Parabens and triclocarban are widely applied as antimicrobial preservatives in foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care products. However, few studies have been conducted on large-scale biomonitoring of parabens and triclocarban in the Chinese general population. In the present study, there were 1157 urine samples collected from 26 Chinese provincial capitals for parabens and triclocarban measurement to evaluate the exposure levels, spatial distribution, and influencing factors, as well as associated health risks in the Chinese population.

Bisphenol A (BPA), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and their substitutes are commonly used in everyday products. However, large-scale internal exposure levels of them in China, the factors influencing on them, and the associated health risks were not systematically investigated still. In the present study, there were 1157 morning urine samples collected from residents of 26 provincial capitals in China for the measurement of BPA and seven bisphenol analogues, as well as TBBPA and its substitutes, i.

Electronic address:

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) derived from the incomplete combustion of organic materials are associated with adverse health effects. However, little is known about PAH exposure levels and their influencing factors on a large scale in developing countries. In this study, urinary monohydroxylated metabolites of PAHs (OH-PAHs), including the metabolites of naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene, chrysene, and benzo[a]pyrene, were measured in 1154 samples in the general population nationwide from 26 provincial capitals in China.

Phthalates (PAEs) are popular synthetic chemicals used as plasticizers and solvents for various products, such as polyvinyl chloride or personal care products. Human exposure to PAEs is associated with various diseases, resulting in PAE biomonitoring in humans. Inhalation, dietary ingestion, and dermal absorption are the major human exposure routes.

A rapid and sensitive method for the determination of earthy-musty odorous compounds, 2-methylisoborneol, 2-isopropyl-3-methoxy pyrazine, 2,4,6-trichloroanisole, 2,3,6-trichloroanisole, and geosmin, in water samples has been developed. The method was based on coupling a new polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction system with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The PVDF hollow fibers have high porosity and an enhanced solvent compatibility for extraction of the target analytes.

A rapid method for determination of sodium cyclamate in foods and beverages was developed. Sodium cyclamate was converted to N,N-dichloridecyclohexylamine by reaction with sodium hypochlorite under acid condition. N,N-dichloridecyclohexylamine was subsequently extracted by n-hexane and determined by gas chromatography.

Metformin is one of the most common adulterants found in anti-diabetic dietary supplements and herbal medicines. An analytical method based on hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC)/tandem mass spectrometry was developed and validated for the determination of metformin in dietary supplements and herbal medicines. Sample preparation involved solid phase extraction of the analyte using Plexa PCX cartridges, and cleanup by a primary-secondary amine (PSA) adsorbent for minimization of the matrix effect.

A sorbent was synthesized and investigated for molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE). Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) were synthesized via precipitation polymerization procedure, where 4-vinyl pyridine (4-VP) was used as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as cross-linking agent. The imprinting effect of the MISPE was evaluated by elution experiments.

Objectives: HIV disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM), but HIV prevalence among MSM in Guangzhou has not shown the rapid increasing trend as it has elsewhere in China. The aim of this study is to detect the epidemic and to determine the characteristics of MSM in Guangzhou susceptible to HIV.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey with serological testing for HIV, syphilis, HBV and HCV through long-chain referral sampling strategy to help control the bias generated from non-statistic sampling.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults over 18 in Guangdong province in 2002, identifying high-risk populations and regions.
  • The research used a multi-stage randomized sampling method, collecting socioeconomic data through interviews and measuring height and weight through physical check-ups, with a sample size of 15,130 individuals.
  • Results indicated that 16.8% were overweight and 1.8% obese, with significant differences between urban and rural areas, and key risk factors included income, age, gender, smoking, exercise, and residence location, highlighting the need for integrated prevention strategies.
