Intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the fixed plumb line for postural and scoliosis assessment in the sagittal plane: a pilot study.

PeerJ

November 2024

Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences, Section of Anatomy, Histology and Movement Science, School of Medicine, University of Catania, Catania, Italy.

Background: The plumb line (PL) is a common tool for assessing the sagittal curvatures of the spine, but its accuracy depends on the ability of the physician to use it correctly. This study aimed to present a fixed plumb line (FPL) no longer held by a physician but fixed to a support, evaluating the reliability in posture assessment, comparing it with PL in both adolescent with and without scoliosis.

Methods: The study evaluated the sagittal distances of the spine using a PL and a FPL in 80 young adults aged between 28.

Background: Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias are more frequently exposed to polymedication, mainly due to the presence of comorbidities, are particularly vulnerable to drug-related problems, and present greater risk of adverse effects due to drug-drug interactions (DDIs).

Purpose: To assess the prevalence of clinically relevant interactions in dementia patients using a routine database, we describe the most frequent interactions and risk factors associated with them to facilitate specific interventions and programs to prevent and minimize them.

Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study that included patients with AD and other types of dementia (n = 100, 64% female) was conducted to identify potential DDI in their treatment using the Lexi-Interact/Lexicomp database.

Age differences in the principal temporo-spatial components of EEG activity during a proactive interference task.

Biol Psychol

September 2024

Psychological Neuroscience Laboratory, CIPsi, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal; Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychobiology, University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Electronic address:

Proactive interference (PI) is the disruptive effect of no longer relevant information on current working memory (WM) processing. PI effects in EEG data have been previously found to be altered in healthy aging, although it remains unclear the extent to which such changes reflect delayed or different brain mechanisms employed to overcome PI. Hence, we had twenty-six young (18-34 years) and sixteen old (53-68 years) healthy adults complete a Recent Probes task while EEG was recorded.

Oral Appliances for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Dent Clin North Am

July 2024

School of Dentistry, 5-488 Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, University of Alberta, 11405-87 Avenue Northwest, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 1C9, Canada.

The use of mandibular repositioning devices (MRDs) in the management of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has gained extensive recognition with relevant clinical evidence of its effectiveness. MRDs are designed to advance and hold the mandible in a protrusive position to widen the upper airway and promote air circulation. This review of the MRD aims to provide an evidence-based update on the optimal design features of an MRD, an analysis of the variety of appliances available, and the current understanding of the action mechanism.

Article Synopsis
  • The objective of this study was to systematically review literature on the relationship between human microbiota and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma over the past decade, focusing on various key terms related to lymphomas and microbiota.
  • Of the 87 articles reviewed, 21 were selected, revealing that the skin microbiome, particularly a certain bacterium, may trigger inflammatory responses linked to the severity of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, with potential implications from both skin and intestinal microbiomes.
  • The findings suggest a connection between cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and both skin and gut microbiota, with a possible mechanism involving enhanced inflammatory signaling pathways, indicating that treatments targeting these pathways may benefit patients.

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease involving diverse symptoms with a variable clinical progress which can severely impact the patient's quality of life as well as their mental health. The pathophysiological model of rosacea involves an unbalanced immune system predisposed to excessive inflammation, in addition to vascular and nervous alterations, being certain cutaneous microorganisms' triggers of the symptoms onset. The gut-skin axis explains a bidirectional interaction between skin and gut microbiota in some inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, or rosacea.
