Background: Despite improved survival, one in five patients with heart failure (HF) is readmitted within 30 days of discharge. Assessing fluid status is challenging, with an estimated 50% accuracy when relying on physical examination alone. Pulmonary congestion is a risk factor for readmission and can manifest weeks before symptoms occur.

Management and prevention of acute decompensated heart failure remain highly prevalent and challenging medical conditions. Incorporation of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) as an adjunctive tool for assessing volume status and treatment response has shown significant promise. POCUS can be used for imaging internal anatomic structures serially and capturing these images for comparison and measurement over time.

Background: Survival estimation for patients with symptomatic skeletal metastases ideally should be made before a type of local treatment has already been determined. Currently available survival prediction tools, however, were generated using data from patients treated either operatively or with local radiation alone, raising concerns about whether they would generalize well to all patients presenting for assessment. The Skeletal Oncology Research Group machine-learning algorithm (SORG-MLA), trained with institution-based data of surgically treated patients, and the Metastases location, Elderly, Tumor primary, Sex, Sickness/comorbidity, and Site of radiotherapy model (METSSS), trained with registry-based data of patients treated with radiotherapy alone, are two of the most recently developed survival prediction models, but they have not been tested on patients whose local treatment strategy is not yet decided.

Background: Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) use remains uncommon in advanced heart failure (HF) patients not dependent on inotropes.
Objectives: Before considering a randomized trial comparing a strategy of earlier use of LVAD to continued medical therapy, a better understanding is needed of the clinical trajectory of ambulatory patients with advanced systolic HF on optimal guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT).
Methods: REVIVAL enrolled 400 patients with advanced ambulatory systolic HF, ≥1 HF mortality risk marker (≥2 HF hospitalizations past year; or HF hospitalization and high natriuretic peptide; or no HF hospitalizations but low peak oxygen consumption, 6-minute walk, serum sodium, HF survival score or Seattle HF model predicted survival), and no LVAD contraindication at 21 LVAD centers from July 2015 to June 2016.

Key Clinical Message: Arterial rupture is one of the rare but known and devastating complications of the angiogram, which can ultimately lead to loss of limb and life. Therefore, it is recommended that this complication be included in the consent form and that the operator and the logistics team be prepared for this scenario. Moreover, categorizing the patients based on risk factors to be more cautious during the procedure for high-risk patients can be considered a reasonable strategy.

Background: Cardiac point of care ultrasound (POCUS) has shown increasing utility as a tool for diagnosing and managing heart failure (HF). Within cardiology, intravascular volume assessment leveraging visualization of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is a central aspect of care, as IVC size correlates with central venous pressure. This targeted literature review aimed to examine the existing literature assessing the use of POCUS in diagnosis and management of HF patients utilizing POCUS-based IVC measurement either alone or in combination with secondary methods.

Converging evidence implicates disrupted brain connectivity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, the mechanisms linking altered connectivity early in development to the emergence of ASD symptomatology remain poorly understood. Here we examined whether atypicalities in the Salience Network - an early-emerging neural network involved in orienting attention to the most salient aspects of one's internal and external environment - may predict the development of ASD symptoms such as reduced social attention and atypical sensory processing. Six-week-old infants at high likelihood of developing ASD based on family history exhibited stronger Salience Network connectivity with sensorimotor regions; infants at typical likelihood of developing ASD demonstrated stronger Salience Network connectivity with prefrontal regions involved in social attention.

Purpose: Dysregulation of viral-like repeat RNAs are a common feature across many malignancies that are linked with immunological response, but the characterization of these in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is understudied. In this study, we performed RNA hybridization (RNA-ISH) of different repeat RNAs, immunohistochemistry (IHC) for immune cell subpopulations, and spatial transcriptomics to understand the relationship of HCC repeat expression, immune response, and clinical outcomes.
Experimental Design: RNA-ISH for LINE1, HERV-K, HERV-H, and HSATII repeats and IHC for T-cell, Treg, B-cell, macrophage, and immune checkpoint markers were performed on 43 resected HCC specimens.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a well-known oncovirus whose causal link in the occurrence and development of several cancers, such as cervical cancer (CC), has been well established. Indeed, numerous researches depicted the etiological role of HPV in CC pathogenesis in such a way as to develop efficient strategies, including early diagnoses and HPV vaccination, to mitigate HPV infection and CC occurrence. Despite the effectiveness of these strategies in preventing HPV infection, its persistence, and the progression to precancerous lesions and cancers, extensive work that could give a better understanding of other unknown factors favoring oncogenesis is much more needed.
