Carbapenemase-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CP-CRE) represent a significant global threat. The emergence of dual CP-CRE is particularly alarming, as they can potentially compromise the efficacy of newer antibiotics, further decreasing therapeutic alternatives. Herein, we report the emergence of multiple species of CP-CRE recovered from invasive infections in Chile that simultaneously harbor and and provide an in-depth genomic characterization of these worrisome pathogens.

In-depth comparative genomic analysis was conducted to predict carbon, nitrogen, and phosphate assimilation pathways in the halotolerant, acidophilic genus Acidihalobacter. The study primarily aimed to understand how the metabolic capabilities of each species can determine their roles and effects on the microbial ecology of their unique saline and acidic environments, as well as in their potential application to saline water bioleaching systems. All four genomes encoded the genes for the complete tricarboxylic acid cycle, including 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase, a key enzyme absent in obligate chemolithotrophic acidophiles.

The role of astrocytes in depression, its prevention, and treatment by targeting astroglial gliotransmitter release.

The role of ventral hippocampus (vHipp) astroglial gliotransmission in depression was studied using chronic restraint stress (CRS) and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rodent models. CRS increased Cx43 hemichannel activity and extracellular glutamate levels in the vHipp and blocking astroglial Cx43 hemichannel-dependent gliotransmission during CRS prevented the development of depression and glutamate buildup. Moreover, the acute blockade of Cx43 hemichannels induced antidepressant effects in rats previously subjected to CRS or CUMS.

Both lanthanide-containing and fluorine-containing nanomaterials present challenging targets for microbial biosynthesis because these elements are toxic to most bacteria. Here, we overcome these challenges by using an Antarctic Shewanella baltica strain that tolerates these elements and report the first biosynthesis of lanthanide-doped fluoride nanoparticles (NPs) from them. NaYF NPs doped with Er/Yb are prototypical lanthanide-based upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) with upconverted luminescence at visible wavelengths under infrared excitation.

Two Gram-stain-positive bacterial strains, EXRC-4A-4 and RC-2-3, were isolated from soil samples collected at Union Glacier, Antarctica. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain EXRC-4A-4 was identified as belonging to the genus , and strain RC-2-3 to the genus . Further genomic analyses, including average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization, suggested that these strains represent new species.

Neurotransmission is critical for brain function, allowing neurons to communicate through neurotransmitters and neuropeptides. RVD-hemopressin (RVD-Hp), a novel peptide identified in noradrenergic neurons, modulates cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. Unlike hemopressin (Hp), which induces anxiogenic behaviors via transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) activation, RVD-Hp counteracts these effects, suggesting that it may block TRPV1.

Background: Rare-earth sulfide nanoparticles (NPs) could harness the optical and magnetic features of rare-earth ions for applications in nanotechnology. However, reports of their synthesis are scarce and typically require high temperatures and long synthesis times.

Results: Here we present a biosynthesis of terbium sulfide (TbS) NPs using microorganisms, identifying conditions that allow Escherichia coli to extracellularly produce TbS NPs in aqueous media at 37 °C by controlling cellular sulfur metabolism to produce a high concentration of sulfide ions.
