This study investigates the degradation of six different types of absorbable surgical threads commonly used in clinical practice, focusing on their response to exposure to physiological fluids. The threads were subjected to hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation in physiological saline, bile, and pancreatic juice. Our findings demonstrate that bile and pancreatic juice, particularly when contaminated with bacterial strains such as , spp.

Wound infection after intestinal ostomy closure is a very common postoperative complication. An alternative to primary wound suturing by single sutures or purse string sutures (PSS) is applying incisional negative pressure wound therapy (iNPWT). The aim of the following systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess and compare clinical outcomes in patients after PSS and iNPWT use.

Genetic studies preceded by the observation of an unknown mosquito species in Mikołów (Poland) confirmed that it belongs to a new invasive species in Polish fauna, (Theobald, 1901), a known vector for numerous infectious diseases. is expanding its geographical presence, raising concerns about potential disease transmission given its vector competence for chikungunya virus, dengue virus, West Nile virus, and Zika virus. This first genetically confirmed identification of in Poland initiates a comprehensive review of the literature on , its biology and ecology, and the viral infections transmitted by this species.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy holds substantial promise for the treatment of tennis elbow, a complex and challenging musculoskeletal condition. The aim of the study was to assess whether there are correlations between the levels of individual morphotic elements determined in whole blood and the outcomes of tennis elbow treatment with PRP injection, as measured using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) such as the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QDASH), and Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE). A prospective analysis was conducted on 107 patients (132 elbows) undergoing lateral epicondylitis treatment with (PRP) injections.

Article Synopsis
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is important in both the development and healing of tendinopathy, with genetic variations affecting how patients respond to treatment.
  • A study analyzed 107 patients with tennis elbow over two years, focusing on how five specific gene polymorphisms influenced the success of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.
  • Results showed that certain genetic variants (GG for rs2010963 and CC for rs3024998) were linked to a better response to PRP treatment, suggesting that genetic testing could help personalize therapy for tendinopathy patients.

Polymorphic Variants of the Gene Influence Efficacy of PRP Therapy in Treating Tennis Elbow: A Prospective Cohort Study.

J Clin Med

October 2022

Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics, School of Health Sciences in Katowice, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Medyków 18 Str., 40-752 Katowice, Poland.

Background: Differences in response to PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy may be linked to the variability of growth factors and their receptor's genes. Considering that, we checked whether the platelet-derived growth factor receptor beta gene () single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affect the effectiveness of PRP therapy in treating tennis elbow patients.

Methods: The treatment efficacy was analyzed over time (2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 52, and 104 weeks after PRP injection) on 107 patients (132 elbows) using PROMs (patient-reported outcome measures), namely VAS (Visual Analog Scale), QDASH (quick version of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) and PRTEE (Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation).

Hemifacial microsomia (HFM) is the second most common congenital disability of the face, with a prevalence of 1 in 3000 to 5600 live births. Although etiology is still not fully understood, including both genetics and environmental factors, the latest reports indicate the prominence of premature loss of the neural crest cells. What is more, a deficit of muscles of mastication, except the masseter, correlates in the pathomechanism of mandibular underdevelopment.
