Effect of hippocampal 6-OHDA lesions on the contextual modulation of taste recognition memory.

Taste recognition memory is evident in rodents because the initial neophobia to novel tastes attenuates across exposures as the taste becomes familiar and safe. This attenuation of taste neophobia (AN) is context-dependent and an auditory background change could induce the recovery of the neophobic response. The AN auditory context-dependency requires the hippocampal integrity but the neurochemical mechanisms underlying the interaction with the taste memory circuit remain unexplored.

Background And Aim: Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) constitute a major public health concern because they can induce a large spectrum of adverse effects by interfering with the hormonal system. Rapid identification of potential EDCs using in vitro screenings is therefore critical, particularly for chemicals of emerging concerns such as replacement flame retardants (FRs). The review aimed at identifying (1) data gaps and research needs regarding endocrine disrupting (ED) properties of replacement FRs and (2) potential EDCs among these emerging chemicals.

Probiotics microorganisms exert their health-associated activities through some of the following general actions: competitive exclusion, enhancement of intestinal barrier function, production of bacteriocins, improvement of altered microbiota, and modulation of the immune response. Among them, CECT5716 has become one of the most promising probiotics and it has been described to possess potential beneficial effects on inflammatory processes and immunological alterations. Different studies, preclinical and clinical trials, have evidenced its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties and elucidated the precise mechanisms of action involved in its beneficial effects.

A number of human biomonitoring (HBM) studies have presented data on exposure to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and cadmium (Cd), but comparatively few include results on effect biomarkers. Obesity is one of the main features of metabolic syndrome, where a low-grade chronic inflammation and gut dysbiosis contribute to the development of the related metabolic dysfunctions. Humans are simultaneously exposed to complex mixtures of chemicals with limited knowledge on potential health effects, therefore improved tools for assessing these mixtures are needed. As part of the Human Biomonitoring for Europe (HBM4EU) Project, we aimed to examine the combined biological activity of chemical mixtures extracted from human placentas using one in vivo and four in vitro bioassays, also known as biomarkers of combined effect. Relevant endocrine activities (proliferative and/or reporter gene assays) and four endpoints were tested: the estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR), and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activities, as well as thyroid hormone (TH) signaling.

The attenuation of taste neophobia (AN) is a good model for studying the structural and neurochemical mechanisms of the emotional component of memory because taste recognition memory exhibits the unique feature of being necessarily linked to hedonic properties. Whilst novel tastes elicit cautious neophobic responses, taste exposures which are not followed by aversive consequences attenuate neophobia as the taste becomes safe and palatable. Given the involvement of the nucleus accumbens in reward and of the amygdala in emotional memories, we applied c-Fos immunohistochemistry as an index of neural activity in Wistar rats that were exposed to a vinegar solution for one, two or six days.

There are numerous studies indicating a direct association between hypertension and gut microbiota in both animal models and humans. In this review, we focused on the imbalance in the gut microbiota composition relative to healthy state or homeostasis, termed dysbiosis, associated with hypertension and discuss the current knowledge regarding how microbiota regulates blood pressure (BP), involving the sympathetic nervous system and the immune system. Concerns about the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on human brain and behavior are not novel; however, Grohs and colleagues have contributed groundbreaking data on this topic in a recent issue of Environmental Health. For the first time, associations were reported between prenatal BPA exposure and differences in children's brain microstructure, which appeared to mediate the association between this exposure and children's behavioral symptoms. Findings in numerous previous mother-child cohorts have pointed in a similar worrying direction, linking higher BPA exposure during pregnancy to more behavioral problems throughout childhood as assessed by neuropsychological questionnaires.

Prefrontal cortex activity patterns during taste neophobia habituation in adult and aged rats.

Age-related memory decline has been associated with changes in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) function. In order to explore the role of mPFC in taste recognition memory, we have assessed mPFC c-Fos immunoreactivity in adult (5-month-old) and aged (24-month-old) male Wistar rats during the first (Novel), second (Familiar I), and sixth (Familiar II) exposure to a cider vinegar solution. Adult brains showed higher c-Fos expression in the ventral but not the dorsal region of mPFC during the second taste exposure.

Taste recognition memory in rodents is evident as taste neophobia disappears upon repeated taste exposures without aversive consequences, thus increasing the consumption of familiar edibles. The attenuation of taste neophobia (AN) induced by taste familiarity is auditory context-dependent in mice since neophobia to a familiar taste reappears with a novel auditory background. This effect depends on the integrity of the dorsal hippocampus but the potential role of dopamine has remained unexplored.
