Globally, an estimated 1 billion people reside in endemic areas, and over 12 million individuals are infected with leishmaniasis. Despite its prevalence, leishmaniasis continues to be a neglected disease, mainly affecting underdeveloped countries. In Brazil, the available treatments are pentavalent antimonials and Amphotericin B, which are outdated, toxic, require prolonged parenteral administration and have limited efficacy.

Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA), a precursor of creatine, has a recognized effect on ruminant performance when used as a dietary supplement. However, its impact on reproductive response remains to be elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to contribute initially to this area by supplementing the diets of ewes with a high dose of GAA, evaluating its effects on reproductive response.

We investigated whether microalgae or linseed supply during the early postpartum period affects ovarian restimulation and supports the first postpartum ovulation in lactating anovulatory goats. Thirty-eight An-glo-Nubian-crossbred adult goats were allocated into three groups, one with a control diet ( = 12), fed a total mixed ration (TMR) comprising chopped elephant grass and concentrate; an algal diet ( = 13), fed TMR + green microalgae (1% dry matter); and a linseed diet ( = 13), TMR + linseed (12% dry matter). Supplements were furnished from the second to fifth week (time of weaning).

Nanoemulsions (NEs) possess properties that enhance the solubility, bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of drugs. Chalcones are compounds known for their antifungal properties. In this study, we evaluated different emulsification techniques to create alginate nanoemulsions containing chalcone (1E,4E)-1,5-bis (4-methoxyphenyl) penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DB4OCH).

Background: Diabetic foot ulcers are challenging to heal, increase the risk of lower extremity amputation, and place a significant burden on patients, families, and healthcare systems. Prioritizing preventive interventions holds the promise of reducing patient suffering, lowering costs, and improving quality of life. This study describes a scoping review protocol that will be used to delineate the preventive interventions for diabetic foot ulcers employed in different healthcare settings.

Pathogenic SOX11 variants have been associated with intellectual developmental disorder with microcephaly, and with or without ocular malformations or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) (IDDMOH, OMIM # 615866). In this article, we report seven new patients with de novo SOX11 variants. Five of the variants are missense, one nonsense, and one whole-gene deletion, most of them are novel variants.

This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of thigh muscle assessed by CT images to predict overall mortality in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). This was a multicenter cohort study including adults (≥ 18 years old) newly diagnosed with CRC, who performed a diagnostic computed tomography (CT) exam including thigh regions. CT images were analyzed to evaluate skeletal muscle (SM in cm), skeletal muscle index (SMI in cm/m), and skeletal muscle density (SMD in HU).

Canine mammary tumours (CMT) have histological, clinicopathological and molecular resemblances to human breast cancer (HBC), positioning them as viable models for studying the human disease. CMT initiation and progression occur spontaneously in immune-competent animals, which challenge the suggested limitations of genetically modified mice, also enabling the evaluation of immunotherapies in canine patients. Dogs have shorter life expectancy compared to humans, and cancer advances more rapidly in this species.

A group of children with clinical suspicion of dengue were assessed to determine if there was an overestimation of dengue compared with that of leptospirosis and leishmaniasis. This descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study, based on the active search of participants with acute febrile illness, was conducted at two pediatric hospitals. The collection of clinical and epidemiological data was performed using questionnaires, and laboratory tests specific for dengue were performed using immunochromatographic, serological, and molecular methods.

School-based interventions are needed due to the low levels of physical activity (PA) in adolescents. The aim is to examine the mediation effects of psychosocial factors (attitude, self-efficacy, social support from parents, friends, general teachers, and PE teachers, and environment school perception) and moderation by sex, school grade, and socioeconomic level of a school-based PA intervention on the PA practice among adolescents. The Programme is a randomised controlled trial at schools in southern Brazil ( = 921 adolescents).

Background: The incidence of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is on the rise. Since there is no curative treatment, it is urgent to look for therapies that can delay disease progression and protect pancreatic β-cells. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4i) have shown potential in modulating inflammation and preventing β-cell destruction.

Detection of t(9;22), and consequent fusion, is still a marker of worse prognosis for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), with resistance to tyrosine-kinase inhibitor therapy being a major obstacle in the clinical practice for this subset of patients. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of targeting poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) in a model of p190+ ALL, the most common isoform to afflict ALL patients, and demonstrated the use of experimental PARP inhibitor (PARPi), AZD2461, as a therapeutic option with cytotoxic capabilities similar to that of imatinib, the current gold standard in medical care. We characterized cytostatic profiles, induced cell death, and biomarker expression modulation utilizing cell models, also providing a comprehensive genome-wide analysis through an aCGH of the model used, and further validated PARP1 differential expression in samples of ALL p190+ patients from local healthcare institutions, as well as in larger cohorts of online and readily available datasets.

Background: Chagas disease kills around 10,000 people yearly, primarily in Latin America, where it is prevalent. Current treatment has limited chronic effectiveness, is unsafe, and has substantial side effects. As a result, the use of oxadiazole derivatives and similar heterocyclic compounds as bioisosteres are well known, and they are prospective candidates in the hunt for novel anti- chemicals.
