Introduction: Falls are the primary cause of unintentional fatalities among individuals aged 65 and older. Enhancing research on fall prevention among older adults is an urgent priority. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of falls among community-dwelling older adults in Guangzhou, China, with a particular emphasis on the impact of family functioning.

Background: Central obesity was considered as a risk factor for falls among the older population. Waist circumference (WC), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), and the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) are considered as surrogate markers for abdominal fat deposition in increasing studies. Nevertheless, the longitudinal relationship between these indices and falls among the older population remains indistinct.

Background: Several studies have demonstrated that older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have a higher risk of falls compared to those without T2DM, which may lead to disability and a lower quality of life. While, limited prospective studies have quantified the associations in southern China. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study to quantify the associations between T2DM and falls and investigate the risk factors of falls among community-dwelling elderly people in Guangzhou, China.

  • Multimorbidity, or having two or more chronic diseases, is a growing health issue in major cities like Guangzhou, China, with limited research on its prevalence and patterns.
  • A study conducted through surveys in 2009, 2013, and 2018 found that the prevalence of multimorbidity among adults increased significantly, from 12.69% to 35.13% over the nine years.
  • Findings indicate that most people had multiple chronic conditions instead of just one, highlighting the need for effective health policies to manage multimorbidity within primary healthcare settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Falls are a significant public health issue for the elderly in Guangzhou, China, accounting for 49.41% of injuries from 2014 to 2018, with monthly cases peaking in December and minimal in April.
  • The study found positive correlations between monthly elderly falls and wind speed, while atmospheric pressure negatively affected fall rates, indicating weather influences these incidents.
  • A multiple linear regression model revealed that wind speed and atmospheric pressure are independent factors impacting falls among the elderly, suggesting weather-related prevention strategies could reduce fall injuries.

Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Guangzhou Military Command of the PLA, Guangzhou 510507, Guangdong Province, China; Guangdong Arbovirus Diseases Emergency Technology Research Center, Guangzhou, 510507, Guangdong Province, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: Dengue has been a serious public health burden and dengue virus-1 (DENV-1) is the predominant strain in Guangdong province, China. Differences exist in the transmission dynamics amongAedes albopictus and DENV in different geographical regions. However, little is known about the vector competence of indigenous Aedes albopictus for the predominant dengue strain in Guangdong province, China.

Background: The mosquito Aedes albopictus is an important vector for dengue virus (DENV) transmission. The midgut is the first barrier to mosquito infection by DENV, and this barrier is a critical factor affecting the vector competence of the mosquito. However, the molecular mechanism of the interaction between midgut and virus is unknown.

Background: A dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is closely related to the occurrence of depression. The glucocorticoid receptor, also known as the nuclear receptor subfamily 3, group C, member 1 (NR3C1), provides negative feedback to the HPA axis by binding to glucocorticoids. Some studies have demonstrated an association between the NR3C1 rs41423247 polymorphism and depression, but results from other studies have been controversial.

Background: Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) is an indigenous species and the predominant vector of dengue fever in China. Understanding of genetic diversity and structure of the mosquito would facilitate dengue prevention and vector control. Sympatric cryptic species have been identified in the Ae.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) simultaneously exist in polluted food and water in humid and warm areas, and each has been reported to be genotoxic to liver and associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the genotoxic effects of the two biotoxins in combination and potential mechanism remain unknown. We treated the human hepatic cell line HL7702 with AFB1 and MC-LR together at different ratios, examined their genotoxic effects using micronuclei and comet assays, and evaluated the possible mechanism by measuring oxidative stress markers and DNA base excision repair (BER) genes.

Ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for short-range human target detection is widely used to find and locate survivors in some rescue missions after a disaster. The results of the application of bistatic UWB radar for detecting multi-stationary human targets have shown that human targets close to the radar antennas are very often visible, while those farther from radar antennas are detected with less reliability. In this paper, on account of the significant difference of frequency content between the echo signal of the human target and that of noise in the shadowing region, an algorithm based on wavelet entropy is proposed to detect multiple targets.

Non-specific symptoms and low viremia levels make early diagnosis of dengue virus (DENV) infection challenging. This study aimed to i) identify laboratory markers that can be used to predict a DENV-positive diagnosis and ii) perform a molecular characterization of DENVs from the 2014 Guangdong epidemic. This retrospective study analyzed 1,044 patients from the Guangdong epidemic who were clinically suspected cases of dengue.

The detection of the vibration signal from human vocal folds provides essential information for studying human phonation and diagnosing voice disorders. Doppler radar technology has enabled the noncontact measurement of the human-vocal-fold vibration. However, existing systems must be placed in close proximity to the human throat and detailed information may be lost because of the low operating frequency.

Background: The midgut is the first barrier to dengue virus (DENV) infections of mosquitoes and therefore is a major bottleneck for the subsequent development of vector competence. However, the molecular mechanisms responsible for this barrier are unknown.

Results: We constructed three small RNA libraries from the midguts of adult Aedes albopictus females that had been fed on either sugar solution, an uninfected blood meal, or a blood meal infected with DENV-2, and112 conserved microRNAs represented by 173 miRNA sequences were identified, with 34 novel microRNAs predicted by Mireap, RNAfold and Sfold software.

Background: The CYP19A1 enzyme (aromatase) encoded by the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 19A1 gene influences the final step in the biosynthesis of estrogen, which has been associated with Alzheimer disease (AD). It is possible that genetic polymorphisms in CYP19A1 could influence the risk of AD by altering the expression of CYP19A1. The ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, which is the most significant known genetic risk factor for AD, may mask the effects of other loci.

The CYP17A1 gene encodes cytochrome P450c17α, an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of sex hormones, which have been linked to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). An association between the CYP17A1 rs743572 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and AD has been reported; however, the findings are controversial. In the present study, we investigated the association between rs743572 and another SNP, rs3824755, and AD risk in a Chinese Han population (n=207 patients and 239 controls), and their interaction with the apolipoprotein E (APOE) e4 allele.
