Direct air capture (DAC) may gain prominence due to its versatile applications for either carbon removal (direct air carbon capture and storage, DACCS) or synthetic fuel production (direct air carbon capture and utilization, DACCU). Through a comprehensive and time-dynamic techno-economic assessment, we explore the conditions for synthetic fuels from DACCU to become cost-competitive with an emit-and-remove strategy based on DACCS under 2050 CO and climate neutrality targets.

This study describes the preparation of novel hybrid aerogels derived from gelatin (Gel), incorporating Br-functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66-Br; MOF) as modifying agent to effectively eliminate phosphate and fluoride ions from aqueous environments. The adsorption performance of MOF decorated Gel (Gel-xMOF) hybrid aerogels was investigated under different conditions, including agitation time, adsorbent dosage, solution pH, initial phosphate and fluoride concentrations, coexisting ions, and temperature. The functional groups of the gelatin network, coupled with UiO-66-Br, enhanced the adsorption performance of phosphate and fluoride ions from aqueous solutions.

A catalytic system has been developed, utilizing metal nanoparticles confined within a chitosan‑carbon black composite hydrogel (M-CH/CB), aimed at improving ease of use and recovery in catalytic processes. Considering the effectiveness of amino groups in binding metal oxyanions, this study investigates the adsorption performance and mechanism of amino-functionalized MCM-41 for Mo(VI), with the goal of efficiently remediating Mo-contaminated wastewater. ConspectusWater-in-salt electrolytes (WiSEs) are promising electrolytes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), offering critical advantages like nonflammability and improved safety. These electrolytes have extremely high salt concentrations and exhibit unique solvation structures and transport mechanisms dominated by the formation of ion networks and aggregates. These ion networks are central to the performance of WiSEs, govern the transport properties and stability of the electrolyte, deviating from conventional dilute aqueous or organic electrolytes.

Electrospinning is a versatile technique for obtaining nano/micro fibers which are able to significantly change the active properties of composite materials and bring in new dimensions to agri-food applications. Composite bio-based packaging materials obtained from whey proteins, functionalized with thyme essential oil (TEO) and reinforced by electrospun polylactic acid (PLA) fibers, represent a promising solution for developing new active food packaging using environmentally friendly materials. The aim of this study is to obtain and characterize one-side-active composite films covered with a PLA fiber mat: (i) WF/G1, WF/G2, and WF/G3 resulting from electrospinning with one needle at different electrospinning times of 90, 150, and 210 min, respectively, and (ii) WF/G4 obtained with two face-to-face needles after 210 min of electrospinning.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based materials are the most researched polymers in the field of energy harvesting. Their production in thin-film form through printing technologies can potentially offer several manufacturing and performance advantages, such as low-cost, low-temperature processing, use of flexible substrates, custom design, low thermal inertia and surface-scaling performance. However, solution-based processes, like printing, miss fine control of the microstructure during film-forming, making it difficult to achieve a high level of polarization, necessary for PVDF to exhibit electroactive characteristics.

This study systematically investigated the effect of organic solvent addition on the detection signal intensity of 15 organic pesticides in water using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS). The analysis of chromatographic peak area ratios in ultrapure water (UPW) versus 30% methanol (MeOH)-UPW showed that the adsorption effects (AEs, mainly from injection vials with weaker polarity) were the main factor influencing the detection intensity of the organic pesticides. The AEs varied with pesticide type and concentration, especially for those with high logK values and longer retention times, such as malathion, triadimefon, prometryn, S-metolachlor, diazinon, and profenofos.
