The increasing numbers of cancer cases worldwide and the exceedingly high mortality rates of some tumor subtypes raise the question about if the current protocols for cancer management are effective and what has been done to improve upon oncologic patients' prognoses. The traditional chemo-immunotherapy options for cancer treatment focus on the use of cytotoxic agents that are able to overcome neoplastic clones' survival mechanisms and induce apoptosis, as well as on the ability to capacitate the host's immune system to hinder the continuous growth of malignant cells. The need to avert the highly toxic profiles of conventional chemo-immunotherapy and to overcome the emerging cases of tumor multidrug resistance has fueled a growing interest in the field of precision medicine and targeted molecular therapies in the last couple of decades, although relatively new alternatives in oncologic practices, the increased specificity, and the positive clinical outcomes achieved through targeted molecular therapies have already consolidated them as promising prospects for the future of cancer management.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that has been increasing drastically around the worldwide. It is important to emphasize that although many drugs are commercially available to treat diabetes, many of them have shown a number of adverse effects. Therefore, search for new antidiabetic agents is of great interest, and natural products, especially those obtained from plants sources, may be an alternative to available drugs.

Cell lines are valuable tools to safeguard genetic material from species threatened with extinction that is mainly due to human action. In this scenario, the puma constitutes a species whose population is being rapidly reduced in the ecosystems it inhabits. For the first time, we characterized puma skin-derived cell lines and assessed these cells after extended culture (experiment 1) and cryopreservation (experiment 2).

The congenital Zika syndrome is a new entity of a group of etiologies that can lead to microcephaly and other brain damages during pregnancy, such as toxoplasmosis, rubeola, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex. The Zika virus crosses the placental barrier and, predominantly, affects neuronal progenitor cells. This disruptive process results in severe cortical developmental disorder, calcifications, cortical and subcortical atrophies, and malformations of the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord.

6-nitrodopamine (6-ND) is released from human umbilical cord vessels and modulates vascular reactivity by acting as a dopamine antagonist. Here we investigate whether 6-ND is released by the rat isolated vas deferens and its effect on this tissue. Dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline and 6-ND levels were quantified in rat isolated vas deferens by LC-MS-MS.

Somatic resource banks play a crucial role in the conservation of genetic diversity, allowing for the preservation of biological samples from different populations. Puma somatic cells can be recovered from these banks and used in assisted techniques toward enhancing their multiplication and conservation. In response to the population reduction of this ecologically importance species, we aimed to evaluate the capacity of cryopreservation of somatic tissues on the maintenance of the integrity and quality of the cells recovered after culture, with the aim of establishing a somatic tissue bank that will allow for the safeguarding of a wide genetic sampling of pumas.

Ovine ovarian fragments (3 × 3 × 1 mm) were fixed in neutral buffered formalin (NBF), Carnoy's solution (CAR), Davidson's solution (DAV), or paraformaldehyde (PFA) for 12 h or 24 h. After this fixation time, each fragment was prepared for histological analysis. Although fixative and fixation period did not affect follicular and stromal cells density, the percentages of morphologically normal primordial and primary follicles was affected by the fixative type and period of fixation.

Biological resource banks represent valuable tools for the conservation of species vulnerable to extinction, such as the jaguar. Cryobanks of skins have the potential to safeguard rare genotypes, allowing the potential exploitation of biological samples in animal multiplication technologies and the study of genetic variability. Determination of the most suitable skin regions for tissue conservation can help increase the efficiency of cryobanks and the storage of biological samples.
