, while those with higher risks needed more attention for TB.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic caused psychological distress, which has been linked to emotional eating and an addiction to ultra-processed foods (UPFs).
  • A study with 368 Brazilian undergraduates found that addiction symptoms to UPFs significantly mediate the relationship between pandemic-related stress and emotional eating behaviors.
  • Results indicate that 61% of the stress's impact on emotional eating is attributable to UPF addiction, highlighting the need for public health strategies to focus on overcoming UPF addiction among stressed students.

Background: Comprehensive research evidence is lacking on the role of ultra-processed foods (UPF) in the relationship between the consumption of plant-sourced foods and their impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes. This study aims to assess CVD risk associated with the dietary contribution of food groups that consider both plant or animal origin and food processing categories, within a large cohort of British adults.

Methods: Data from the UK Biobank participants (40-69 y) who completed at least two 24-h dietary recalls between 2009 and 2012 (n = 126,842; median follow-up: 9 y), with subsequent data linkage to hospital and mortality records, were used.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis

November 2024

Center for Epidemiological Research in Nutrition and Health, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; Department of Preventive Medicine, School of Medicine, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the relationship between the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and the fatty acid profile of diets in Portugal, highlighting that higher UPF intake correlates with poorer dietary quality.
  • Data from a 2015-2016 cross-sectional survey revealed that both adults and the elderly had higher levels of total, saturated, and trans fatty acids when consuming UPF, while beneficial fatty acid ratios were lower.
  • The findings suggest that reducing UPF consumption could significantly improve fatty acid intake and overall diet quality for both demographic groups in Portugal.
