Article Synopsis
  • This study examined how malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) affects temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and whether sleep bruxism (teeth grinding) mediates this relationship in children aged 7 to 8.
  • Data was gathered from 580 children and analyzed using path analysis, revealing that malocclusion did not directly impact sleep bruxism or TMD pain.
  • Instead, the results indicated a strong connection between probable sleep bruxism and TMD pain, suggesting that bruxism may be a more significant factor than malocclusion in causing TMD complaints.

Background: A smile is considered one of the most important soft skills in social interaction. And discolored teeth may effect this. It is known that some photosensitizer agents (PS) used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) during root canal treatment could play a significant role in tooth color change, and thus the main objective of this systematic review is to address whether performing PDT can influence tooth color change and to synthesize the most effective methods to remove PS from the root canal system.

Encephale

December 2023

Department of Health and Behavior, Catholic University of Pelotas - Universidade Católica de Pelotas, Rua Gonçalves Chaves, 373, Sala 424C, 96015-560 Pelotas, RS, Brazil; Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia Translacional em Medicina (INCT-TM), Porto Alegre, Brazil. Electronic address:

Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders in the general population. Our objective was to describe the cumulative incidence and risk factors of anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in a follow-up of young adults over a five-year period. This is a prospective cohort conducted in two waves.

BDNF Levels According to Variations in the CACNA1C Gene: Sex-Based Disparity.

Cell Mol Neurobiol

January 2023

Laboratory of Clinical Neuroscience, Post-Graduation Program in Health and Behavior, Catholic University of Pelotas, Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The CACNA1C gene is linked to psychiatric disorders through its role in regulating BDNF levels via calcium channels.
  • The study examined the impact of specific genetic polymorphisms (rs1006737 and rs4765913) on BDNF levels in 641 young adults, focusing on possible differences between sexes.
  • Results showed that these polymorphisms influenced BDNF levels differently in men and women, suggesting gender-specific biological mechanisms that could help explain the link between CACNA1C and psychiatric conditions.

Early Hum Dev

March 2021

Postgraduate Program in Health and Behavior, Catholic University of Pelotas (UCPel), Gonçalves Chaves, 373 - 411 C, 96015-560 Pelotas, RS, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between maternal-fetal attachment (MFA) and the perceived parental bonds among pregnant women in Pelotas, Brazil.
  • Findings indicate that women who experienced higher paternal overprotection reported stronger MFA, while those in their first trimester, without a partner, or lacking support from the baby's father showed lower MFA scores.
  • The research highlights the importance of the father's influence on women's emotional connections to their fetus, emphasizing that support and presence during pregnancy can enhance feelings of care and affection.

Dent Mater

February 2020

Department of Restorative Dentistry, School of Dentistry, Federal University of Pelotas, Gonçalves Chaves st. 457, Pelotas, RS, 96015-560, Brazil. Electronic address:

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different photoinitiator systems on the cell viability and physico-chemical properties of an experimental adhesive resin of a two-step self-etch adhesive system.

Methods: Eight photoinitiators and coinitiators were evaluated, camphorquinone (CQ); ethyl-dimethylamino benzoate (EDAB); diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (DPIHFP); 1,3-benzodioxole (BDO); piperonyl alcohol (AP); 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA); bisphenyl phosphinic oxide (BAPO); and diphenyl phosphinic oxide (TPO). Seven experimental adhesive resins (Bis-GMA:TEGDMA - 1:1 by wt%) were formulated by varying the initiation systems: R (control), R, R, R, R, R and R.

Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci

September 2021

Institute of Health Sciences, Department of Health and Behavior, Catholic University of Pelotas - UCPel, Rua Gonçalves Chaves 373, Sala 324, Pelotas, RS, 96010-280, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Leptin is a hormone involved in regulating energy balance and has been linked to psychiatric issues, showing potential antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects.
  • A study with 1,067 young adults explored the connection between leptin levels, the LEP gene polymorphism (rs3828942), and anxiety disorders, considering sex differences.
  • Findings revealed that while overall leptin levels and the rs3828942 genotype were not linked to anxiety disorders, the A-allele of the polymorphism was associated with a higher risk for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in women, indicating sex-dependent effects of leptin on anxiety.

Background: The parental bonding is influenced by two dimensions: care and control or protection over the child of both parents. The lack of care during childhood may make the individual more susceptible to the onset of psychiatric disorders when adult. These psychiatric disorders when present during pregnancy may have a negative impact on the health of pregnant women and children.
