At the end of craniofacial growth, in anterior synostotic plagiocephaly, some aesthetical deficiencies may still be evident. This can depend on an inadequate initial correction or on altered postoperative growth or even on the combination of the 2 factors.Aesthetic alterations can result from various factors that could potentially affect the skeleton, the skin, subcutaneous, and muscular tissues.

Purpose: The main objective of this study, involving 11 patients, is to share our experience on an integrated treatment modality, namely, the use of cellular therapy simultaneously with surgical reconstruction. Published works show that the implantation of monocytes in ischemic tissue enhances healing by providing neo-angiogenesis, a key mechanism in tissue regenerative processes.

Materials And Methods: Our approach included the utilization of autologous monocytes and endothelial precursor cells in the bone graft itself to improve the success rate of the integration of the bone graft and its long-term viability/survival by promoting angiogenesis.

Objective: Despite several studies that have highlighted the harmful effects of alcohol consumption on cognitive functions it remains unclear whether certain brain areas are more sensitive than others are or whether alcohol causes widespread cognitive deficit. Moreover, the role of continued abstinence has yet to be clarified regarding the quality of recovery on the different cognitive domains. The aim of this 1-year longitudinal study was to evaluate the recovery of cognitive deficits in the medium (6 months) and long term (12 months) after the interruption of drinking.

CNS Drugs

May 2015

Department of Geriatrics, Neuroscience and Orthopedics, Institute of Psychiatry, Catholic University Medical School of Rome, Rome, Italy.

To date, a limited number of pharmacological agents exist to treat alcohol use disorders (AUDs), and there is growing interest in new therapeutic tools. In this framework, topiramate may represent a useful treatment option, although its use is not yet approved for AUDs. The main focus of this review is to discuss all the existing data supporting the use of topiramate in AUDs, with an emphasis on the most recent and relevant clinical implications.

Enhancing dermal and bone regeneration in calvarial defect surgery.

Indian J Plast Surg

January 2015

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, University of Udine, Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • To achieve optimal results in cranioplasty, choosing the right materials, like custom-made porous hydroxyapatite implants, is crucial; these implants promote good biological integration but initially have lower mechanical strength.
  • The study aimed to investigate whether the addition of growth-factor-rich platelet gel or a dermal matrix could enhance bone remodeling and soft tissue healing around hydroxyapatite implants in patients who underwent cranioplasty between 2004 and 2010.
  • Results showed that applying platelet gel improved dermal regeneration and blood supply, while CT scans confirmed effective integration of the hydroxyapatite implants over a 1-year period, indicating successful outcomes for both bone and tissue healing.

Introduction: Overactive bladder (OAB) and urinary incontinence, although not life-threatening, are very bothersome chronic health conditions. The limitations of current pharmacological treatment urge the need for novel drugs with alternative mechanisms of action. Huge efforts in this area of research led to the synthesis of several selective and potent β3-adrenoceptor agonists that gained relevance through research during the late 80s and 90s.

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a sedation protocol based on intranasal lidocaine spray and midazolam (INM) in children who are anxious and uncooperative when undergoing minor painful or diagnostic procedures, such as peripheral line insertion, venipuncture, intramuscular injection, echocardiogram, CT scan, audiometry testing and dental examination and extractions.

Patients And Design: 46 children, aged 5-50 months, received INM (0.5 mg/kg) via a mucosal atomiser device.

Extraaxial cavernous hemangiomas are rare intracranial lesions that can be located in different cranial compartments. Extension across different tissue planes such as the subcutaneous tissue, skull, orbital cavity, intracranial dura mater, and extracranial trigeminal divisions within the same patient has not been previously reported. This 32-year-old woman suffered left exophthalmos, left sixth nerve palsy, and trigeminal neuropathy.
