Nephron-sparing surgery was initially limited to the patients with localized renal cancer (RCC) present bilaterally or in a solitary kidney. Recently there is controversy in the indication for partial nephrectomy or enucleation to incidentally defined small RCC with normal opposite kidney. We examined the incidence of multicentricity in 43 kidneys removed for RCC with a diameter of less than 80 mm.

Recently, a variety of new prognostic factors for breast cancer have been advocated, although most of these studies are still preliminary. Until the results of definitive studies to evaluate the clinical usefulness of these new factors are obtained, it is practically relevant to plan a treatment schedule of breast cancer patients through classical prognostic factors such as tumor size, axillary lymph node status, histological grade, and estrogen/progesterone receptor status.

A 66-year-old man with an extremely rare neoplasm of the lung, adenomyoepithelioma, is described. The tumor was a well-circumscribed lesion that showed solid, glandular, and papillary growth patterns and was composed of two types of cells, inner epithelial cells and outer myoepithelial cells. This bidirectional differentiation was confirmed immunohistochemically.

Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of bridging collateral vessels on the success of coronary angioplasty of chronic total occlusions in the context of state of the art technology and operator skill.
Background: Coronary angioplasty of chronic total occlusions has been associated with relatively low success rates. Because the presence of bridging collateral vessels in chronic total occlusion has been reported to be the major predictive factor in procedural failure, angioplasty is often not recommended in patients with such vessels.

Ovariectomy at 1 month of age promotes development of hepatocellular adenomatous nodules in female C57BL/6 x DS-F1 mice treated neonatally with 3'-methyl-4-dimethylaminoazobenzene (3'-Me-DAB). Implantation of oestradiol-17 beta (E2) pellets at 1 month of age suppresses nodule development. Since E2 increases serum levels of prolactin, high serum levels of prolactin in mice that have received implants of E2 pellets may play a role in the suppression of hepatocellular tumorigenesis.

The effects of the neuropeptide galanin on the development of colon tumors induced by azoxymethane (AOM) and on the labeling index of colon epithelial cells were investigated in Wistar rats. Treatment with galanin significantly decreased the incidence of colon tumors at week 45. Galanin did not influence the histological appearance of the colon tumors, but it slightly increased the frequency of sub-mucosal adenocarcinomas.

Background/aims: Ultrasonography should be used for screening of hepatocellular carcinoma, but there are few reports on the relationship between liver ultrasonographic findings and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Using prospective follow-up studies, we examined the role of liver with a hypoechoic nodular pattern as a high-risk factor in HCC.
Methods: The study was performed by follow-up on 593 patients with chronic liver disease recorded at our hospital.

Abnormalities of the p53 oncogene in lung cancer have recently been reported to be more frequent in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) than in non-small cell lung cancer (non-SCLC), but their status in combined type SCLC is as yet unknown. In this study, immunohistochemical analysis using a polyclonal antibody against p53 protein was performed in 12 surgically resected specimens of combined type SCLC. Immunoreactivity of the p53 protein was found in 5 (42%) of the 12 cases, and the immunostaining pattern of the p53 protein in areas of the non-small cell carcinoma type was the same as in those of the small cell carcinoma type.

The results of recent preclinical and clinical studies suggest that AO-90, a methionine-free intravenous amino acid solution (7.43%), potentiates the antitumor effect of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). In the present multi-center, randomized, controlled study conducted at the internal medicine departments of 24 institutions between July 1991 and May 1993, patients with advanced gastric cancer were randomly allocated to receive either AO-90 (500-750 mL/day, AO/MF group) or Amiparen, a commercial intravenous amino acid solution (600-800 mL/day, C/MF group) by total parenteral nutrition for 14 days.

Normal human sera contained 10-60 ng/ml of soluble membrane cofactor protein (MCP, CD46) whereas sera of > 50% of the cancer patients contained > 60 ng/ml. MCP purified by immunoaffinity chromatography from both normal and cancer patients' sera consisted of three bands of 56, 47 and 29 kDa on SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting. The upper two components were increased in cancer patient sera.

Human membrane cofactor protein (MCP, CD46) functions as an inhibitor of the complement (C) cascade to protect host cells from C attack, and as a receptor for measles virus (MV). Normal human sera contains 10-60 ng/ml of naturally produced soluble forms of MCP, which is also a cofactor for the factor I-mediated inactivation of C3b. We produced monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against MCP and a recombinant soluble form of MCP similar to the natural soluble forms, and tested their ability to block MV infection.

Human factor H in the complement (C) system has been characterized as a decay-accelerator for the alternative C pathway C3 convertase and a cofactor for factor I-mediated inactivation of C3b. The current concept is that it does not serve as a C4b-inactivating cofactor. In the present study, we demonstrated that in fluid-phase, factor H and Factor I can cleave methylamine-treated C4(C4ma), a C4b analogue, to C4d, regardless of its isotype.

In order to clarify important factors in prognosis of patients with gastric cancer, 3,515 surgically treated cases were investigated. The survival rate varied widely depending on the curativity which strongly correlated with the stage of the disease. For example, such cases with peritoneal dissemination and hepatic metastasis have a poor prognosis.
