Sport-specific differences in ACL injury, treatment and return to sports: Basketball.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

January 2025

Division of Neurosciences and Musculoskeletal Diseases, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL), Luxembourg, Luxembourg.

Basketball is an intense, fast-paced game that is physically, highly demanding. Certain aspects of the game, such as the quick pivoting and cutting movements, predispose the players to serious knee injuries, including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. While an ACL tear can be a devastating condition for players, multidisciplinary management of the injury can provide the players with a reasonable chance to return to play at the pre-injury level.

Background/objectives: The concept of educational systems thinking shows the rugby educational system as a network of multiple interactive and interconnected elements. However, the frameworks presented in the literature for developing sports practice through an educational vision and multisport engagement do not always have direct transferability to instructors' training courses. The study aims to evaluate the correlation between rugby instructors' methodological and didactical competencies and compare them with children's motor competence and psychological aspects.

Aims: To compare the effectiveness of a combined treatment involving manual therapy and postural exercises in wind musicians with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD).

Methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted among a sample of TMD-affected wind-instrument musician students (NCT05893251), who were assigned to an experimental group (EG) or a control group (CG). Both groups underwent an active cervical postural treatment for 4 weeks, with the experimental group (EG) additionally receiving a cervical therapy protocol.

Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the fixed plumb line for postural and scoliosis assessment in the sagittal plane: a pilot study.

PeerJ

November 2024

Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences, Section of Anatomy, Histology and Movement Science, School of Medicine, University of Catania, Catania, Italy.

Background: The plumb line (PL) is a common tool for assessing the sagittal curvatures of the spine, but its accuracy depends on the ability of the physician to use it correctly. This study aimed to present a fixed plumb line (FPL) no longer held by a physician but fixed to a support, evaluating the reliability in posture assessment, comparing it with PL in both adolescent with and without scoliosis.

Methods: The study evaluated the sagittal distances of the spine using a PL and a FPL in 80 young adults aged between 28.

Background: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias are more frequently exposed to polymedication, mainly due to the presence of comorbidities, are particularly vulnerable to drug-related problems, and present greater risk of adverse effects due to drug-drug interactions (DDIs).

Purpose: To assess the prevalence of clinically relevant interactions in dementia patients using a routine database, we describe the most frequent interactions and risk factors associated with them to facilitate specific interventions and programs to prevent and minimize them.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study that included patients with AD and other types of dementia (n = 100, 64% female) was conducted to identify potential DDI in their treatment using the Lexi-Interact/Lexicomp database.

Spitefulness has been defined as the willingness to cause some kind of harm to other people, even if this action does not bring any benefit and causes harm to herself. Given its relationship with a multitude of antisocial behaviors, interest in studying this trait has been growing and it was in 2014 when the first scale to measure it was validated: the Spitefulness Scale. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of its Spanish version.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the shaping abilities of endodontic systems using both natural teeth and 3D-printed resin replicas to provide a standardized research approach.
  • Eleven mandibular molars with specific anatomy were prepared using six rotary systems, and their shaping abilities were evaluated by analyzing volume and surface changes, particularly in the apical third of the canals.
  • Results showed that 3D replicas closely mimic natural teeth, with no significant differences in overall volume or surface area, indicating that 3D models are effective and practical for future endodontic research.

Assessing dark personality traits with self-reports may be hampered by biases such as socially desirable responding. To address this, observer reports could be an effective complement or alternative to self-reports. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the correlations of observer reports of the Dark Triad and Dark Tetrad traits with these traits' self-reports.

  • Trail runners need to carry extra equipment, food, and hydration to combat fatigue and dehydration during races, prompting a study on how added weight affects metabolic levels.
  • Thirteen experienced trail runners participated in a study where they ran on a treadmill with weighted vests of 0%, 5%, and 10% of their body weight to assess how these loads impact performance and biological markers.
  • Results showed that carrying a heavier vest significantly reduced the time runners could sustain exercise, with the 10% load leading to earlier fatigue and changes in blood pH levels.
