Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) technique is an effective analytical technique in which fingerprint information about analytes can be obtained, can provide detection limit performance at the single molecule level, and analyzes are performed in a single step without any intermediate steps. SERS technique offers additional benefits rather than other analytical techniques including high selectivity, ultrasensitive detection, uncomplicated protocols, in situ sampling, on-set capability and cost-effectiveness. As a result of the combination of developments in materials and nanotechnology science with the SERS analysis technique, this technique strengthens its use advantage day by day.

December 2023

Chemistry Department, Faculty of Art and Science, Erzincan Binali Yildirim University, 25240, Erzincan, Türkiye.

A novel phenylethanoid, ferruginoside D, together with fourteen known compounds were isolated from the Verbascum leiocarpum for the first time. Chemical structures of isolated compounds were determined by spectroscopic analysis including HR-ESI-MS and NMR spectra. The antioxidant, α-glucosidase inhibitory properties, and antiproliferative activities against multiple cell lines (A172, C6, HeLa, A2780, SW620, HT29, Beas2B, RPE, and HSF) of the isolated compounds were evaluated in vitro.

Onion contains many dietary and bioactive components including phenolics and flavonoids. Spiraeoside (quercetin-4-O-β-D-glucoside) is one of the most putative flavonoids in onion. Several antioxidant techniques were used in this investigation to assess the antioxidant capabilities of spiraeoside, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH·) scavenging, N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine radical (DMPD) scavenging, 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) radical (ABTS) scavenging activities, cupric ions (Cu) reducing and potassium ferric cyanide reduction abilities.

Since the discovery of graphene, nano-sized two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as MoS, MoSe, MoTe, NbS, NbSe, WS, WSe, TaS and TaSe, which have been classified as next-generation nanomaterials resembling graphene (G) have complementary basic properties with those of graphene in terms of their practical applications. TMDs are attracting great attention due to their attractive physical, chemical and electronic properties. Despite being overshadowed by graphene in terms of frequency of use, TMDs have been used frequently in many areas in recent years instead of carbon-based materials such as graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanodiamonds (NDs).

Magnofluorine, a secondary metabolite commonly found in various plants, has pharmacological potential; however, its antioxidant and enzyme inhibition effects have not been investigated. We investigated the antioxidant potential of Magnofluorine using bioanalytical assays with 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), ,-dimethyl--phenylenediamine dihydrochloride (DMPD), and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging abilities and K[Fe(CN)] and Cu reduction abilities. Further, we compared the effects of Magnofluorine and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), α-Tocopherol, and Trolox as positive antioxidant controls.

Coumestrol (3,9-dihydroxy-6-benzofuran [3,2-c] chromenone) as a phytoestrogen and polyphenolic compound is a member of the Coumestans family and is quite common in plants. In this study, antiglaucoma, antidiabetic, anticholinergic, and antioxidant effects of Coumestrol were evaluated and compared with standards. To determine the antioxidant activity of coumestrol, several methods-namely N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride radical (DMPD)-scavenging activity, 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) radical (ABTS)-scavenging activity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH)-scavenging activity, potassium ferric cyanide reduction ability, and cupric ion (Cu)-reducing activity-were performed.

In the presence of trifluoroacetic acid, on the basis of three-component condensation of phenylthiourea with its salicylaldehyde and methyl-3-oxobutanoate, an efficient method for the synthesis of 1-(4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-6-methyl-1-phenyl-2-thioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidin-5-yl)ethanone (I) has been worked out. These novel N-substituted tetrahydropyrimidines based on phenylthiourea showed good inhibitory action against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), α-glycosidase, and human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) isoforms I and II. K values of AChE enzyme were in the range of 0.
