Background: Dengue has an increased worldwide epidemic potential with the global rising temperature due to climate change. Heat and rainfall are known to influence seasonal patterns of dengue transmission over the course of weeks to months. However, there is a gap in knowledge about the short-term effect of heat on dengue severity.

Occupational exposure to pollutants may cause health-damaging effects in humans. Genotoxicity assays can be used to detect the toxic effects of pollutants. In the present study, we evaluated genetic damage in three populations occupationally exposed to benzene, pyrenes, and agrochemicals and assessed the possible influence of titanium (Ti) co-exposure.

Mammography images are widely used to detect non-palpable breast lesions or nodules, aiding in cancer prevention and enabling timely intervention when necessary. To support medical analysis, computer-aided detection systems can automate the segmentation of landmark structures, which is helpful in locating abnormalities and evaluating image acquisition adequacy. This paper presents a deep learning-based framework for segmenting the nipple, the pectoral muscle, the fibroglandular tissue, and the fatty tissue in standard-view mammography images.

Studies on eye movements during reading have primarily focussed on the processing of content words (CWs), such as verbs and nouns. Those few studies that have analysed eye movements on function words (FWs), such as articles and prepositions, have reported that FWs are typically skipped more often and, when fixated, receive fewer and shorter fixations than CWs. However, those studies were often conducted in languages where FWs contain comparatively little information (e.

This study investigated the impact of social isolation in Carioca High-Conditioned Freezing (CHF) rats, an animal model of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Animals selected for high (CHF), low trait anxiety (Carioca Low-Conditioned Freezing, CLF), and control rats from randomly bred populations (CTL) were housed in groups or kept isolated in their cages for 14 consecutive days. On the fifteenth day, all animals underwent the Forced Swimming Test (FST), where the latency to immobility was assessed as a depressive-like measure.

The Arctic rapidly transforms due to global warming and increased human activities, triggering complex changes at unprecedented speeds that challenge conventional institutional responses. We analyse these changes through the lenses of social, political, and environmental boundaries and investigate their impacts on both inhabitants' livelihoods and the region's political framework. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, we highlight the complexities of understanding the interplay among global, regional, and local dynamics in an era where human and non-human aspects are entwined.

In spite of its importance, studies presenting detailed development procedures of alternate forms of verbal memory paradigms remains limited and unclear in terms of word selection criteria, while failing to consider word familiarity factors, despite its crucial role on episodic memory retrieval and encoding mechanisms. The present study aims to present the cross-cultural linguistic adaptation and development procedures of alternate forms of the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test to the Brazilian context (FCSRT) based on word familiarity. After translation and backtranslation procedures, 231 new words were gathered and underwent a step-by-step familiarity analysis.

What should judges do when faced with immoral laws? Should they apply them without exception, since "the law is the law?" Or can exceptions be made for grossly immoral laws, such as historically, Nazi law? Surveying laypeople (N = 167) and people with some legal training (N = 141) on these matters, we find a surprisingly strong, monotonic relationship between people's subjective moral evaluation of laws and their judgments that these laws should be applied in concrete cases. This tendency is most pronounced among individuals who endorse natural law (i.e.

Background: The evolution of antimicrobial resistance among critically ill patients before, during, and after the COVID-19 surge remains unclear.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed critically ill mechanically ventilated adult patients admitted to 8 Brazilian hospitals from Jan 1, 2018 to Apr 30, 2023. We stratified the patients into 3 periods: pre-surge (Jan 01, 2018-Mar 01, 2020), surge (Mar 01, 2020-Oct 01, 2021), and post-surge (after October 01, 2021).

Fetal echocardiography, a specialized ultrasound application commonly utilized for fetal heart assessment, can greatly benefit from automated segmentation of anatomical structures, aiding operators in their evaluations. We introduce a novel approach that combines various deep learning models for segmenting key anatomical structures in 2D ultrasound images of the fetal heart. Our ensemble method combines the raw predictions from the selected models, obtaining the optimal set of segmentation components that closely approximate the distribution of the fetal heart, resulting in improved segmentation outcomes.

Acoustic waves can be used for wireless telemetry as an alternative to situations where electrical or optical penetrators are unsuitable. However, the response of the ultrasonic transducer can be greatly affected by temperature variations, mechanical deformations, misalignment between transducers, and multiple layers in the propagation zone. Therefore, this work sought to quantify such influences on communication between ultrasonic transducers.

The potential negative impacts of Technology-Critical Elements (TCEs) on the environment and wildlife, despite increasingly recognized, remain largely overlooked. In this sense, this study aimed to investigate the concentrations of several TCEs, including rubidium (Rb), titanium (Ti) and various Rare Earth Elements (REEs), in different tissues of tiger sharks. Sharks incidentally caught by artisanal fleets in southern Brazil were opportunistically sampled and liver, gills, kidneys, heart, muscle, eyes, brain, skin, and teeth were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).

Purpose: Parametric regression models have been the main statistical method for identifying average treatment effects. Causal machine learning models showed promising results in estimating heterogeneous treatment effects in causal inference. Here we aimed to compare the application of causal random forest (CRF) and linear regression modelling (LRM) to estimate the effects of organisational factors on ICU efficiency.

Background: Much has been said by actors from different fields and perspectives about the manifold changes in world affairs triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, it is to be expected that there will be impacts on long-standing partnerships such as the one between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean Countries. However, few studies have demonstrated these impacts, either empirically, by uncovering their specificities or from a historical perspective, to allow for a reasonable methodological comparison of the patterns used to define the partnership and that have changed or have been affected in some way by the pandemic.

We study the critical behavior of a noisy kinetic opinion model subject to resilience to change depending on aging, defined as the number of interactions before a change of opinion state. In this model, the opinion of each agent can take three discrete values, the extreme ones ±1, and also the intermediate value 0, and it can evolve through kinetic exchange when interacting with another agent, or independently, by stochastic choice (noise). The probability of change by pairwise interactions depends on the age that the agent has remained in the same state, according to a given kernel.

The concept of uncertainty in an isotopic analysis is not uniform in the scientific community worldwide and can compromise the risk of false compliance assessment applied to carbon isotopic analyses in natural gas exploratory evaluation. In this work, we demonstrated a way to calculate one of the main sources of this uncertainty, which is underestimated in most studies focusing on gas analysis: the δC calculation itself is primarily based on the raw analytical data. The carbon isotopic composition of methane, ethane, propane, and CO was measured.
