Macrophages play a pivotal role in the response to injury, contributing significantly to the repair and regrowth of damaged tissues. The external lateral line system in aquatic organisms offers a practical model for studying regeneration, featuring interneuromast cells connecting sensory neuromasts. Under normal conditions, these cells remain dormant, but their transformation into neuromasts occurs when overcoming inhibitory signals from Schwann cells and posterior lateral line nerves.

Skeletal muscular diseases predominantly affect skeletal and cardiac muscle, resulting in muscle weakness, impaired respiratory function and decreased lifespan. These harmful outcomes lead to poor health-related quality of life and carry a high healthcare economic burden. The absence of promising treatments and new therapies for muscular disorders requires new methods for candidate drug identification and advancement in animal models.

Background: Current voice assessments focus on perceptive evaluation and acoustic analysis. The interaction of vocal tract pressure (P) and vocal fold (VF) vibrations are important for volume and pitch control. However, there are currently little non-invasive ways to measure P.

Vitiligo is a common acquired disease of pigment loss. In lesions recalcitrant to non-invasive treatment, transplantation of cultured autologous melanocytes is an emerging choice. Conventionally, the recipient site is often prepared by laser-mediated or mechanical dermabrasion.

Teleost fishes have evolved a number of sound-producing mechanisms, including vibrations of the swim bladder. In addition to sound production, the swim bladder also aids in sound reception. While the production and reception of sound by the swim bladder has been described separately in fishes, the extent to which it operates for both in a single species is unknown.

In the brain, perivascular fibroblasts (PVFs) reside within the perivascular spaces (PVSs) of arterioles and large venules, however their physiological and pathophysiological roles remain largely unknown. PVFs express numerous extracellular matrix proteins that are found in the basement membrane and PVS surrounding large diameter vessels. PVFs are sandwiched between the mural cell layer and astrocytic endfeet, where they are poised to interact with mural cells, perivascular macrophages, and astrocytes.

Background: The maternal diet is essential to offspring development, but the specific effects on tooth morphology are still unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of altering maternal calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) supplementation during gestation and lactation on offspring dentition.
Methods: Pregnant mice were fed an experimental diet containing a threefold increase in Ca and a threefold decrease in P compared to the standard mouse chow diet at embryonic Day 0.

E-cadherins (Ecads) are a crucial cell-cell adhesion protein with tumor suppression properties. Ecad adhesion can be enhanced by the monoclonal antibody 66E8, which has potential applications in inhibiting cancer metastasis. However, the biophysical mechanisms underlying 66E8-mediated adhesion strengthening are unknown.

In adult mammals, wound healing predominantly follows a fibrotic pathway, culminating in scar formation. However, cutaneous microwounds generated through fractional photothermolysis, a modality that produces a constellation of microthermal zones, exhibit a markedly different healing trajectory. Our study delineates the cellular attributes of these microthermal zones, underscoring a temporally limited, subclinical inflammatory milieu concomitant with rapid re-epithelialization within 24 hours.

Mechanical signaling plays a crucial role in maintaining extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis in various structures. In this study, we investigated the responses of corneal fibroblasts to cyclic stretching loads using an in vitro cell culture system. Bovine corneal fibroblasts were cultured and subjected to equibiaxial cyclic strain of 15% for 72 h at a frequency of 0.

Background: In eukaryotic cells, DNA double strand breaks (DSB) are primarily repaired by canonical non-homologous end joining (c-NHEJ), homologous recombination (HR) and alternative NHEJ (alt-NHEJ). Zinc finger and SCAN domain containing 4 (ZSCAN4), sporadically expressed in 1-5% mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), is known to regulate genome stability by promoting HR.
Results: Here we show that ZSCAN4 promotes DNA repair by acting with Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1), which is a key member of the alt-NHEJ pathway.

Purpose: To generate a single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) map and construct cell-cell communication networks of mouse corneas.
Methods: C57BL/6 mouse corneas were dissociated to single cells and subjected to scRNA-seq. Cell populations were clustered and annotated for bioinformatic analysis using the R package "Seurat.

Perivascular fibroblasts (PVFs) are a fibroblast-like cell type that reside on large-diameter blood vessels in the adult meninges and central nervous system (CNS). PVFs contribute to fibrosis following injury but their homeostatic functions are not defined. PVFs were previously shown to be absent from most brain regions at birth and are only detected postnatally within the cerebral cortex.

The effects of lipid-lowering drugs (LLDs) on cardiovascular and renal outcomes in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and dyslipidemia are not completely understood. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the effect of LLDs on end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), and mortality in adult patients with CKD stage 3b, 4, or 5, and dyslipidemia. Participants were recruited between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2018, and classified as LLD or non-LLD users; the final follow-up date was December 31, 2020.

The placenta performs essential biologic functions for fetal development throughout pregnancy. Placental dysfunction is at the root of multiple adverse birth outcomes such as intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals during pregnancy can cause placental dysfunction, and many prior human studies have examined molecular changes in bulk placental tissues.

Sighs prevent the collapse of alveoli in the lungs, initiate arousal under hypoxic conditions, and are an expression of sadness and relief. Sighs are periodically superimposed on normal breaths, known as eupnea. Implicated in the generation of these rhythmic behaviors is the preBötzinger complex (preBötC).

Cerebrovascular pathologies other than frank infarctions are commonly seen in aged brains. Here, we focus on multi-lumen vascular profiles (MVPs), which are characterized by multiple vessel lumens enclosed in a single vascular channel. Little information exists on the prevalence, risk factors, and co-pathologies of MVPs.

Researchers should be aware that hair growth cycle drives prominent molecular, cellular, and morphological changes to the entire skin. Thus, hair growth constitutes a major experimental variable that influences the interpretation of dermatological studies. Hair growth in mice is neither asynchronous nor fully synchronized; rather, it occurs in waves that dynamically propagate across the skin.

Efficient clearance of dead cells is critical for tissue regeneration after injuries. How dead cells are removed from the skin after radiotherapy and chemotherapy is unclear. In this study, we found that radiotherapeutic and chemotherapeutic damage induced extensive apoptosis of highly proliferative transit-amplifying cells in hair follicles.

Studies have highlighted the significant involvement of kidney pericytes in renal fibrosis. Kidney pericytes, classified as interstitial mesenchymal cells, are extensively branched, collagen-producing cells that closely interact with endothelial cells. This article aims to provide an overview of the recent advancements in understanding the physiological functions of pericytes and their roles in kidney diseases.

Introduction: Cisplatin, a commonly used anticancer compound, exhibits severe off-target organ toxicity. Due to its wide application in cancer treatment, the reduction of its damage to normal tissue is an imminent clinical need. Cisplatin-induced testicular oxidative stress and damage lead to male sub- or infertility.
