Hypokinesia triggers oxidative stress and accelerates the turnover of the glutathione system via the γ-glutamyl cycle. Our study aimed to identify the regulatory checkpoints controlling intracellular glutathione levels. We measured the intermediate substrates of the γ-glutamyl cycle in erythrocytes from 19 healthy young male volunteers before and during a 10-day experimental bed rest.

Background: Diverting ileostomy is a common procedure in rectal cancer surgery, but it is sometimes associated with a nonnegligible rate of complications. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and types of stoma-related complications for ileostomy creation after rectal cancer resection. The secondary aims were to report the indications, the technical details, and the efficacy of stoma care provided by ostomy nurses.

Scoring metrics are important to compare outcomes of different percutaneous treatments for small renal masses (RMs). The concept of trifecta (no complications, kidney function preservation, and absence of local recurrence) has been recently introduced in percutaneous thermal ablation of RM. In this context, previous studies have shown that cryoablation (CA) and microwave ablation (MWA) have similar outcomes.

Background: Myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) and type 2 myocardial infarction (MI), both presenting as non-ST-elevation MI (NSTEMI), are often grouped together due to overlapping symptoms. The aim of our study is to compare their characteristics and prognosis to distinguish between them.
Methods: Among 7815 patients with NSTEMI who underwent coronary angiography between 2005 and 2022 we identified 538 patients with diagnosis of MINOCA (n = 301; 3,9 %) and type 2 MI (n = 237; 3 %).

: A Body Shape Index (ABSI), which accounts for waist circumference relative to mass and height, shows a robust association with mortality risk. The present study evaluates the effectiveness of ABSI as a predictor of 10-year all-cause mortality in physically active, non-obese elderly individuals. : This prospective cohort study included 159 volunteers (94 women, aged 60-80 years), recruited in the frame of the "Physical Activity and Nutrition for Great Ageing" (PANGeA) Cross-border Cooperation Program Slovenia-Italy 2007-2013, and followed for 10 years.

Infectious diseases in older adults present a significant challenge to the healthcare system, marked by increased morbidity, mortality, and rising costs of care. Age-related changes (ARCs) in the immune system, including immunosenescence and inflammaging, contribute to heightened susceptibility to severe infections and reduced vaccine responsiveness. Additionally, alterations in the normal microbial flora due to aging and factors such as antibiotic therapy predispose older individuals to infections and age-related diseases.

Background: FNDs mimicking a stroke represent a growing challenge in the emergency department (ED). A comprehensive diagnostic approach involving clinical evaluation and neuroimaging is essential to differentiate stroke from mimics. The safety profile of thrombolysis justifies its use where FNDs cannot be ruled out.

Systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs) related pulmonary disease is highly prevalent, with variable clinical presentation and behavior, and thus is associated with poor outcomes and negatively impacts quality of life. Chest high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is still considered a fundamental imaging tool in the screening, diagnosis, and follow-up of pulmonary disease in patients with SARDs. However, radiation exposure, economic burden, as well as lack of point-of-care CT equipment limits its application in some clinical situation.

Purpose: Metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) became integral to managing severe obesity. Understanding surgical risks associated with MBS is crucial. Different scores, such as the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), aid in patient selection and outcome prediction.

The aim of these evidence-based guidelines is to present a consensus position from members of the Italian Unitary Society of Colon-Proctology (Società Italiana Unitaria di Colon-Proctologia, SIUCP) on the diagnosis and management of hemorrhoidal disease, with the goal of guiding physicians in the choice of the best treatment option. A panel of experts was charged by the Board of the SIUCP to develop key questions on the main topics related to the management of hemorrhoidal disease and to perform an accurate and comprehensive literature search on each topic, in order to provide evidence-based answers to the questions and to summarize them in statements. All the clinical questions were discussed by the expert panel in multiple rounds through the Delphi approach and, for each statement, a consensus among the experts was reached.

This narrative review aims to describe the current status of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in characterizing renal cystic lesion. The imaging techniques usually performed for their evaluation are ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with different criteria of application based on the individual case and the purpose of the examination. Generally, US, as a non-ionizing examination, is the first imaging modality performed and therefore the one that incidentally detects cystic lesions.

Developing a sense of internal safety and security depends mainly on others: numerous neuromodulators play a significant role in the homeostatic process, regulating the importance of proximity to a caregiver and experiencing feelings that enable us to regulate our interdependence with our conspecifics since birth. This array of neurofunctional structures have been called the SEPARATION DISTRESS system (now more commonly known as the PANIC/ GRIEF system). This emotional system is mainly involved in the production of depressive symptoms.

Podocytes, cells of the glomerular filtration barrier, play a crucial role in kidney diseases and are gaining attention as potential targets for new therapies. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) has shown promising results in repairing podocyte damage, but its efficacy via parenteral administration is limited by a short half-life. Low temperature sensitive liposomes (LTSL) are a promising tool for targeted BDNF delivery, preserving its activity after encapsulation.

Introduction: Hypertension is the main risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Notably, only about half of hypertensive patients manage to achieve the recommended blood pressure (BP) control. Main reasons for the persistence of uncontrolled BP during treatment are lack of compliance on the patients' side, and therapeutic inertia on physicians' side.

Background: Patients with obesity are at increased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications. CPAP has been used successfully to prevent and treat acute respiratory failure, but in many clinical scenarios, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy is emerging as a possible alternative. We aimed to compare HFNC and CPAP in a sequential study measuring their effects on gas exchange, lung volumes, and gas distribution within the lungs measured through electrical impedance tomography (EIT).

Introduction And Objectives: Epigenetic changes represent a mechanism connecting external stresses with long-term modifications of gene expression programs. In solid organ transplantation, ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) appears to induce epigenomic changes in the graft, although the currently available data are extremely limited. The present study aimed to characterize variations in DNA methylation and their effects on the transcriptome in liver transplantation from brain-dead donors.
