Cyanobacterial toxins are the most common algal toxins, which are highly toxic and can persist in the aquatic environment without easy degradation, posing risks to the ecosystem and human health that cannot be ignored. Although microbiological methods for the removal of cyanobacterial toxins from aqueous environments are highly efficient, their degradation efficiency is susceptible to many abiotic environmental factors. In this paper, Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and its microbial degrading enzymes were selected to study the effects of common environmental factors (temperature (T), NO, NH, Cu, Zn) and their levels during microbial degradation of cyanobacterial toxins in aqueous environments by using molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, analytical factor design, and the combined toxicokinetics of TOPKAT (toxicity prediction).

Water blooms frequently appear in the aquatic environment with global warming. However, traditional methods for treating water bloom usually require the addition of algaecides, which may lead to secondary environmental pollution problems in the water environment. To solve this problem, researchers have initiated efforts to harness pre-existing chemical substances within aquatic environments to regulate algal blooms, thereby pioneering novel avenues for water body management.

In this study, we explore the relationship between community structure and transcriptional activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria during cold temperature nitrification failure in three parallel full-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) treating municipal wastewater. In the three reactors, ammonia concentrations increased with declines in wastewater temperature below 15°C. We quantified and sequenced 16S rRNA and ammonia monooxygenase () gene fragments in DNA and RNA extracts from activated sludge samples collected from the SBRs during the warmer seasons (summer and fall) and when water temperatures were below 15°C (winter and spring).

As hotspots for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have attracted global attention. However, there lacks a sufficient metagenomic surveillance of antibiotic resistome in the WWTPs located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Here, metagenomic approaches were used to comprehensively investigate the occurrence, mobility potential, and bacterial hosts of ARGs in influent and effluent of 18 WWTPs located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

This review considers the interaction of microplastics (MPs)/nanoplastics (NPs) and co-existing contaminants, including organic contaminants, potentially toxic elements (PTEs), and metal/metal-oxide nanoparticles. Stronger adsorption between plastic particles and co-existing contaminants can either facilitate or prevent more contaminants to enter plankton. The characteristics of MPs/NPs, such as polymer type, size, functional groups, and weathering, affect combined effects.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been regarded as emerging pollutants due to their potential risk of resistance. Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is the main pathway for ARGs to lead to environmental threats. Therefore, the inhabitation of ARGs' HGT can effectively inhibit ARGs' potential drug resistance risk within a single strain.

Pollution characteristics and spatial distributions of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in surface water samples were investigated in Taihu Lake in 2010 and 2019, respectively. A hybrid model based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) and the health risk assessment model were employed for quantifying the contributions of sources to PFASs concentrations and the source risks. The method contained two stages:1 the sources of PFASs were apportioned using the PMF model, and 2 the contribution of health risks from each source was quantitively estimated.
