Background: To restore elbow flexor muscle function in case of traumatic brachial plexus avulsion, the phrenic nerve transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve has become part of clinical practice. The nerve transfer can be done by means of video-assisted thoracic surgery without nerve graft or via supraclavicular approach in combination with an autograft. This study focuses on a detailed microscopic and macroscopic examination of the phrenic nerve.

Plectin, a highly versatile and multifunctional cytolinker, has been implicated in several multisystemic disorders. Most sequence variations in the human plectin gene (PLEC) cause epidermolysis bullosa simplex with muscular dystrophy (EBS-MD), an autosomal recessive skin-blistering disorder associated with progressive muscle weakness. In this study, we performed a comprehensive cell biological analysis of dermal fibroblasts from three different patients with EBS-MD, where PLEC expression analyses revealed preserved mRNA levels in all cases, whereas full-length plectin protein content was significantly reduced or completely absent.

Objectives: To show the development of ganglionic eminence, basal ganglia and thalamus/hypothalamus in week 11 + 3 to 13 + 6 by transvaginal 3D ultrasound.

Methods: To visualize the prosencephalic structures surrounding the 3rd ventricle, 285 three-dimensional ultrasound volume blocks from 402 fetuses examined were selected in a prospective transvaginal 3D study to compare ultrasound images of ganglionic eminence, basal ganglia, thalamus/hypothalamus with embryological sections. In addition, measurements of the described structures were made in 104 fetuses to quantify the embryological development.

Using anatomy textbooks written at the University of Vienna, our article aims at investigating the influence of censorship laws on the anatomy textbooks in Vienna between 1786 and 1865.

Owing to the reevaluation of formaldehyde limits by the European Commission, a joint approach was chosen by the German-speaking anatomies in Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) to find commonalities among embalming protocols and infrastructure. The choroid is the richly vascular layer of the eye located between the sclera and Bruch's membrane. Early studies in animals, as well as more recent studies in humans, have demonstrated that the choroid is a dynamic, multifunctional structure, with its thickness directly and indirectly subject to modulation by a variety of physiologic and visual stimuli. In this review, the anatomy and function of the choroid are summarized and links between the choroid, eye growth regulation, and myopia, as demonstrated in animal models, discussed.

Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) may aggravate critical illness. Although angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition has beneficial effects in ventilator-induced lung injury, its clinical application is impeded by concomitant hypotension. We hypothesized that the aminopeptidase inhibitor ALT-00 may oppose the hypotension induced by an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, and that this combination would activate the alternative renin-angiotensin system (RAS) axis to counteract ventilator-induced lung injury.
