Background: Coronary and thoracic aortic calcification was associated with stroke, coronary heart, and peripheral vascular disease. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is significantly associated with insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus and hepatic steatosis. We aimed to investigate the relationship between HCV infection and coronary, thoracic aortic atherosclerosis.

Background: Observational studies and meta-analyses have indicated associations between blood lipid profiles and asthma. However, the causal association is unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the causal relationship between blood lipid profiles and asthma using bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis.

In this study, we compared 12 mm cell culture inserts with permeable polyester membranes (0.4 μm pores) from two different manufacturers: CELLTREAT® and Corning®. Physical dimensions and masses of the inserts were found to be very similar between the two brands, with CELLTREAT® inserts having a slightly smaller diameter and growth area (11.

Energy-based surgical instruments produce surgical smoke, which contains harmful byproducts, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, and viable microorganisms. The research setting has shifted from the laboratory to the operating room. However, significant heterogeneity in the methods of detection and placement of samplers, diversity in the tissue operated on, and types of surgeries tested has resulted in variability in detected levels and composition of surgical smoke.

Degradation of antibiotics through electrocatalytic oxidation has recently been comprehended as a promising strategy in wastewater treatment. Herein, nitrogen and sulphur doped graphene oxide (N,S-rGO) nanosheets were synthesized and employed as metal-free anodic material for electrochemical degradation of antibiotics, viz. metronidazole (MNZ) and tetracycline (TC).

The purpose of this study was to investigate genetic factors associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) by conducting a large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Taiwan, addressing the limited data on Asian populations compared to Western populations. Using data from the Taiwan Biobank, comprehensive clinical and genetic information from 107,230 Taiwanese individuals was analyzed. Genotyping data from the TWB1.

Macrophage populations exist on a spectrum between the proinflammatory M1 and proresolution M2 states and have demonstrated the ability to reprogram between them after exposure to opposing polarization stimuli. Particulate matter (PM) has been repeatedly linked to worsening morbidity and mortality following respiratory infections and has been demonstrated to modify macrophage function and polarization. The purpose of this study was to determine whether diesel exhaust particles (DEP), a key component of airborne PM, would demonstrate polarization state-dependent effects on human monocyte-derived macrophages (hMDMs) and whether DEP would modify macrophage reprogramming.

Objective: Due to recent increases in the use of vaping devices, there is a high demand for research addressing the respiratory health effects of vaping products. Given the constantly changing nature of the vaping market with new devices, flavors, metals, and other chemicals rapidly emerging, there is a need for inexpensive and highly adaptable vaping device exposure systems. Here, we describe the design and validation of a novel aerosol exposure system for toxicity testing of vaping devices.

Accordingly, there is a need to characterize the morphology and molecular characteristics of NCFB bronchioles. Test the hypothesis that NCFB exhibits a major component of bronchiolar disease manifest by mucus plugging and ectasia.

Background: The aging process increases body fat and susceptibility to heat-related illnesses. The relationship between body composition and symptoms associated with exposure to extreme heat among the elderly is unclear. Additionally, the influence of individual adaptive behaviors in mitigating these risks has not been adequately explored.

Air pollution is a risk factor for asthma and respiratory infection. Avoidance of air pollution is the best approach to mitigating the impacts of pollution. Personal preventive strategies are possible, but policy interventions are the most effective ways to prevent pollution and its effect on asthma and respiratory infection.

Extracellular vesicle (EV)-mediated intercellular communication significantly influences pulmonary cell health and disease, yet methods to investigate these mechanisms are limited. We hypothesize that organotypic models of the airway can be leveraged to investigate EV-mediated intercellular signaling, focusing on EV proteomic content as a case study. Two airway culture models were evaluated by mass spectrometry-based proteomics analysis: a tri-culture model consisting of alveolar epithelial, fibroblast, and lung microvascular endothelial cells and a co-culture model of alveolar epithelial and fibroblasts.

Background: Air pollutants, including particulates from wood smoke, are a significant cause of exacerbation of lung disease. γ-Tocopherol is an anti-inflammatory isoform of vitamin E that has been shown to reduce allergen-, ozone-, and endotoxin-induced inflammation.
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether γ-tocopherol would prevent experimental wood smoke-induced airway inflammation in humans.

Although blood pressure variability (BPV) and reperfusion are associated with parenchymal hematoma (PH) after stroke, the relationship between BPV and PH in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients who are at risk of reperfusion injury with frequent spontaneous recanalization is unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether BPV within the first 48 h is associated with PH within 72 h in patients with AF and stroke in terms of major vessel occlusion status. A total of 131 patients with AF that were admitted within 24 h after stroke onset were enrolled.

Background: Environmental exposure to peanut through non-oral routes is a risk factor for peanut allergy. Early-life exposure to air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), is associated with sensitization to foods through unknown mechanisms. We investigated whether PM promotes sensitization to environmental peanut and the development of peanut allergy in a mouse model.
