Both lanthanide-containing and fluorine-containing nanomaterials present challenging targets for microbial biosynthesis because these elements are toxic to most bacteria. Here, we overcome these challenges by using an Antarctic Shewanella baltica strain that tolerates these elements and report the first biosynthesis of lanthanide-doped fluoride nanoparticles (NPs) from them. NaYF NPs doped with Er/Yb are prototypical lanthanide-based upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) with upconverted luminescence at visible wavelengths under infrared excitation.

Two Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains, EXRC-4A-4 and RC-2-3, were isolated from soil samples collected at Union Glacier, Antarctica. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain EXRC-4A-4 was identified as belonging to the genus , and strain RC-2-3 to the genus . Further genomic analyses, including average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization, suggested that these strains represent new species.

Neurotransmission is critical for brain function, allowing neurons to communicate through neurotransmitters and neuropeptides. RVD-hemopressin (RVD-Hp), a novel peptide identified in noradrenergic neurons, modulates cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. Unlike hemopressin (Hp), which induces anxiogenic behaviors via transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) activation, RVD-Hp counteracts these effects, suggesting that it may block TRPV1.

Background: Rare-earth sulfide nanoparticles (NPs) could harness the optical and magnetic features of rare-earth ions for applications in nanotechnology. However, reports of their synthesis are scarce and typically require high temperatures and long synthesis times.
Results: Here we present a biosynthesis of terbium sulfide (TbS) NPs using microorganisms, identifying conditions that allow Escherichia coli to extracellularly produce TbS NPs in aqueous media at 37 °C by controlling cellular sulfur metabolism to produce a high concentration of sulfide ions.

This work presents the use of photoactive molecularly imprinted nanoparticles (MINs) to promote antibiotic degradation under visible light irradiation. Prototype MINs for the model antibiotic tetracycline (TC) were developed using molecular dynamics simulations to predict the TC-binding capacity of seven pre-polymerization mixtures. The studied formulations contained varying proportions of functional monomers with diverse physicochemical profiles, namely -isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), --butylacrylamide (TBAM), acrylic acid (AA), and (-(3-aminopropyl)methacrylamide hydrochloride) (APMA) and a constant ratio of the cross-linker ,'-methylene-bis-acrylamide (BIS).

Two motile, rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative bacterial strains, TNT11 and TNT19, were isolated from soil samples collected at Deception Island, Antarctica. According to the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, both strains belong to the genus Pseudomonas. Further genomic analyses based on ANI and dDDH suggested that these strains were new species.

A Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive, non-motile bacteria, with a rod-coccus cycle (designated as EH-1B-1) was isolated from a soil sample from Union Glacier in Ellsworth Mountains, Antarctica. Strain EH-1B-1 had an optimal growth temperature of 28 °C and grew at pH 7-10. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C, iso-C, C and anteiso-C.

A one-pot green method for aqueous synthesis of fluorescent copper sulphide nanoparticles (NPs) was developed. The reaction was carried out in borax-citrate buffer at physiological pH, 37 °C, aerobic conditions and using Cu (II) and the biological thiol cysteine. NPs exhibit green fluorescence with a peak at 520 nm when excited at 410 nm and an absorbance peak at 410 nm.

The rapid emergence and spread of new variants of coronavirus type 2, as well as the emergence of zoonotic viruses, highlights the need for methodologies that contribute to the search for new pharmacological treatments. In the present work, we searched for new SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease inhibitors in the PubChem database, which has more than 100 million compounds. Based on the ligand efficacy index obtained by molecular docking, 500 compounds with higher affinity than another experimentally tested inhibitor were selected.

In this work, we describe the photoisomerization of facial rhenium(i) tricarbonyl complexes bearing P,N-bidentate pyridyl/phosphine ligands with different chelating rings and anions: RePNBr, RePNTfO, and RePNNBr, which are triggered under irradiation at 365 nm in solutions. The apparent photodegradation rate constants ( ) depend on the coordinating ability of the solvent, being lowest in acetonitrile. The value increases as the temperature rises, suggesting a reactive IL excited state thermally populated from the MLCT excited state involved.

Non-cell-autonomous mechanisms contribute to neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), in which astrocytes release unidentified factors that are toxic to motoneurons (MNs). We report here that mouse and patient iPSC-derived astrocytes with diverse ALS/FTD-linked mutations (SOD1, TARDBP, and C9ORF72) display elevated levels of intracellular inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), a ubiquitous, negatively charged biopolymer. PolyP levels are also increased in astrocyte-conditioned media (ACM) from ALS/FTD astrocytes.

Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) is widely employed to assess antimicrobial affinity for lipopolysaccharide (LPS); nevertheless, experiments are usually limited to commercially available-LPS chemotypes. Herein we show a method that uses Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to characterize homogeneity artificial vesicles of LPS (LPS-V) extracted from isogenic mutant bacterial strains before analyzing the antimicrobial binding by ITC. This method allows us to characterize the differences in the Polymyxin-B binding and gel to crystalline liquid (β↔α) phase profiles of LPS-V made of LPS extracted from isogenic mutant strains for the LPS biosynthesis pathway, allowing us to obtain the comparable data required for new antimicrobial discovery.
