In patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) whose symptoms improve with acid-suppression therapy, on-demand treatment could constitute maintenance therapy. This study investigated the comparative efficacy and safety of on-demand tegoprazan and proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy in GERD. From six university hospitals in the Daejeon-Chungcheong region, we enrolled patients with GERD who had experienced symptomatic improvement with acid-suppressive therapy and, using a randomization table, randomly allocated these participants to two groups: to receive either tegoprazan 50 mg + esomeprazole placebo or tegoprazan placebo + esomeprazole 20 mg, respectively.

Background: Dysfunctional distal arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) with small caliber distal inflow arteries theoretically require percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) throughout the entire arterial length. However, in clinical practice, whole distal inflow arterial PTA is not frequently performed due to concerns about possible arterial rupture. Therefore, we investigated the safety and efficacy of this procedure at our center, comparing it with the standard venous PTA.

Diagnostics (Basel)

January 2023

Department of General Surgery, Incheon St. Mary's Hospital, College of Medicine, The Catholic University of Korea School of Medicine, Seoul 21431, Republic of Korea.

This study aimed to determine whether apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and morphological features on diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) can discriminate metastatic axillary lymph nodes (ALNs) from benign in patients with breast cancer. Two radiologists measured ADC, long and short diameters, long-to-short diameter ratio, and cortical thickness and assessed eccentric cortical thickening, loss of fatty hilum, irregular margin, asymmetry in shape or number, and rim sign of ALNs on DW-MRI and categorized them into benign or suspicious ALNs. Pathologic reports were used as a reference standard.

Photo-Cross-Linkable Human Albumin Colloidal Gels Facilitate In Vivo Vascular Integration for Regenerative Medicine.

ACS Omega

December 2021

Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biotechnology, KU Convergence Science and Technology Institute, Konkuk University, Seoul 05029, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Biodegradable scaffolds can help regenerate damaged tissues by creating an extracellular matrix (ECM) that encourages cell growth, but traditional hydrogel scaffolds often break down too quickly, limiting effectiveness.
  • To improve cell migration and tissue formation, researchers developed a fast method to create colloidal hydrogels with microsized voids that help guide and attract host cells.
  • These new hydrogels, made from human serum albumin, offer adjustable mechanical properties, promote better cell retention and survival, and enhance tissue regeneration when implanted.
