Military combat can result in the need for comprehensive care related to both physical and psychological trauma, most commonly chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These conditions tend to co-occur and result in high levels of distress and interference in everyday life. Thus, it is imperative to develop effective, time-efficient treatments for these conditions before they become chronic and resistant to change.

Strengths use, the engagement of positive character traits in everyday contexts, is associated with both positive functioning and symptom reduction. The present study examined longitudinal relationships between strengths use and emotional disorder symptoms (anxiety, stress, and depression) during a randomized clinical trial of the Digital Unified Protocol, a transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral therapy. Participants (N = 120) completed assessments at four major time points during treatment and at 3-month follow-up.

Before the development of the Unified Protocol for the Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP), evidence-based treatment options for commonly co-occurring anxiety, mood, and related disorders consisted of numerous single-disorder protocols that shared many similarities, reflecting the overlap among these disorders themselves. The UP distilled common elements of cognitive behavioral protocols into a unified intervention directly targeting core temperamental features underlying these disorders of emotion, namely neuroticism and associated emotion dysregulation. The UP has since become a leading "transdiagnostic" treatment for emotional disorders, which is now available in several formats (e.

There is preliminary evidence that the anticonvulsant medication Zonisamide (ZON) may be an effective, well-tolerated treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, further evaluation of its efficacy for treating patients with AUD is needed, and much remains unknown about ZON's therapeutic mechanisms. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of ZON in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial.

Despite advances in prevention and treatment, the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus remains a significant problem in the United States, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). Alcohol use can promote risky sexual decisions, and alcohol expectancies may influence the role of alcohol in decision making. The present secondary analysis tests the moderating role of sexual alcohol expectancies (SAEs) in the relation between daily alcohol intoxication and sexual behavior in a sample of 248 moderate- to heavy-drinking MSM.

The factor structure, reliability, and concurrent validity of the Distress Tolerance Scale were evaluated in a large outpatient sample ( = 775). Prior research demonstrates mixed findings regarding the most appropriate factor structure, finding evidence for the presence of four subfactors as well as a potential second-order (hierarchical) General Distress Tolerance factor. Competing factor structures were compared using confirmatory factor analyses.

Guided Self-Change (GSC) is a Motivational Interviewing (MI)-based early intervention program, infused with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), for individuals with substance use problems. In this study, we implemented a 4-session GSC program with the innovative addition of mindfulness-based techniques at a minority-serving institution to reduce substance use and negative consequences among self-referred university students. We investigated processes that may be associated with behavior change, including perceived risk of use and self-efficacy ratings among university students who reported their primary substance of choice was cannabis ( = 18) or alcohol ( = 18).

In the aftermath of discrete disasters, how families discuss the event has been linked with child well-being. There is less understanding, however, of how family communication affects adjustment to a protracted and ongoing public health crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The present research leveraged a large longitudinal sample of families (N = 1884) across the United States and Canada to investigate factors that predicted family communication styles (active versus avoidant communication) about the COVID-19 pandemic and examined the longitudinal sequelae of mental health outcomes for youth associated with different family communication styles.

Technology-enabled services (TESs) are clinical interventions that combine technological and human components to provide health services. TESs for mental health are efficacious in the treatment of anxiety and depression and are currently being offered as frontline treatments around the world. It is hoped that these interventions will be able to reach diverse populations across a range of identities and ultimately decrease disparities in mental health treatment.

The present study expands on the growing body of research on the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on positive affect. More specifically, we explore how CBT may promote increases in the Joviality subscale of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-Expanded Form (PANAS-X), a measure of self-rated affect that captures positive emotions, including joy and excitement, and how change in joviality may be associated with concurrent symptom change. We utilized data from a randomized equivalence trial comparing the efficacy of the unified protocol (UP) for transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders, a transdiagnostic CBT, against various well-established single disorder protocols (SDP) and waitlist control.

Importance: A transdiagnostic treatment, the Unified Protocol, is as effective as single diagnostic protocols in comorbid emotional disorders in clinical populations. However, its effects on posttraumatic stress disorder and other emotional disorders in individuals living in war and armed conflict contexts have not been studied.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of a cultural and contextual adaptation of the Unified Protocol (CXA-UP) on posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression compared to waitlist control in individuals exposed to armed conflict in Colombia.

Purpose: The present study examined the prospective direct and interactive effects of personality (neuroticism, extraversion) and experiencing changes in friendships during the pandemic on symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Methods: A sample of patients ( = 77) at an outpatient treatment clinic who had received a diagnostic assessment in the 6 months prior to the COVID-19 lockdown was re-contacted during the pandemic (May-June 2020) and completed a survey assessing stressors and symptoms of internalizing psychopathology.
Results: Neuroticism had main effects on anxiety, whereas experiencing changes in friendships had main effects on stress and depression.
A growing literature is devoted to understanding and predicting heterogeneity in response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including using supervised machine learning to develop prognostic models that could be used to inform treatment planning. The current study developed CBT prognostic models using data from a broad dimensionally oriented pretreatment assessment (324 predictors) of 1,210 outpatients with internalizing psychopathology. Super learning was implemented to develop prognostic indices for three outcomes assessed at 12-month follow-up: principal diagnosis improvement (attained by 65.

Background: The 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic led to elevated levels of psychological distress on a global scale. Given that individuals with pre-existing physical conditions are at risk for worse COVID-19 outcomes, those dealing with the stress of physical health problems (including knowing someone with health problems) may experience more severe distress during the pandemic.
Methods: Patients with emotional disorders who completed a diagnostic assessment in the 6 months prior to COVID-19 were surveyed in May-June 2020 on their emotional reactions to COVID-19 (N = 77).

Organisms learn from prediction errors (PEs) to predict the future. Laboratory studies using small financial outcomes find that humans use PEs to update expectations and link individual differences in PE-based learning to internalizing disorders. Because of the low-stakes outcomes in most tasks, it is unclear whether PE learning emerges in naturalistic, high-stakes contexts and whether individual differences in PE learning predict psychopathology risk.
