This part includes updated recommendations on pulmonary management and acute care issues, and topics that have emerged in the last few years such as other organ involvement in the severe forms of spinal muscular atrophy and the role of medications. The aim of the study was to establish if the decrease in gait velocity on the 6 minute walk test relates to signs of neuromuscular junction dysfunction in spinal muscular atrophy type 3 patients. 6 minute walk test and low-rate repetitive nerve stimulation test were performed in fifteen ambulant patients with spinal muscular atrophy type 3 of age between 9 and 66 years. The 6 minute walk distance ranged between 66 and 575 m.

The aim of this retrospective multicentric study was to assess developmental milestones longitudinally in type I SMA infants using the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination. Thirty-three type I SMA infants, who classically do not achieve the ability to sit unsupported, were included in the study. Our results confirmed that all patients had a score of 0 out of a scale of 4 on items assessing sitting, rolling, crawling, standing or walking.
