Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is not defined as a classical paraneoplastic neurological syndrome, however there are growing evidences that NMOSD may be rarely associated with cancer. Older (>45 years old) male patients with longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) or patients with "area postrema" syndrome (intractable vomiting and hiccups) at onset are at higher risk for neoplasm-associated NMOSD. We report the case of 79-years old man who developed, a month after radiotherapy for prostatic adenocarcinoma, an area postrema syndrome rapidly followed by a LETM involving the whole spinal cord (from C2 to the conus).

Hypohydration may be associated with vascular diseases, poor prognosis and worse outcomes in stroke. The underlying mechanisms have not yet been completely investigated, although some studies suggested potential associations with brain perfusion and collaterals status. Despite the potentially different mechanisms promoting serum or urine biomarkers of hypohydration, few studies have investigated both markers separately.

Changes in physiological functions after spaceflight and simulated spaceflight involve several mechanisms. Microgravity is one of them and it can be partially reproduced with models, such as head down bed rest (HDBR). Yet, only a few studies have investigated in detail the complexity of neurophysiological systems and their integration to maintain homeostasis.

Liver fibrosis (LF) mortality rate is approximately 2 million per year. Irrespective of the etiology of LF, a key element in its development is the transition of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) from a quiescent phenotype to a myofibroblast-like cell with the production of fibrotic proteins. It is necessary to define optimal isolation and culturing conditions for good HSCs yield and proper phenotype preservation for studying the activation of HSCs in vitro.

Introduction: Anesthetic care in patients undergoing thoracic surgery presents specific challenges that necessitate standardized, multidisciplionary, and continuously updated guidelines for perioperative care.
Methods: A multidisciplinary expert group, the Perioperative Anesthesia in Thoracic Surgery (PACTS) group, comprising 24 members from 19 Italian centers, was established to develop recommendations for anesthesia practice in patients undergoing thoracic surgery (specifically lung resection for cancer). The project focused on preoperative patient assessment and preparation, intraoperative management (surgical and anesthesiologic care), and postoperative care and discharge.

Owing to the large inter-subject variability, early post-stroke prognosis is challenging, and objective biomarkers that can provide further prognostic information are still needed. The relation between quantitative EEG parameters in pre-thrombolysis hyper-acute phase and outcomes has still to be investigated. Hence, possible correlations between early EEG biomarkers, measured on bedside wireless EEG, and short-term/long-term functional and morphological outcomes were investigated in thrombolysis-treated strokes.

Given the lack of effective treatments for Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the development of novel therapeutic approaches is very urgent. Here, siRNAs were delivered to HCC cells by a synthetic polymer containing α,β-poly-(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide-(PHEA) derivatized with diethylene triamine (DETA) and bearing in the side chain galactose (GAL) linked via a polyethylene glycol (PEG) to obtain (PHEA-DETA-PEG-GAL, PDPG). The GAL residue allows the targeting to the asialo-glycoprotein receptor (ASGPR), overexpressed in HCC cells compared to normal hepatocytes.

Background And Aim Of The Work: Pain is defined by the International Association for the Study of Pain as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage". In this mini-review, we focused on the Mendelian disorders with chronic pain as the main characteristic or where pain perception is disrupted, and on the polymorphisms that can impart susceptibility to chronic pain.
Methods: We searched PubMed and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) databases and selected only syndromes in which pain or insensitivity to pain were among the main characteristics.

COVID-19 may increase the risk of heat-related symptoms during hot weather since vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with neurological disabilities, must continue to self-isolate, often indoors. Within the chronic neurological patient population, indoor conditions in summer months present a hazard because of impaired and/or altered thermoregulation, including poor hydration status due to both autonomic and behavioral dysfunction(s). To address this increased risk, telemedicine protocols should include an assessment of the patient's environmental parameters, and when combined with physiological data from wearable devices, identify those with neurological diseases who are at higher risk of heat illness.

LGI1 encephalitis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by cognitive symptoms and seizures, which rarely respond to common antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Rituximab (RTX) is a CD-20-depleting monoclonal antibody which has been used for the treatment of LGI1 encephalitis, however, its efficacy remains controversial. A 54-year-old woman came to our attention due to memory loss and gambling.

The tight regulation of cytoskeleton dynamics is required for a number of cellular processes, including migration, division and differentiation. YAP-TEAD respond to cell-cell interaction and to substrate mechanics and, among their downstream effects, prompt focal adhesion (FA) gene transcription, thus contributing to FA-cytoskeleton stability. This activity is key to the definition of adult cell mechanical properties and function.

Background: The worldwide lockdown in response to COVID-19 pandemics has often led to physical inactivity and social distancing. When combined, these factors may affect quality and life and increase the risk of different diseases. Therefore, assessment of physical activity levels should be encouraged to monitor and identify those at a higher risk of inactivity.

COVID-19 pandemics required a reorganisation of social spaces to prevent the spread of the virus. Due to the common presence of fever in the symptomatic patients, temperature measurement is one of the most common screening protocols. Indeed, regulations in many countries require temperature measurements before entering shops, workplaces, and public buildings.

Introduction: The risk of acquiring SARS-CoV-2 in a hospital setting and the need of reorganizing the Emergency Departments (EDs) to cope with infected patients have led to a reduction of ED attendances for non-infectious acute conditions and to a different management of chronic disorders.
Methods: We performed a retrospective study evaluating the frequency and features of ED attendances for seizures during the lockdown period (March 10th-April 30th 2020) in the University Hospital of Trieste, Italy. We studied the possible pandemic impact on the way patients with seizures sought for medical assistance by comparing the lockdown period to a matched period in 2019 and to a period of identical length preceding the lockdown (January 18th-March 9th 2020).

The microclimate of an airline cabin consists of dry, recirculated, and cool air, which is maintained at lower pressure than that found at sea level. Being exposed to this distinctive, encapsulated environment for prolonged durations, together with the short-term chair-rest immobilization that occurs during long-haul flights, can trigger distinct and detrimental reactions to the human body. There is evidence that long-haul flights promote fluid shifts to the lower extremity and induce changes in blood viscosity which may accelerate dehydration, possibly compromising an athlete's potential for success upon arrival at their destination.

Purpose: Heat sensitivity is a common contraindication in people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS), and physical fatigue is one of the most frequently reported symptoms that can affect quality of life. Increases in body temperature may exacerbate fatigue and heat-related symptoms. Decreasing body temperature via cooling devices may mitigate disease symptoms and improve physical abilities and quality of life.
